Shevchenko: AC Milan is still a competitive club

    191560hp2.jpg

Former Ukraine international Andriy Shevchenko is confident that AC Milan has what it takes to fight for silverware in the 2012-13 campaign.

The Dynamo Kiev attacker still keeps tabs on his old club, and believes that the Rossoneri have enough talented players left to challenge for top honours.

"I always follow Milan very closely and I am always in contact with [Ariedo] Braida, [Adriano] Galliani and my former team-mates," Shevchenko was quoted as saying by Milannews.it.

"I have no doubt regarding the current team: they are still very competitive. They decided to keep Thiago Silva, and have [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, [Kevin-Prince] Boateng, [Antonio] Nocerino and other quality players. You must be optimistic."

Shevchenko scored 127 goals for Milan in 226 Serie A appearances for the San Siro side.

The Montreal Impact sign Italian defender Alessandro Nesta

    150844hp2.jpg

The Montreal Impact have announced the signing of veteran Italian defender Alessandro Nesta on a free transfer. Per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"I'm very happy to be here," said Alessandro Nesta. "Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in MLS. Upon visiting my friend Marco (Di Vaio) to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club. I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be."

Nesta, 36, joins the Impact after 417 matches in Serie A, 101 in the Champions League and 17 in the Europa League with both AC Milan and Lazio. He's also been selected for UEFA's Team of the Year on four different occasions (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007).

"It's exciting not only for the team, but also for the club to have a player of his pedigree, a world champion in 2006 and one of the top defenders in the world," said Impact sporting director Nick De Santis. "Alessandro will bring a lot of leadership qualities through his different experiences, and will be a great mentor to our young players. To have him around the team and on the field will help the club as a whole."

The former AC Milan defender also has an impressive 78 caps for the Italian national team and won the 2006 World Cup with the team.

"It's an incredible opportunity for our club to add a defender of his talent," said Impact head coach Jesse Marsch. "We are very anxious to get him into our lineup because he will make us better on every level."

The Impact traded allocation money to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for first priority in the MLS allocation order. Nesta's contract with Montreal won't take up a designated player slot.

Silva set for new City deal

Silva set for new City deal

    silva1024_2789238.jpg

Manchester City ace David Silva is set to snub interest from Real Madrid and put pen to paper on a new deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Silva, who recently helped Spain to a third consecutive major tournament success at Euro 2012, still has two years to run on his current deal but reports suggest he will sign a new five-year contract worth £52million.

The 26-year-old playmaker, who joined City from Valencia in 2010, has declared himself "totally satisfied" at the club after playing a starring role in their Premier League winning campaign last season.

His exploits reportedly caught the eye of Primera Liga giants Real but Silva is adamant he is not thinking of a move. The Spaniard, who was the top assist scorer in the top-flight last term with 15, expects a new deal to be wrapped up sooner rather than later.

    Satisfied

He told the Daily Star: "My home is at City and I am totally satisfied there. My head is not at Real Madrid but at Manchester City.

"I'm grateful for my experience at City and I have improved as a player, in every sense, since I joined them. I didn't know if I was capable of playing like this when I left Valencia."I'm on holiday right now, but my agents are negotiating a new deal with City and I think it's likely we close it in a very short time."

Silva expects to see City recruit more big-name signings this summer, with wantaway Arsenal striker Robin van Persie having been heavily linked with a move to the Etihad. The midfield ace added: "The club are preparing offers for players to improve the squad. The project will be very ambitious."

    Toure would welcome RVP

    Robin-van-Persie-Arsenal_2788807.jpg

Kolo Toure believes Arsenal striker Robin van Persie could help Manchester City challenge for UEFA Champions League glory.

Van Persie had been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium even before Wednesday's announcement that he would not be extending his Gunners contract which has just 12 months left to run.

That speculation has been ramped up with the Holland international, who scored 30 Premier League goals last season, admitting a desire to challenge for major silverware contributed to his decision. And centre-back Toure, who played alongside Van Persie before leaving North London for City in 2009, is well aware of what the striker can bring to a team.

    Top player

"Robin is a top player. I've played with him, I know him and he's a great man," the centre-back is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News."At City we have great players and the club does what it wants in transfers.

"But for me, if Robin comes it's great because I know what he can do."You have to build your squad every year to do better; to win the Champions League is very difficult as we have seen."

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has opted to continue his career in Major League Soccer with the Montreal Impact.

Nesta, 36, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, was out of contract in Milan and will officially join the recently formed Canadian club upon receiving his international transfer certificate."I'm very happy to be here,'' Nesta told their official website. "Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in MLS.

"Upon visiting my friend Marco (Di Vaio) to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club. I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be.''Rome-born Nesta joins fellow Italians Di Vaio, Bernardo Corradi and Matteo Ferrari at the club.

He came through the youth ranks at Lazio and then played for the Eternal City club's first team for almost a decade before moving to Milan in 2002, completing a total of 417 games in the Italian top flight.

He won three Serie A titles, enjoyed Champions League success twice with the Rossoneri - in 2003 and 2007 - and was included in UEFA's Team of the Year on four occasions.

AVB kid bid sparks battle with Fergie

AVB kid bid sparks battle with Fergie

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS will walk straight into battle with Manchester United after brilliant rookie Zeki Fryers quit Old Trafford. The defender, 19, is set to join up with new Tottenham boss AVB within a week, after ducking pre-season training with United, where his contract ended in June.

Spurs only want to pay £2million — half United’s valuation — so Alex Ferguson will argue his case at a transfer tribunal.

It is another huge blow to Fergie’s dreams of creating another golden generation of United graduates after Paul Pogba and Ravel Morrison also left for Juventus and West Ham respectively.

    Spurs ready to sell Modric

    Spurs ready to sell Modric

    modricgoal20120114_576x324.jpg

Tottenham may now be finally ready to sell Luka Modric, as a leading agent has told ESPN that the club will accept anything close to £40 million for the midfielder.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made a big effort to keep Modric a year ago when Chelsea were willing to buy him at that price but, after the North Londoners missed out on the Champions League and Modric reiterated that he wanted out once more, he has been told that he can go if the fee is right.

An insider told ESPN: "The feeling is that Modric, no matter how talented, doesn't score enough goals from his position. It has been suggested that Real Madrid are after him, but I am not so sure. It sounds more like clubs are being alerted that Modric can now be bought.

"Chelsea and Manchester United wanted Modric a year ago, but again there is no certainty that either club will pay the price. However, it seems more likely that Modric will be sold if a club comes close to Spurs' asking price. The club have a new manager who wants to buy his own players and the sale of Modric can significantly help in that direction."

Reports on Friday suggest that personal terms would be not be an issue should Real Madrid decide to move for the Croatian, but that the Spanish club's valuation of Modric is someway short of what Tottenham are expecting.

A year ago, Harry Redknapp hinted that it might make sense to get a good price for Modric and reinvest in new players, but Levy stood firm on the asking price and the Croatian stayed.Spurs may now be forced to lower their valuation for Modric, and there is every chance a compromise fee might attract revised interest in the player from another Premier League club.

Modric agrees terms with Real Madrid

    191951hp2.jpg

Tottenham star Luka Modric has agreed terms with Real Madrid and could soon finalize a move to the Spanish side despite the clubs being unable to settle on a fee so far, according to Croatian website 24sata.hr.

The website claims Spurs are demanding over 40 million pounds for the 26-year-old, but Madrid is confident talks will come to a conclusion in the next few days.

Sources close to Modric have been quoted as saying, "Everything has been resolved. Luka and Real Madrid agree on everything."

The source added, "There is a little more difficulty with the position of Tottenham but everything will be solved and will be resolved quickly."

Bernabeu boss Jose Mourinho could soon be able to achieve what his former club Chelsea was unable to do last summer.

Eleven months ago, Modric was denied a move away from White Hart Lane despite heavy interest from Stamford Bridge when Harry Redknapp was Spurs manager.

Redknapp was sacked after the club fell from a strong position in third place and finished fourth, but did not qualify for the Champions League because Chelsea won the competition.

Andre Villas-Boas, who was in charge of the Blues when Roman Abramovich pursued Modric last year, will want to keep hold of his best players but the odds of being able to hold onto the much-coveted Croatian look increasingly unlikely.

Arsenal chairman Hill-Wood slams Usmanov attacks as 'utter rubbish'

    151542hp2.jpg

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has hit back at shareholder Alisher Usmanov after the Uzbek criticized the club's recent operations.

In response to star striker and club captain Robin van Persie's decision to not extend his contract with the club, Usmanov said in an open letter to the Gunners' board that the club's current business model was geared towards making personal fortunes.

But Hill-Wood, who sold his shares to majority owner Stan Kroenke, has rejected these claims as "complete and utter rubbish" and believes the 58-year-old is threatening to destabilize the club.

He told The Guardian: "It was nice to make that money, but I was never involved in Arsenal for that reason. I was involved because I have been brought up to love Arsenal and that is my only concern.

"I do not know what he [Usmanov] is trying to do really, I don't think he is right."

Hill-Wood also stressed that Arsenal cannot go head-to-head financially with the likes of Manchester City and that is why the club must take care of its money.

He continued: "We don't have the same oil wealth that [City's owner] Sheikh Mansour has. He is prepared to pay astronomical figures for players; we cannot pay that sort of money, and we can't compete."

Usmanov, however, believes that the board should pay off the stadium debt in order to ensure players like Van Persie can be retained but Hill-Wood disagrees.

"It's simple to say we should put some money in, but it doesn't make any sense," the 76-year-old said.

"We can't pay off the debt without huge penalties, and putting money in for any other reason doesn't make any sense at all.

"We give the manager as much money as we possibly can, and all we can do is continue. We have run the club sensibly, and we haven't done badly; it's not as if we have been relegated."

Neymar: I must keep adapting to tighter marking

    194220hp2.jpg

Neymar has admitted that he is finding it increasingly difficult to find time and space for himself on the field, but remains confident that he will always retain his ability to conjure something out of nothing.

The Santos starlet is just 20 but is already regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the game. For that very reason, he is drawing as much attention on the field as off it.

"We all go through moments of difficulty in life and it's the same in football," the Brazil international told CT Rei Pele.

"It's a cycle; and the ball is round. One day, fine; the next, bad. The difficulty is natural, and it helps me to grow."

Neymar is now being specifically targeted by opposition defenders and accepts that the onus is on him to continue coming up with new ways of losing his markers.

"It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to play; everyone knows my potential. I have to find a new way of evading the defenders, because it is difficult," Neymar said.

"When you're in a game, you must always try to do the same things as always, but also with something else, something impromptu."

Neymar, who has already been capped 18 times by the Selecao, has been included in his country's squad for this summer's Olympics in London.

Rio Ferdinand excited by new Manchester United signing Kagawa

    193771hp2.jpg

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has expressed his excitement at linking up with new teammate Shinji Kagawa.

The Japanese star joined United from Borussia Dortmund this summer for a fee believed to be in the region of 17 million pounds and played a major role in the German club's double-winning campaign last season.

And Ferdinand, who will be facing the 23-year-old in preseason training, has tipped the attacking midfielder to be a hit with the Old Trafford faithful.

The Englishman told MUTV: “I can't wait to see Kagawa in action. I watched him on TV last season and saw him in the cup final when Dortmund beat Bayern Munich and he looked very impressive."

“I think a lot of people will be surprised by how good he really is and hopefully he can hit the ground running.”

The 33-year-old, who was left out of England’s Euro 2012 squad, is also looking forward to returning to action in United’s preseason tour of South Africa, China and Europe.

“I love preseason. This is the longest time I've had off and I'm raring to go,” he enthused.

“Even the family at home have been trying to get me out of the door to come to training! I've been getting cold feet in the house sitting around doing nothing. It's hard work but I love it.”
