FIGC announces 12-man benches for Serie A fixtures

    109120hp2.jpg

FIGC president Maurizio Beretta has approved the proposal for a larger number of substitutes for Serie A matches, only three months after the idea was initially presented to the organization by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Serie A teams will be forced to name no fewer than 23 players on a matchday, making their benches the largest in the highest tiers of world football.

The ruling will also be valid for Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana and Primavera Championship fixtures effective immediately.

However, the decision has already been met with stiff opposition from Roma coach Zdenek Zeman, who believes an 18-man matchday squad to be sufficient.

"For me it does not change very much," he told reporters. "It's unnecessary. In my experience 18 players was sufficient."

The Serie A season is due to start on Saturday, with the opening fixture involving Fiorentina and Udinese set to be the first game to experience the changes.

'Chicharito wants to stay at Manchester United,' says his father

Javier Hernandez's father is the latest to speak out on the Manchester United striker's situation at the club following speculation that the Mexican national teamer could be leaving Old Trafford.

"What's being said is all speculation, Chicharito has a contract with Manchester United and he wants to stay," Javier Hernandez Sr. told Mexican newspaper Record.

Following the signing of Robin van Persie, the forward has been linked with Arsenal, Juventus and Chelsea, who reporedly offered up a large transfer fee in order to acquire Hernandez.

At Monday's Premier League opener against Everton, Chicharito was the only striker on United's roster who wasn't a starter or on the bench.

In two seasons with the club, Hernandez has scored 32 goals in 81 matches across all competitions.

    Llorente agent confirms English interest

    203702hp2.jpg

Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente's agent has claimed that his client has attracted attention from two clubs in England as the speculation surrounding his client's future continues.

Goal.com revealed that Juventus was confident of landing the Spain international, who recently decided that he would not be extending his current contract at San Mames, which expires in 2013.

Despite strong interest from the Italian champions, Llorente's agent has failed to end the speculation and insists his client will reveal his possible new club tomorrow.

"Tomorrow Llorente will speak about his destination," Arino Bajo told The Daily Telegraph.

"It is very, very possible he will decide to go to the Premier League. I do not know the club at the moment but there are two interested. One is in London and one is in Manchester."

Bayern still wants Javi Martinez, says Rummenigge

    203437hp2.jpg

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has insisted that Bayern Munich's interest in Javi Martinez has not been waned, despite acknowledging that certain obstacles lie in the way of a possible transfer.

The Bavarian giants have been linked with the midfielder, who represented Spain at Euro 2012, for most part of the summer, and agreed to meet the midfielder's release clause of 40 million euros with Athletic Bilbao.

However, the former striker admits there are other determining factors which are preventing a move from being engineered, but Martinez's low wage demands mean a move is still a likely outcome.

"We want to sign Javi Martinez for €40m, but there are still legal and tax problems," Rummenigge told FCB.tv. "These problems could be solved very easily if Bilbao would accommodate us with a bit of help, but they are not doing so.

"We always said that we would never pay €40m for Javi Martinez, but he refrains from high wages to make this possible."

Bayern kicks off the new Bundesliga season on Saturday against new boys Greuther Furth.

Arteta: Arsenal is good enough to carry on without Song

    166235hp2.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has insisted that the Gunners will be able to cope without Alex Song following his recent departure to Barcelona.

The Cameroon international sealed a 15 million pound move to the Catalan giants this week, ending a seven-year stay with the north London club.

And, despite speaking glowingly of his partnership with Song, the Spaniard expressed his belief that Arsenal's display in drawing 0-0 with Sunderland showed that they have the depth to overcome his exit.

"I felt really comfortable when I played with Alex last year, he was a terrific player, but if he and the club decided that the best option was for him to leave we have to accept it," Arteta told the club's official website.

"I think we are good enough to carry on without him. We are looking good. We looked really organized on Saturday, just maybe in the final third we didn't take the chances we should have done."

New signing Olivier Giroud was guilty of a glaring miss on his Premier League debut as the Gunners were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw but Arteta called for fans to be patient with the club's new faces.

"It will take a while because there have been some new players coming in and we are building a new team," the midfielder continued. "We have lost some important players too, so we will need some time. We know that our new players can make the difference as well.
"We will have to give them a chance to settle into a new place."

    Andre Santos arrested

    andresantos20111123_576x324.jpg

Andre Santos was arrested last Friday on suspicion of dangerous driving near Arsenal's training ground.

Santos, 29, must answer bail next month and could be imprisoned for a maximum of two years if the case goes to Crown Court and he is convicted.

He was apprehended by officers after they noticed a car being driven erratically by a driver who failed to stop. The incident occured the day before Arsenal's first game of the Premier League season.

It is thought Santos, who was on the bench for the Gunners' opener against Sunderland on Saturday, was behind the wheel of a powerful sports car. He was picked up by officers close to Arsenal's training ground in London Colney in Hertfordshire, just inside the M25 motorway.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 9.30am on Friday August 17, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police on the A1, near to Junction 22 of the M25.

"Officers' attention was drawn to the vehicle due to the manner of its driving. The man has been bailed to return at a date in mid-September to a North London police station."

Jorge Enriquez will undergo knee surgery, out 4-6 weeks

    jorge-enriquez-jared-borgetti-2010-5-1-20-41-0.jpg

The Chivas midfielder will go under the knife on Tuesday to repair a tear in his knee. The Olympic gold medalist played in one league game for the Guadalajara team this season.

Chivas' Jorge Enriquez will miss more than a month of action due to a tear in his right knee, according to the club.

The defensive midfielder will undergo surgery to fix the injury on Tuesday, after picking up the knock in this weekend's Liga MX match against San Luis.

Enriquez, one of Mexico's 18 gold medalists following the London 2012 Olympic tournament, did not travel to Guatemala along with the rest of the Guadalajara team to take part in its CONCACAF Champions League match against Xelaju.

Following Chivas' 1-0 win over San Luis, the team's first in the current Apertura 2012 campaign, team doctor Rafael Ortega determined surgery would be necessary to correct the injury.

After the surgery, Enriquez will receive a time frame as to when he can come back. Currently, it's expected that the midfielder will be out more than a month.

    QPR agree Carvalho deal

    QPR agree Carvalho deal

    Ricardo-Carvalho-celeb-Real-Madrid-v-Osasuna-_2501484.jpg

Sky Sports sources understand that Queens Park Rangers have agreed a deal in principle to sign Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho on a season-long loan.

The 34-year-old has fallen out of favour at Primera Liga champions Real and will be allowed to move on in search of regular football.

Carvalho was omitted from the Real squad which toured the United States this summer, sparking speculation that he could be on his way out of the club.

A return to England, where he has previously taken in a successful spell with Chelsea, was quickly mooted.

Mourinho hopes for swift Sahin loan

    josemourinhonurisahin20120808_576x324.jpg

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho believes it would best for all parties if midfielder Nuri Sahin spends this season on loan at a Premier League club.

Mourinho is thought to be keen to be keen to retain Sahin long-term but, with Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Lass Diarra and Esteban Granero all ahead of him in the pecking order, is prepared to allow the Turkey international to spend the season away from the Bernabeu.

The Madrid coach suggested that Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham were all potential options and a year at any of these clubs would help him develop as a player.

"The Premier League is a good place for players to pick up certain characteristics which he does not have," Mourinho said. "It is all the same to me though which club he goes to. I just hope that it happens soon for him, as it is best for him. Liverpool, Arsenal or Spurs, I have no preference."

Sahin, 23, was signed by Madrid for €10 million from Borussia Dortmund 12 months ago, but arrived injured and featured little last season. He was played out of position at left-back during Madrid's pre-season US tour recently, and has lost his No. 5 shirt number to Fabio Coentrao for the 2012-13 campaign.

Mourinho hinted that Kaka could still leave the Bernabeu but that nobody had shown an official interest in taking the Brazilian playmaker, whose salary demands are reported to be significant."Kaka's situation is completely different," Mourinho said. "We have no official request for Kaka; we do for Nuri."

Welbeck signs new Man Utd contract

    dannywelbeckmanchesterunitedcelebvfulham_576x324.jpg

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has put an end to speculation over his future by signing a new four-year deal to remain at Old Trafford.

Welbeck, 21, had stalled over signing a new contract at the club, with protracted talks having taken place over the past few months. The England striker has seen his chances of regular football limited by the recent arrival of Robin van Persie, but has committed to a further four years at the club - much to the delight of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Danny has been with the club since he was eight years old and has made fantastic progress in the last couple of years first out on loan and last year as a regular in the first team," Ferguson told the club's official website.

"He has become an important player at international level as well, as the maturity of his performances at the European Championships showed. This year is another important one for him. He has a bright future ahead of him."

Welbeck added: "Playing for United is all I've ever wanted to do - it's the club I've supported all my life. I can't wait for the challenge of the new season to play my part in helping the team compete for trophies.

"I'm learning all the time from the best manager in the game and I'm keen for that to continue alongside the world class players in the squad."

Leverkusen insists Schurrle is not for sale

Bayer Leverkusen has no intention of selling star attacker Andre Schurrle this summer, the club's CEO Wolfgang Holzhauser has reiterated.

Chelsea saw an offer in excess of 20 million euros for the Germany international previously turned down, with the Bundesliga side unwilling to lose a star of such importance to a European rival.

The Champions League winner is now believed to be preparing an improved offer for the 21-year-old, but Leverkusen has insisted the attacker is not for sale at any price.

"There is simply no asking price in this case as there is no alternative solution," Holzhauser told Bild. "We have already said everything there's to say on this matter. Andre is an important player for Leverkusen."

Schurrle joined Leverkusen from Mainz in the summer of 2011 and has gone on to become a key player at the BayArena and also for the German national team.

His contract with Leverkusen is due to expire in June 2016.

Terry warns Chelsea cannot afford to fall behind in title race

    182738hp2.jpg

Chelsea captain John Terry believes it is crucial his side keep on winning games to avoid losing momentum in the title race, as they did last season.

The Blues finished sixth last season, their lowest finish in the Premier League for 10 years, after suffering a poor start to the campaign under Andre Villas-Boas.

Terry is determined to put that right this season and is eyeing up taking six points from their next two games against Reading and Newcastle.

"You definitely don't want to fall behind, which is what happened last season," he told the club's official website.
