Reign in Spain? Real Madrid set to tempt Tottenham with £110m package for Gareth Bale :baffled:

Spaniards will bid £60m for Spurs' flying winger AND offer to pay him £10m-a-year to come to the Bernabeu

Tottenham+Hotspur+FC+v+Olympique+Lyonnais+-+UEFA+Europa+League+Round+of+32.jpg

Real Madrid are putting together a stunning £110million package to capture Gareth Bale.

The Spanish giants are preparing a £60m bid for Tottenham star Bale and will offer the Welshman a £10m-a-year, five-year contract.

Real know it will take huge money to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell and are also aware Bale will be offered an enormous pay rise to stay at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham are prepared to shatter their own wage structure and pay Bale up to £170,000-a-week if they qualify for the Champions League.

But Spurs will struggle to compete with the kind of money that is on offer in Spain.

Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Chelsea are also in the hunt for Bale, but it is Real who are currently leading the chase.

Bale has not ruled out staying at Tottenham and will not follow the example of his former team-mate Luka Modric by going on strike to force a move to the Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old, however, increased fears among Spurs fans that he may be interested in joining Real by turning up to watch their Champions League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford last week.

Bale has been in sensational form ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Liverpool today, scoring 11 goals in his last nine games for club and country.

Arsenal join race to sign £15m-rated 'African Neymar' Aubameyang after scouting mission

Arsenal have joined Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham in the race to sign Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a player dubbed 'the African Neymar.'
The club's scout, Gilles Grimandi, had a close look at Aubameyang in the 2-2 draw with Rennes on Friday night, in which the Gabon player scored his 16th goal of the season.

Already highly-regarded in France, Aubameyang has moved onto the radar of a number of Premier League sides, many of whom have sent over scouts to watch him.
Arsene Wenger is expected to deploy Grimandi and chief scout Steve Rowley to more Saint-Etienne matches before the end of the campaign, as Arsenal ponder a £10m move.
Newcastle came close to signing the 23-year-old in the January transfer window, only for the French club to reject their bid as they hold out for a £15m fee in the summer.

Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham: Gerrard spot on to complete Reds turnaround

    262458hp2.jpg

Liverpool beat Tottenham in a thrilling 3-2 victory at Anfield with captain Steven Gerrard netting a late penalty as the home side fought back from a Jan Vertonghen double in a pulsating Premier League encounter.

Liverpool was rewarded for its committed early attacking when Jose Enrique fed Suarez to coolly slot home on 20 minutes, but Spurs responded on the stroke of the interval with Gareth Bale crossing for Jan Vertonghen to power home a header.

The Belgian scored again early in the second half to hand his side the lead, but Kyle Walker's bizarre back pass left Hugo Lloris horribly exposed with Downing on hand to steal in to level the match. Gerrard sealed the win from the spot with nine minutes left.

Brendan Rodgers' side had the better opening with the first decent chance coming after six minutes. Philippe Coutinho put Daniel Sturridge clean through but his first touch was heavy in going around Lloris and the opportunity passed.

Spurs began to grow into the game with Mousa Dembele winning a free kick with fine dribbling after 11 minutes, and Bale's swerving effort forcing goalkeeper Brad Jones - in for the injured Pepe Reina - to shovel the ball away.

Shots were at a premium but once again Suarez proved his worth to Liverpool with a deadly finish after 20 minutes. Wonderful work from Coutinho and Enrique led to the Spaniard laying Suarez through, and the striker clinically toe-poked beneath the onrushing Lloris into the near corner to give the Reds the lead.

Bale and Suarez's form this season led to them being singled out for strong treatment throughout, with Gerrard cautioned for a full-blooded aerial challenge on the winger - but the Welshman had the last laugh on the stroke of halftime.

The following free kick resulted in a prolonged spell of Spurs possession, and the in-form forward curled in a delightful cross from the right wing that Vertonghen confidently glanced into the bottom corner at the back post.

The Belgian defender proved his goalscoring form again eight minutes after the restart with an impudent half-volley to give Spurs the lead. Bale once again won and delivered a free kick which Jamie Carragher failed to clear, and Vertonghen struck home brilliantly from 10 yards.

Four minutes later Spurs could have had a third but for the post. Bale outpaced the Liverpool back line from the halfway line and found Sigurdsson at the back post, but his shot deflected off of Glen Johnson onto the woodwork.

That missed proved costly as Walker inexplicably played a high back pass from the right wing which curled away from Lloris, who raced from his line but couldn't control the ball as Downing nipped in to slot between the legs of Vertonghen with 25 minutes to go.

Both sides searched for a winner but Spurs' tiredness told as Defoe redirected the ball into Suarez's path in the box, causing Assou-Ekotto to bundle Suarez over and allow Gerrard to send Lloris the wrong way for all three points.

Newcastle 2-1 Stoke City: Cisse strikes late to secure Magpies victory

    262441hp2.jpg

Newcastle moved nine points clear of the relegation zone after a late strike from Papiss Cisse earned the club a 2-1 win over Stoke.

Jonathan Walters put the Stoke ahead from the penalty spot, but that effort was quickly cancelled out by a spectacular free kick from Yohan Cabaye before Cisse clinched the points with a cool finish from close range.

Newcastle named the same team that lost to Swansea last weekend, with Davide Santon, Steven Taylor, Mathieu Debuchy, Cheick Tiote, Yoan Gouffran, Jonas Gutierrez and Cisse all restored to the starting lineup after missing the Europa League clash against Anzhi Makhachkala in midweek.

Stoke meanwhile made just one alteration to the side that lost to West Ham, with Geoff Cameron coming in for Michael Kightly.

After a quiet start, it was Newcastle which began to take control of proceedings, forcing the play with some neat high-tempo passing. Chances were few and far between, however, with Cabaye's long-range effort the best opportunity of the opening stages.

Although it was the home team that carried the greater threat, Stoke felt it should have been handed a chance to take the lead when the team was denied a penalty after Santon looked to have brought down Ryan Shotton just inside the area.

The Magpies were undeterred by that scare, and continued to dictate matters. Asmir Begovic was called into action to make a comfortable stop from Santon's low drive before Gouffran fired over following an excellent long ball from Cabaye.

France international Cabaye was at the heart of most Newcastle attacks, and it was he who went close again with a shot from the edge of the area which was deflected wide of the post.

Despite Newcastle's endeavor, the home team was unable to break the deadlock before the interval. The halftime stalemate owed much to Stoke's defensive resilience, and the visiting side had to be on its guard again as Moussa Sissoko broke through only to hit his shot wide under considerable duress from Begovic.

Alan Pardew's men pushed forward with increasing intent as the half dragged on, but it was Stoke which finally broke the deadlock after Tiote hacked down Walters.

Referee Andre Marriner was left with no option other than to point to the spot and the Irish international duly stepped up and dispatched the resulting spot kick with consummate ease.

It was an advantage that lasted a matter of minutes however, as Newcastle quickly leveled with a superb curling free kick from Cabaye after Begovic had felled Gouffran just outside the penalty area.

The goal gave Newcastle renewed energy, but in spite of the mounting pressure it looked as if the Magpies would be forced to settle for a point.

Cisse, though, would have the final say, latching on to an excellent through ball from Marveaux before lashing past Begovic to push Pardew's side three points closer to survival.

Juventus 1-0 Catania: Late Giaccherini strike moves hosts nine points clear

    262376hp2.jpg

Emanuele Giaccherini's stoppage-time winner sent Juventus nine points clear at the top of the Serie A table after the goal salvaged a 1-0 result and rescued an otherwise disappointing performance against Catania from the reigning Italian champion.

The substitute winger, who was booked for diving in the last minute of normal time, redeemed himself when he slotted home from close range after Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar flapped at Paul Pogba's searching cross. The goal, coupled with Napoli's surprise defeat to Chievo, mean Antonio Conte's side is now the clear favorite for another Serie A title with 10 games remaining in the season.

The league leaders looked to impose themselves on the game early, but only had an Andrea Barzagli long range effort to show for their endeavors, with the defender's strike flying over the bar.

Mirko Vucinic was rested for the Champions League win over Celtic in midweek, and the break seemed to have done him good as he tested Andujar for the first time, but the goalkeeper turned his shot from distance behind for a corner.

The visitors had decided to try and counter the attacking threat of Conte's side, but they almost took the lead themselves when Alejandro Gomez tried his luck from distance. Gianluigi Buffon was equal to it, though, despite initially spilling his effort.

Long-range efforts then became a theme of the match, with Francesco Lodi and Leonardo Bonucci both firing wide before the home side twice went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock.

Claudio Marchisio curled a shot wide after good interplay with Vucinic, before the Montenegro striker hit the post after capitalizing on a breakdown in communication in the Catania defense.

The remainder of the half passed with little incident on the field, though Catania coach Rolando Maran was sent to the stands after arguing with the officials.

The second half continued where the first had left off, with Juventus pressing at every opportunity, and Andujar had to be at his best to deny both Bonucci and Paul Pogba in quick succession. Pogba slowly made his way into the match after a quiet start, and he went close again as he volleyed an effort wide from 25 yards.

Vucinic was still the biggest threat for Conte's side, but his finishing wasn't up to its usual standard, highlighted when he could only shoot wide from close range under pressure from the impressive Andujar.

Juventus rang the changes in search of a breakthrough, and one of the substitutes, Alessandro Matri, went close with a header as the game entered its final 10 minutes.

Giaccherini then took center to emerge as the hero, and Fabio Quagriella almost doubled the lead, but Andujar parried well from the Italy striker to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Millwall 0-0 Blackburn: Replay needed despite clear-cut chances

    262390hp2.jpg

Millwall and Blackburn played out a goalless draw at the New Den despite a number of chances for both sides, taking their FA Cup quarterfinal tie into a replay at Ewood Park.

With a place at Wembley Stadium up for grabs, both sides made tentative starts to the game. Much of the first quarter of the match was punctuated by fouls and free kicks as both sides did more to disrupt the other's attack instead of building their own.

Backed by a home crowd, it was Kenny Jackett's Millwall side that eventually took the intiative and started to apply some pressure on Blackburn. The Lions had the ball in the net just before the half hour mark, but Rob Hulse's goal was ruled out because of a foul.

The hosts had the best chance of the half in the 37th minute, when Jack Smith burst forward down the left before curling a right-footed cross in towards the post. Andy Keogh, though, could only head on to the inside of the post.

Blackburn boss Michael Appleton must have had some inspiring words for the visiting side at halftime, because Rovers came out a reinvigorated side in the second half.

They should have taken the lead moments after the break through Jordan Rhodes, but the normally clinical striker flashed his shot from a tight angle over the bar from a few yards out.

That scare sprung the home side back into life, and the Millwall twice went close to scoring in response.

Danny Shittu almost lifted the roof off the stadium with a rasping effort from all of 40 yards, but his audacious effort was tipped over by Blackburn goalkeeper Jake Kean.

Hulse then had a glorious chance to give the Lions the the lead but somehow managed to turn Keogh's cross over the bar with an open goal gaping at his mercy.

Joshua King struck the woodwork for Rovers after a goal-mouth scramble in the 80th minute but it was Millwall who applied all the late pressure with the help of the raucous home support. Despite the hosts' best efforts, they were unable to find the breakthrough, taking the tie to a replay at Ewood Park with the winner advancing to a Wembley Stadium semifinal.

Milan's Pazzini ruled out of Barcelona clash

    261954hp2.jpg

The striker was forced off with an ankle injury after scoring in Milan's win over Genoa, and has been omitted from Massimiliano Allegri's 22-man squad for the trip to Camp Nou.

Giampaolo Pazzini has been ruled out of AC Milan's Champions League clash with Barcelona on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old forward was forced off with a suspected ankle injury after scoring in his side's 2-0 win over Genoa, with Mario Balotelli replacing him after just 22 minutes.

The striker is set for a scan to determine the full extent of the damage, but he will take no part in next week's last 16 second-leg clash with the Blaugrana, having been omitted from Massimiliano Allegri's 22-man squad for the trip to Spain.

The news will come as a bitter blow to the Italian giants, with Balotelli ineligible to feature in the match as a result of him being cup-tied to Manchester City. Stephan El Shaarawy and M'Baye Niang are the only recognized first-team forwards available for selection for the Italian side, which carries a 2-0 aggregate edge over the Catalan giant into the final leg.

Pazzini has enjoyed an excellent run of form in recent weeks after a difficult start to his Milan career following his move from Inter, having scored six times in six victories for the Rossoneri in 2013.

Moutinho: Porto wants to win the Champions League

    256790hp2.jpg

The midfielder is determined to advance as far as possible in the competition, and took time to praise the work of coach Vitor Pereira.

Joao Moutinho insists Porto wants to win the Champions League but that the club is currently looking no further than the second leg of the last-16 clash with Malaga.

The midfielder's goal in the first meeting between the two sides at the Estadio do Dragao gives the Portuguese club a 1-0 lead going into the game, and he admitted the team is determined to go as far as possible in this season's competition.

"We must take it match by match," Moutinho told Uefa.com. "As I said, we all have the ambition to win the Champions League. Anyone who is at this stage has a desire to go as far as possible, but we're not thinking further than the game against Malaga.

"That would be a mistake, because they're extremely difficult to beat and will be doing everything they can to go through."

Porto boss Vitor Pereira has been widely praised after guiding the club to the league title last season and to within touching distance of the Champions League quarterfinals, and Moutinho believes the 44-year-old has been a complete success since his appointment in 2011.

"Everything he has done has been right," the midfielder said. "He has been passing on all his knowledge. He's someone we already knew, as the assistant of Andre Villas-Boas, so him knowing us, us knowing him, allowed us to immediately become champions in our first year together.

"Our and his ambition grows every day and this season we want more. We want to become champions again and we want to go as far as possible in the Champions League."

Don't bring Maradona to Montpellier, warns Di Meco

    258755hp2.jpg

The former France defender has urged the Ligue 1 outfit's chairman, Louis Nicollin, not even to consider the idea of bringing the iconic Argentine to the south of France.

Former Olympique de Marseille defender Eric Di Meco has cast doubt over Diego Maradona's ability as a coach, and suggested that Montpellier would be destabilized by his arrival.

Club chairman Louis Nicollin has recently expressed his intention to sound out the 52-year-old as a replacement for current boss Rene Girard, whose contract expires at the end of the season; however, Di Meco, writing in a blog for RMC Sport, believes this would be an extremely ill-judged move.

"This is the worst thing that could happen," Di Meco said of the potential appointment. "There is still doubt about Maradona's qualities as a coach. He has no achievements. I feel that he is capable of derailing a club which has worked well for years within six months.

"[Montpellier] is a healthy club, with a trainer, a structure that works well - it is a people's club. If he [Nicollin] wants to sustain the club, do not bring in Maradona.

"It must be Jean Fernandez, Antoine Kombouare, Luis Fernandez... whoever. Someone who has a vision of the club in the long term.

"This is why I do not even believe in this story."

Maradona is currently under contract with the Dubai Sport Council, working as a global ambassador for the institution.

Wenger: We have to believe we can beat Bayern Munich

    256662hp2.jpg

Arsenal was beaten by the Bundesliga leader 3-1 at the Emirates in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, but the Gunners' boss insists his side still has a chance.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists his players must believe they can beat Bayern Munich in their upcoming Champions League round of 16 second-leg clash if they are to stand any chance of overturning the 3-1 loss at the Emirates.

The Gunners were blown away by the Bundesliga leader in London with goals from Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and Mario Mandzukic giving the Germans a commanding advantage for the return leg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

Despite the unenviable task facing Wenger's side, he wants his team to pull together and make the "impossible possible" in order to progress to the quarterfinals of the illustrious competition.

"There have been a few wins by Arsenal in the Champions League that we are all very proud of. We just have to convince ourselves that we can do it in Munich as well," Wenger told the Arsenal Player. "Yes, the chance is small, but the chance makes the impossible possible. That would be a great credit for our team if we do it. We have to try to achieve it. Our mentality is to go there, not resigned, but ambitious and provoke things, not go there and think 'we will not qualify anyway.' No, not at all.

"We have to go there and give ourselves a chance to qualify with everybody believing we can do it. We have to behave on the football pitch like a team who wants to do it. That will be the task in the preparation."

While Bayern will provide a fearsome offensive threat with the likes of Mandzukic and Muller, Wenger hinted that he will set out his team to get goals from the opening whistle.

"How will we go into the game tactically? I haven't decided yet," Wenger said. "It will be with an ambitious plan, that is for sure. We have to try to put Bayern on the back foot; subconsciously anyway, they think they are through and we have to subconsciously think that we can do it. The only way to do it is to have a very positive attitude from the start."
