In north america, people buy cars for 10 years or 200,000 km. After that it is value is small; they usually buy new car after 10 years. So reliability is not very big concern. Fuel economy is not very big concern as fuel price is low compared to the income.

In 1930-1940, people think about reliability and fuel economy. Now people want more. It is like smartphone. Today people do not buy a phone just to make a call like 1930's. Today people expect dynamic fun driving, quality interior, technology in a car as we are in 20th century.

For example old Toyota corolla is a very boring car with poor technology. It is good if you just want to drive form A to B. Latest 2014 edition is fine; otherwise they will loose the market.

Fortunately, some american cars as well as Hyundai gradually improve in all aspects (fuel economy, reliability, dynamic driving,technology) in the last few years so that there is a good competition. They offer more but with lower price; good for consumer.
