Courtois to sign five-year Chelsea deal

    446525_heroa.jpg

Thibaut Courtois is set to sign a new Chelsea contract after his status as the club's No.1 was confirmed, Goal can reveal.

An improved five-year contract that will triple the Belgian's wages to €110,000-a-week has been on the table since Jose Mourinho decided earlier this summer to recall the goalkeeper to his parent club.

Courtois held back from putting pen to paper while he waited to see if he would get the nod ahead of Petr Cech to start the new campaign in goal.

Mourinho's team selection for the 3-1 win over Burnley on Monday night demonstrated his faith in the 22-year-old and he is now set to sign an extension which runs until 2019.

Courtois has two years remaining on his current €37,000-a-week contract and the new package will bring him in line with the second tier of earners at Stamford Bridge alongside the likes of Ramires, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic.

As revealed last week, Cech will be encouraged to find a new club in the final fortnight of the transfer window following a decade as Chelsea's undisputed No.1.

Real Madrid and wealthy French duo Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco are closely monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation and formal bids could now be forthcoming following confirmation of Cech’s downgraded status.

Mourinho claimed on Monday that he wants to keep Cech but the west Londoners are believed to be ready to cash in on the keeper, who has two years remaining on his current contract, if they receive an offer that matches their €12 million valuation.

Chelsea already have an experienced understudy in place should he leave. Mark Schwarzer, Cech’s understudy last season, signed a one-year extension in July.

Cech, whose agent confirmed PSG and Monaco made an informal enquiry for his services last month, has admitted he will not be happy if he is left on the bench.

The Cezch has established himself as one of the world's outstanding keepers during his decade at Stamford Bridge.

Since joining Chelsea from Rennes for in 2004, he has made 479 appearances for the club and won the Champions League, the Europa League, three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups.

    Pekerman signs new Colombia deal

    446547_heroa.jpg

Jose Pekerman has signed a new contract which sees him remain as Colombia manager, the nation's football federation (FCF) has revealed.

Colombia have been anxious to tie the coach to a new deal after he guided them to the World Cup quarter-finals this year.

However, after the 64-year-old's previous deal had expired after the summer tournament, talks on fresh terms were put on hold, with the FCF revealing Pekerman had "personal commitments" to attend to.

And after lengthy negotiations it was today announced that Pekerman will remain in charge for at least four more years.

"After several weeks of work, with a view to the new project for the period 2014-2018, the Colombian Football Federation led by its president Luis Bedoya Giraldo, is proud to announce the continuation of coach Jose Pekerman," a statement on the FCF website read.

Pekerman took his side to the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup, where they were narrowly beaten by hosts Brazil.

His new contract will see him manage the side in two Copa America campaigns and the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Dunga: Neymar can inspire new-age Brazil

    434161_heroa.jpg

Brazil coach Dunga has called on the younger members of his squad to take inspiration from star forward Neymar.

A number of new faces were included in Dunga’s first squad since returning for his second stint in charge of the national team on Tuesday. Only 10 of the 23 that made up Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup roster will make the journey to the United States to face Colombia and Ecuador in September.

And the 1994 World Cup winning captain has called on the younger members of his squad to look to the Barcelona man as a reference for how they should conduct themselves as part of a new-look Selecao.

"Neymar is a reference to Brazilian football and to the rest of the world," said Dunga as he announced his squad in Sao Paulo.

"He has exceptional quality and we have to enjoy that and make him not only a reference for our team, but to all the young players coming through the ranks right now.

"They need to have that happiness of the Brazilian players, that youthfulness, but they also need to be inspired by the responsibility with which Neymar deals with everything."

Dunga went on to express his belief that the 22-year-old has already benefited from his 2013 transfer to Barcelona, insisting the move to Europe has seen the former Santos star improve both and off the field.

"He has improved a lot [in the last few years]," Dunga continued. "He has a taste for goals now."

"He's much more efficient, always aiming for the goal with every touch on the ball.

"He's stronger as well, both emotionally and physically. Technically he has improved a lot.

"He's more mature as well. We all saw the interview in which he said he needs to be better for the next world Cup, more prepared. I think that shows that he wants to do bigger things in football."

Dortmund hit back at Rummenigge and Beckenbauer over Reus

    446484_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has hit out at Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and club legend Franz Beckenbauer for comments about Marco Reus.

Rummenigge has strongly insisted that Bayern could swoop in for the Dortmund winger if, as reported, his release clause drops to €25 million next summer.

Beckenbauer, meanwhile has said that if the 25-year-old doesn't join Bayern next summer, he will end up at a team such as Manchester United or Real Madrid, adding Dortmund "won't be able to hold onto him".

However, Watzke has hit back at the pair, saying it is "annoying" that the Bavarian side seem to be making their interest in the attacker public.

"It's a nice party game that everyone talks about it," he told Bild. "It's annoying! But gradually everyone will have something to say about it."

Dortmund kick off the new Bundesliga season with a home match against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, a day after Bayern start the campaign against Wolfsburg.

Barcelona can win it all this year - Iniesta

    412495_heroa.jpg

Andres Iniesta is optimistic about the coming season and believes Barcelona can win every competition they enter this year.

The Catalans have made numerous personnel changes over the summer following the appointment of Luis Enrique as coach, with Luis Suarez, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Jeremy Mathieu and Ivan Rakitic all signing this summer.

Iniesta is positive that the changes will help his side recover from a campaign without silverware and challenge rivals Real Madrid and reigning league champions Atletico.

"With the new players who have come in, I think we have a great squad to compete for all titles," he told reporters.

"We had a major power shift last year. There is a great deal of hope and desire. We are coming from a bad and difficult year and we want people to feel happy with the team again.

"The team must try to grow and improve month by month, but at this club people want things to be immediate. There is not much patience at a club like this.

The 30-year-old believes Suarez will fit well into the team and is excited by the prospect seeing him team up with Neymar and Lionel Messi up front. However, he insists the whole team must be strong in order for them to be successful.

"It is never easy when you come from another club, but I think he will find a very healthy dressing room and I think he will adapt fine, because his talent is above everything else.

"Having those guys up front, as well as the likes of Pedro and Rafinha is a guarantee of goals. But what we need to find is a gear that works so that we ensure that we do well throughout all our games.

"In 90 minutes, a lot can happen, we have to be very good in all areas to grow and win."

Iniesta also spoke of his delight at being named the club's vice-captain.

"We all have an important role, but being vice-captain is something very special. I am proud and I thank my colleagues who voted for me and respected and believed in me."

Suarez was our first choice - Zubizarreta

    446474_heroa.jpg

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta says Luis Suarez was their "first choice" signing this summer and believes he will settle in well at the club.

After making the €80 million switch from Liverpool this summer, Suarez was unveiled as a Barca player on Tuesday and played his first game for the club in a friendly against Leon on Monday.

And Zubizarreta heaped praise upon the Uruguayan as he was presented to journalists, insisting he can cope with the expectations of the club and was their main target after Alexis Sanchez seemed certain to leave.

"He can play from both sides of the attack and is used to the high demands and pressures," he said.

"[He was] the first choice. So we set out to see what his situation was."

Midfielder Alex Song has been linked to a move away from the Catalan side after being deemed surplus to requirements and Zubizarreta says he is working on a transfer at the moment.

"We will see if we can find a way out in the remaining days of the market."

The 52-year-old also responded to claims from Claudio Bravo that he feels more like a signing of Luis Enrique than anyone else, saying: "The signings are not those of Luis Enrique but those of Barca. All of the signings have my okay, and I take responsibility for those who do well and those who don't."

    Martinez rubbishes Barkley injury reports

    405803_heroa.jpg

Everton coach Roberto Martinez has rubbished reports that midfielder Ross Barkley will miss five months with a knee injury sustained in training on Friday.

Martinez's insistences are at odds with previous comments, in which he claimed that the England international could be "out for a long, long time" and that he could be sidelined for "between seven weeks and four and five months".
But while the Everton boss does not feel Barkley will be out for that long, he admits he is unsure about the situation with the player's knee.

"His knee has reacted really well to treatment," Martinez told the club's official website.

"I don't know where the figure of five months came from but obviously the extent of the injury is a little unsure at the moment because we don't know how the next two weeks are going to develop.

"It's a medial ligament injury and we know that Ross, in terms of the power and the strength that he has in his body, he could easily react to treatment a lot better than other players.

"The length that Ross will be out is a little uncertain at the moment and it could be anything between the eight weeks that we mentioned or a little further.

"Until the end of the week, or probably the next 10 days, we won't know how the knee is progressing and how quickly Ross can be back."Martinez added that further updates on Barkley's condition could be expected in the coming days.Better news surrounds the fitness of Seamus Coleman, who is now ready to start games after overcoming a hamstring issue, while Martinez also revealed that Darron Gibson [knee] is progressing well.

"Seamus was fully fit from a medical point of view on Saturday [in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City] and that was a real boost," the Spaniard added."He has been working really well, and he was desperate to be part of the squad on Saturday.

"I think now it's fair to say that he's considered fully fit and ready to join the group and help the team in any game."Darron is working really well and is building some better fitness levels. We need to make sure after a long spell on the sidelines that all the work we are doing is allowing him to be fully fit.

"It's going to be a very, very busy period in September and everything is working towards that month where Darron can be fully fit and he can have a really good period on the pitch, so it's not a problem at all with Darron."

    Official: Valencia loan Zuculini

    445552_heroa.jpg

Valencia have confirmed the signing of Bruno Zuculini on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City.

Zuculini officially signed for City from Racing Club earlier this month and featured heavily in the club's pre-season tour of the US, scoring in a 4-1 win over Sporting Kansas City.

But with Yaya Toure, Fernando, Fernandinho, James Milner and fellow summer arrival Frank Lampard ahead of him in the pecking order, the 21-year-old will spend the campaign at Estadio Mestalla.

At his unveiling as a City player, Zuculini told the club's official website: "I’m very excited about the future. "I am looking forward to the experiences which this move will bring and to improving myself as a player.

"I’m also very proud to be the fourth Argentine to sign for City. The club is very popular in Argentina because of Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis."Zuculini made his debut for Racing in February 2010 at just 17 years of age and has represented Argentina at Under-20 level on eight occasions.

Alexis is great but Ramsey is Arsenal's best - Bilic

    446493_heroa.jpg

Aaron Ramsey is more important to Arsenal than Alexis Sanchez and is a "nine out of ten" in every attribute, according to Besiktas coach Slaven Bilic.

The Turkish outfit host the Gunners on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champions League playoff, hoping to gain an advantage in their quest to reach the group stage, but Bilic highlighted the threat posed by the likes of Ramsey.

He told reporters: "Arsenal signed Alexis Sanchez and he's a great player but I believe Ramsey is the best guy they have.

"Almost all their team are made of high-level players. He's not the fastest, he's not as clever as Scholes or a fighter like Roy Keane but he's got all the attributes and out of ten he would get nine for each."

Though Bilic is wary of Arsene Wenger's side, he remains positive that the Super Lig side can qualify ahead of the north Londoners.

Bilic added: "Arsenal was the last team we wanted in the draw. Wenger's Arsenal always play fast and alive, but just because they're better than us we won't give in.

"We have 15 million fans and they believe we can qualify and so do I. We have as much chance to qualify as Arsenal does, It won't be a surprise if we beat them.

"I love England and their football mentality. I would love to work in England in the future. But right now I'm here. Istanbul is a great city and fits me too. I love it here.

"Turkish fans won't get through to Arsenal. They're scary and everything but Arsenal are experienced. Fan power didn't work when Fenerbahce fans tried last year - they beat them 3-0 anyway."

    Benfica sign Julio Cesar

    446606_heroa.jpg

Benfica have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Julio Cesar on a free transfer after the remaining two years of his contract with QPR were cancelled by mutual consent.

The former Brazil international has signed a two-year deal at the Estadio da Luz and looks set to become the club's first choice keeper following the departure of Jan Oblak to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Cesar joined QPR in the summer of 2012 but spent the second half of last season on-loan at MLS club Toronto FC, before playing for Brazil at the World Cup.

However, he was deemed surplus to requirements at Loftus Road this term, where Robert Green is the current No.1, with the club sanctioning his exit on Tuesday.

Cesar made 27 starts in all competitions for The R's, with Benfica becoming the fourth permanent side he has played for following previous spells with Flamengo and Inter prior to his move to England.
