IN a first-class career spanning more than a decade and counting, Sri Lankan Sohan Boralessa has played alongside household international names such as Kumar Sangakkara, Lasith Malinga, Dinesh Chandimal and Upul Tharanga.
Now he’s putting Top End batsmen in a spin during his first season at Darwin Eagles, leading the premier grade wicket-taking tally with eight scalps at 10.88.
Bouncy, turning pitches and a great club atmosphere has helped the star spinner adjust to life in the Territory and start the 2015 Darwin and Districts season with a bang.
“(Eagles vice-president) Simon Dring and (coach) Joel Boucher have made me feel at home since moving to Darwin,” Boralessa said.
“It’s a great environment here and Kahlin Oval is a great ground.
“There’s a lot of bounce in the wickets here which I enjoy a lot, back home in Sri Lanka the wickets are quite slow and low.
“Here I seem to get a lot more purchase and bounce, which helps with getting more batsmen out.
“But I wouldn’t have taken nearly as many wickets without the other 10 blokes out in the field, taking opportunities.”
Boralessa has an impressive cricket CV including 72 first-class, 51 list-A appearances and 10 Twenty20 appearances, taking 357 wickets across the three formats since making his debut for Columbo Cricket Club in December, 2004.
A holder of three national records in his country of origin, including best bowling in an underage innings (10-30 in 2004), best first-class figures (9-47 in 2009) and most economical bowling in a one-dayer (3-7 off 10 overs in 2011), the left-arm orthodox spinner has represented Sri Lanka A on multiple occasions.
