Start with collections of short stories... There are many on the web for free.

There's The Sherlock Holmes collection by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

A couple of very readable short story collections by Geoffrey Archer - easy to understand, simple English and very interesting.
eg: A Quiver Full of Arrows, A Twist in the Tale, Twelve Red Herrings

Hercule Poirot -Short Stories - by Agatha Christie - similar to Sherlock Holmes. (Agatha's detective is Hercule Poirot)
I think it was called "The Labours of Hercules" but later on there's another collection of 50 short stories

The popular textbook in many US/UK schools "To Kill a Mockingbird" - Harper Lee

Even the Daily English paper - read.. its reading anything that matters. Use the internet or a Dictionary to find the meanings of the words that you do not know and remember these. As you go on reading your vocabulary will build up.

There are some sites which gives you the transcript and the narrative...
