This is not true, airbags will deploy based on the side of impact, it has nothing to do with whether or not you wear seatbelts or whether someone is sitting in that seat. Anyway, most people think it's cool not to wear seatbelts, though I don't think in this kind of damage even a seatbelt would have done much.
Will the airbag come out when I'm not wearing the safety belt?
my brother had a car accident last week(the car capsized), the airbag didn't protect him; it didn't come out, people say because he wasn't wearing the safety belt but I think that it has nothing to do with not wearing the safety belt.... I guess it's because we didn't update the airbag thingy you know you have to do something every year or something like updating(renew)your car, thank god my brother isn't deeply injured but I don't want that to repeat, so please say whatever you know about the airbag

the airbag deployment system is fully independent of the seatbelt. The airbags will only deploy if the sensors in the front of the car (also in the sides of newer cars) feel a extremely quick reduction in speed, such as hitting another vehicle or building.
