June 13, Colombo: A section of the Sri Lanka Postal Department workers have launched an island wide strike from midnight Sunday and the operations of many post offices are expected to be paralyzed as a result of the trade union action.

The trade union action is launched based on 14 demands including resolving salary anomalies but the main demand, according to the Co-convener of the Joint Postal Trade Union Front Chinthaka Bandara, is for the implementation of a proper procedure for recruitments to the service.

Chinthaka Bandara says the strike was launched with the aim of finding a solution to the main issue and it is successfully proceeding at the Central Mail Exchange and at all post offices in the island. The postal workers say they are refraining from overtime work.

Post Master General Rohana Abeyratne said that plans are afoot to solve the issues of postal workers within the next two days. However, he warned that if suitable action was not taken to sort out this issue within one week the union is prepared to stage a work stoppage.
