South Africa being expelled from international cricket due to apartheid at that time. No ICC members allowed to go and play there officially.

We, Sri Lanka, gained ICC full membership around the same time, after few unsuccessful attempts. And this idiot (he was our ultimate hero at that time) became the captain of first test team.

After very short period of time, Warnapura, and more than half the national team abandon the sri lankan team and play in SA for money. This man, and all the other players who participate in that tour being banned for taking any part in sri lanka cricket for life.

Australia, England, even West Indies sides travelled SA during Apartheid. All other countries gave them at most 3 year ban. If he is completing his due karma for that...I don't know how Mafia Thialnga and others in SLC could compensate..?

The full story was written sometimes back in Divayina paper by Tony Opatha. Accordingly the main rebels were not Mr. Bandula but two other key players who abandoned rebel group after Bandula joined as they were eying for Captancy. At that time after playing inaugural test against SL, Key players of UK also went SA (eg Graham Gooch, etc) they were banned only for three years whereas Sri Lanka banned for 25 years destroying their entire careers. There were very good players such as Hemantha, Devapriya, Nirmal Hettiarchi, Anura Ranasinghe, Lalith Kaluperuma, etc. Our cricket players were not payed like today so 2.5 million was a big amount. Warnapura having achieved highest and (since UK imposed 3 years) would have thought it best to join rebel group. He was a good person according to people who had played with him . His father was a Doctor who worked in government hospital. I do not blame him for going to SA at that time . We were doing lot of trade with SA at that time though commonwealth decided to ban sports with SA, due to apartheid regime of Bortha. It is wrong to blame Mr Bandula for the rebel tour and in any event I wish him speedy recovery. These are people who got Test status with minimum facilities at that time.

They (most of them) were in the end of their careers by that time. and there were a few then young ones, Hemantha someone who coached SL womens later were few of them. They didnt have many matches and they took the decision. Even I had doubts but this was revealed in an interview with Hemantha Devapriya. So no damage done. It's like SL players who did play in the Indian Cricket League in 2007/2008. They were in the end of their chances, but they took when another came in.
