"When the mind was thus concentrated, purified, bright, unblemished, rid of defilement, pliant, malleable, steady, & attained to imperturbability, I directed it to the knowledge of recollecting my past lives. I recollected my manifold past lives, i.e., one birth, two... five, ten... fifty, a hundred, a thousand, a hundred thousand, many eons of cosmic contraction, many eons of cosmic expansion, many eons of cosmic contraction & expansion."

    thats the Samaññaphala Sutta right.?
impressive, but there could be ambiguities in translation..
on some forums they say the word 'cosmic' isnt really the translated english word..

another thing is, what does cosmic contraction & expansion means.? dosent make any sense.. its either expand or contract... both doesn't happen simultaniously

I don't think it happens simultaneously. I think it means a series of expansion and contraction.

Nope. It says many contraction and expansion eons. That is the shortened form. We have to get the correct idea out from that. Because most of Buddhas teachings are in shortened form. But if you search through the Tripitaka, you can find the detailed explanations.

    its too long.? :dull:

    whats it about.?

Explanation of the world end and recreation is given in Tripitaka. Buddha explained about the universe and it's galaxies and stuff too.

There are fore main time periods. Each time period is extremely long. During the first time period, the universe is created. During the second time period, the universe remains stable. This is the time period in which the beings live in this universe. During the third time period, the universe is destroyed. And the final time period is the time period in which there is nothing (universe is destroyed). After this time period, the universe will start to recreate and the same cycle will continue forever creating and destroying the universe.

well thats vaguely parallel with current scientific understanding.
one theory is that universe going to end up in big freeze... if that happen there is no way a new universe can be created , unless through quantum tunneling :nerd: but that has very small probability.

Anyway how Buddha able to came this close to current scientific theory is quite astonishing. i will look at the video too.

you have to understand that Im not 100% agreeing with you. Buddhas knowledge was astonishing( even thought he inherited most of them from already existed eastern knowledge). But his knowledge was not perfect by any means... just astonishing compared to contemporary philosophers.

"But his knowledge was not perfect by any means"
How do you say his knowledge is not perfect?
