The premise of the upcoming film "Apollo 18" is that there was a secret, Department of Defense sponsored Apollo mission to the moon that found something up there. The caption on the poster reads: "There's a Reason we've Never Gone Back to the Moon."
Hint: It was not because of stupid politicians.
The trailer shows the movie, like "The Blair Witch Project," is based on the "found footage" technique, showing the fictional Apollo astronauts on the lunar surface being stalked by something. "Apollo 18" looks like a standard horror movie and not, as one would have hoped, an inside look at the machinations it would have taken to have pulled off a secret lunar mission in the early to mid 1970s.
Indeed how and why a secret Apollo mission would have taken place raises a lot of questions that one hopes the low-budget film manages to answer.
Why conduct a secret mission to the moon anyway?
One suspects that the government already knows about alien life forms on the moon already and is sending a crew of military astronauts for a closer look.
How does such a mission remain secret?
First, there is nothing quite as conspicuous as the launch of a Saturn V, the rocket that sent the Apollo missions to the moon, this side of a nuclear bomb explosion. So, realistically, the launch could not have taken place at the Kennedy Space Center or from the military space launch complex at Vandenberg. The only place a Saturn V could have been launched clandestinely would be at a secret base in the South Pacific.

Also, an Apollo moon mission involved literally tens of thousands of people, from servicing technicians to flight controllers. Is it realistic to assume that after almost four decades, no one has talked?
Who was the crew of Apollo 18?
The identities of NASA astronauts in the early 1970s were well known. If, as one suspects, the movie will show the guys not exactly making it back or making it back in a condition that requires their permanent residence in an isolation facility at Area 51, then one has to assume the crew was not part of the NASA program and was part of a secret, military program. There was actually a military manned space program in the early 1960s, but it was closed down during the Johnson administration and most of the military astronauts transitioned over to NASA.
Or, if we accept the film's premise, were they?
What kind of creature can survive the lack of breathable atmosphere, the intense heat and cold, and radiation on the lunar surface? One hopes there is an answer to that question that would seem scientifically sensible.
Finally, why keep an Apollo mission secret anyway? Surely if the purpose was to hunt for aliens, there could have been a cover story. But that would make a different movie entirely. Maybe the mission was classified to keep Sen. William Proxmire, an opponent of human space flight, from finding out.
"Apollo 18" is scheduled to open April 22 in the U.S.
Mark R. Whittington is the author of Children of Apollo and The Last Moonwalker. He has written on space subjects for a variety of periodicals, including The Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, USA Today, the L.A. Times, and The Weekly Standard.

This is just a sci-fi movie
there is no truth behind the fact that NASA and CIA tried to stop movie from premiering.
