Yes.. That' the general belief. There are over 3500 species of them. Out of the blood sucking ones only about 200 of them suck human blood - and only a few of them carry diseases. Out of the 90 odd harmless species , the "Elephant Mosquito" is used to fight Dengue, because their larvae eat other mosquito larvae! If you visit the Amazon areas these ones are there around even during the daylight. They don't bite.
We need NOT wipe out all the mosquitoes in this world. Only the ones that vector diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, West Nile Virus, and the Zika virus.
OTOH mosquitoes do not really play a major part in the ecosystem. It's true that there are many plants that are pollinated by them, but other insects are there too, to this job.
A few plants do exist that are preferentially mosquito pollinated, meaning other insects can pollinate them but mosquitoes are the most common and most efficient. All are orchids, namely cold-temperature ones and the female Aedes mosquito does this task.
