Gold is a low risk, low return investment. Investing purely in gold is a terrible idea. This is good for someone who maintains a portfolio of investments.
Gold prices these days are at a record high. Would be a bad time to buy.

You can't buy genuine gold coins minted by proper mints in Sri Lanka (you might be able to buy second hand). Go to Ravi Jewellers in Sea Street Pettah. You can buy locally minted gold coins. These are as good as proper coins in terms of holding value.

Importing raw gold to Sri Lanka without a license is illegal. But if you have a contact at a jewellery shop, you can find ways to trade gold.
