Yes, dude, It worths a lot. It's not that hard.
It would be easier if you have a vehicle or else it would be like learning to swim from the internet.
First, try to identify the most visible parts & their jobs.
Ex Axles, differentials, cv joints, oil sump, engine head, alternator, motor, radiator, air filter, brake pump, disks, fuel lines, steering rack, fuse box, headlight relays, lower/upper arms, gearbox, greasing nipples, chassis, mounts, shocks, fuel pump and so on.
Then try simple things
1. Check the oil level, coolant level, brake oil & refill
2. identify correct air pressure,
3. Check/replace the fuse
4. replace spare tire / know where to put the jack
5. remove the battery and install a new one
6. install viper blades
7. replace bulbs (mostly trail & blinkers)
8. inspect air filters and so on
Then learn about how different systems anatomy & how they work
1. How cooling systems works (radiator, water pump, horses & water flow)
2. Charging ( alternator, battery, cut-outs, wiring)
3. How AC is working and so on
Then you can try something which needs extra care
1. Replace burst radiator hoses
2. Replace belts
3. Clean Engine bay in a proper way
When you have a basic idea, you would be able to inspect a particular system and identify whether those are working correctly or not. These come with driving experience.
Ex you could say if the steering rack is gone, abnormal sounds on socks, vibrations from broken mounts, overheat symptoms, etc
Anyway, when it comes to car/van or cab, there is nothing much you can do if you happen into an engine breakdown. But it would help if you can tell what went wrong.
But if it is a bike, you can do almost everything except Clutch/ Engine replated things at home.
I am neither a mechanic nor an osthar, but I have some sense to know when something is broken. Mostly from driving, through observation what service station does, watching videos, using old Japanese bikes, vehicles & having spent ~10% of my life in garages
