I don't think this is correct. This seems to be a derivative of sanskrit/indian name Bhandari/Bhaandaru. This means "treasurer". Same as "bhandagarika".

Most Sinhalese names can be traced to Indian names. However, for a long time, India was Sri Lanka's enemy (they are still seen that way) and our ancestors tried to disconnect Indian influence as much as possible. They tried to give various local interpretations to Sanskrit/Tamil-derived words.

I've read that the name Banda/Bandara is the oldest; according to that source, this name is older than the Sinhalese race itself. It is a word of the oldest languages spoken by ancient clans, and Kondaya is also another word. I can't recall the book, but I read it about 15 years ago. That book has some stories and myths about the ancient demons of Lanka. I cannot verify this claim and recall the name of the book; it could be a made-up story.
