The original bunch were from Morocco who came in as traders. Morocco is the English name. The French still call it Maroc and the real name was broken down from its ancient capital Marrakesh.
That's why they were called 'marakkala' or "marakkaya". This is what I think.

Lols Sri Lankan Muslims came from Tamilnadu -India as merchants. They are literally Tamilians and no solid evidence their ancestors belong to Arab or Morocco.
