If you want to compare civil engineer and software engineer,

    Present
Most probably you will get a high salary as a Software engineer. And you can work on pleasant working environment (AC office). Civil engineer need to work with construction employees and most of the time in outdoor environment(not whole day).

    After 10 years

If you are a software engineer, at this point you have to either move to project manager(need to do some exams and have to take additional effort to change the career) or move on the technical side as tech lead or architect(for this also you need to learn new technologies).

If you are civil engineer, without much effort you can move to a project manager role. Still you may have to do some site visits(very minimum). Salary will be higher than software filed at this moment based on the company.

And there are lot of opportunities in middle east region for civil engineer. You can earn very high salary in these jobs(most probably the SL salary of project manager)

My personal opinion move with civil engineer. If possible find a good paying job in abroad ;);)

    1. Believe me machan, even though it depends on some factors, most of the fresh/junior civil engineers have to be present in the site (not in the office) for the whole day time.

    2. Yes. He has to do less site visits. But yet he has to stay in the office for long hours just like any other junior engineer.

    3. Please can you show me how did you compare it? Some examples.
I have examples. My analysis shows completely different picture than yours.

    4. Aren't there any job opportunities for engineers in IT/software field all over the world, not just in the Middle East?

I know many people working for software / IT / Tech based companies all over the world. The majority is in Singapore. Others are in Australia, The USA, Europian countries and Canada. And I don't know much people who are working in the Middle East as Civil Engineers or in any other country.

    5. My personal opinion is choose anything based on true facts.(not just someone say it is good/ it is the public opinion) And the most important thing is whether you are passionate about it or not /will not dissapoint about it or not.

You might be right about the facts about civil engineering field. I am not a civil engineer and those points are made based on feedback of my friends(civil engineer friends)

But I know about the IT field and software engineer also very stressful job. You can say that IFS or handful of other companies have stress less working environments. But the thing is on IT field you cannot stick to one company. In order to improve your knowledge / career path and salary, you have to change the jobs time to time. So when comparing stress, you might have same stress in both fields.

If I talk about Singapore, I know lot of engineers from Mora University are working as Software engineers in Singapore. But not sure about the Singa job opportunities for civil engineer, you can check this. But the thing is compare to Singa salary(after removing the living cost - Singa living cost is very high) middle east salary is high. (But you will not have the same life style). This is same for European counties such as Germany and Sweden.

But most important thing is career growth. Now in IT field compilation is very high. Lot of fresh graduates are coming from various government and private universities. Most of them have software engineering bachelors degree. In order to have a healthy career growth you have learn new thing competition. This is not the case 10 years ago. The graduates from 10 years ago(engineers) are now in good positions. Due to compilation you might not get the same career growth easily.

As per my knowledge the competition is less in civil engineer field.(also based on conversation with others )

Anyway this is my personal opinion. And my opinion is open to debate.

Happy so see someone open for debate. :) And my opinions and examples also open to debate.

Luckily, your civil engineer friends may have been doing less stressful civil engineer jobs. But the thing is as I know there are only very very few opportunities. Also there are drawbacks. Those positions are not permanent. just contract type for some projects. also less paid. Ask them about what about the majority of their batch and then you will see. Also then compare them with the Computer science batchmates. :)

If you want to compare I will give you some ideas.
    1. Check working hours per day, number of days per month,
    2. What they get paid PER HOUR.
    3. How many leaves per year
    4. Working environment

Then if someone say there are better opportunities in Civil engineering than CS, I have to agree with them.
But the thing is so far no one did that.. :D

Here I agree with only one thing with you. That is the gaining new knowledge and being updated in the subject. Compared to IT there is just nothing to be updated in Civil. Because in Sri Lanka most of the graduates cannot even do a related job of what they learned. (Ex : Civil engineer is taught to design but less than 1%-2% get the chance to do design. ) Even if they do design there is very less amount to be updated with time.

And I have plenty of examples to prove others are not true , if someone want. And that is not some extra-ordinary cases just the average people.

For the IT filed below are the answers,

    1. Check working hours per day, number of days per month,

Generally 8 hours. And 5 days per week. But based on the project deadline some times you may have to do some extra work.
If you do the extra work food and transport will be provided by the company. Most of the time OT is not paid(90%).

    2. What they get paid PER HOUR.

For a fresh graduate(engineering), can get around 50K-100K. Some companies paid more than that as well.

    3. How many leaves per year
    Generally 28 leaves per year.

    Casual - 7
    Medical - 7
    Annual -14 (after confirmation)

    4. Working environment
Casual working environment. No strict in and out times. Can come any time and cover the hours. All the employees are treated as same level. Most companies have play area/ relaxing are to have fun during work hours.
