    Cancers

Cancer or metastasis is the abnormal and uncontrolled multiplication of cells, which has been attributed to various triggers that results in genetic manipulation causing disturbance in the controlled and normal cell cycle, thereby leading to malignant outgrowth of tissues.
There is some kind of awareness about cancer, and there is some knowledge that cancer is not treatable if not diagnosed at early and initial stages.
However, many a times, cancer has been the silent killer. Some of the deadliest cancers that have been identified are discussed below based on the death rates.

    Lung and Bronchial Cancers

This has claimed the most number of lives so far in the world, in the past five years, and has been attributed mainly due to the habits of smoking and tobacco. This usually strikes in the age of 55 and 65.
This cancer is of two types: non-small cell lung cancer that is less rapid in spreading and small cell lung cancer that is more rapid in spreading the disease.
    Colon Cancer

Colon Cancer is the rapid outgrowth of tissues in the colon, while rectal cancers is the outgrowth of excessive tissues in the last few inches of the intestines near the anus, initially beginning clumps and later growing out as tissues of polyps, which may or may not be malignant. When these two occurs together, this is known as colorectal cancers.
    Breast Cancer

Being the second most common cancer in women, next to skin cancer, this is also one of the most commonly researched cancers that have proven improvements in treatment. This cancer has been recently found to occur in men also, and this cancer usually occurs in the ducts and the cells that produce the milk, and later spreading to the fatty tissues lying adjacent to the lymph nodes in the underarm, which is the major route for spreading to the other organ systems of the body.
    Pancreatic Cancer

If you find that you are continuously finding one or the other problem in digestion and regulation of metabolism, could also be due to pancreatic cancer, as this is one of the main tissues that aids in maintaining the blood glucose levels.
    Prostate Cancer

This is the second most common agent of cancer that causes death in men, following lung and bronchial. This is the gland that secretes the seminal fluid, which transports the sperm for dissemination from sperm producing cells. A regular biopsy following observation of lumpiness in the prostate regions can aid in detecting the cancerous tissues in the initial stages itself, and most the times, though the cancer confines themselves to the gland, this can actually turn aggressive and spread massively to other tissues.
    Leukemia

Leukemia is the most widely studied and researched type of cancer, and has various modifications in the way they affect and in the type of cells they affect. Of all the types of leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia has been the most detrimental type of cancer. Overall, leukemia is the cancer that affects the blood forming tissues resulting in increased number of white blood cell counts than the normal level.
    Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

This cancer is caused by affecting the white blood cells, which affects the lymphocytes, and is characterized by larger lymph nodes, fever and weight loss. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more deadly than Hodgkin lymphoma, which is also of two types as fast and slow growing cancer cells.
Liver and Intrahepatic Bile Duct Cancer

While this is one of the most common type of cancers around the world other than the United States. Yet another cancer similar to liver is the bile duct cancer that carries some of the digestion requisite fluids to the small intestines and is in close proximity t the liver.
    Ovarian Cancer

This was once the most common cancer, and was ranking the fourth most deadly form of cancer affecting women, whilst the cancer has been observed to be of common occurrence in women who are of the age of 63. However, an interesting fact about this cancer is that this is easier to treat if detected in the early stages, however, is very hard to diagnose in the early stages unlike breast cancer. Some of the common symptoms will include abdominal discomfort, urgency to urinate and pelvic pain.
    Esophageal Cancer

This cancer occurs in the esophagus, which has been observed mostly in the lower part of the esophagus, and is quite common in men than in women.
    Cure for Cancer

There are a number of treatment methods available for the treatment of cancer, while some of the common treatment methods will include chemotherapeutic methods, radiation and alternative treatments. However, all these treatments can cure cancer only in the initial stages when the symptoms of this deadly disease are asymptomatic, and is not easily observed, unless you are lucky. Maybe this is the reason why this disease is usually called “the silent killer”.
The reason why with so many drugs and knowledge on the physiology and the mechanism of cancer causing cells are known, the reason for not being to able to cure cancer is that the number of agents causing cancer are more, which ranges from various radiation to chemicals to viruses, causing alteration to the genes resulting in uncontrolled cell cycle.
Yet another problem of these cancer-causing cells is that they fake as if responding to the treatments being imposed, and then resurface again making things more complex. In addition, the current cancer treatments and the agents for curing cancer are quite painful, expensive and have a number of side effects, and will therefore can cause social complex and emotional crisis in the patient, which may further worsen the conditions.
In future, while the treatment of cancer is getting focused on providing more target and cell-specific delivery of drugs and radiation, other sessions like preparation to face life, societal and emotional counselling sessions for the patients, their friends, family members and relatives are in progress for advancing the treatment of cancer.

Dust Mite Allergies are none other than the common dust allergy, sometimes triggered by even the most limited exposure to dust. Dust Mite Allergies are probably the most common allergies affecting millions not just in the United States but around the world.
    What are Dust Mites?

Dust Mites are microscopic organisms that are found everywhere within a household from bedding to carpet and from the upholstery of a couch to doormats. Dust mites are related to spiders and are from the Dermatophagoides family. Dust mites are found all over the world and two to three of its species make up most of its population. Dust mites only multiply in hot and humid conditions, though adequate heating conditions may even make them survive the winters with ease. Dust mites can survive different climatic conditions and can even occur at high altitudes. Dust mites live on the dead skin cells of people which explain their abundance where these particles are most found.
    http://www.coolhealthguides.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Dust-Mite-Allergies.jpgImage by Adams999

    Causes of Dust Allergies

As the name suggest, Dust Mite Allergies are caused by dust mites, which are little microscopic organisms that live in dust particles. These organisms exist wherever dust particles are found, regardless of a particular space. Every individual is not only surrounded by them but are even exposed to them. However, some individuals cannot tolerate the exposure and develop an allergic reaction to them.
An allergic reaction is triggered by the waste protein materials of the dust mites and these can be often seen suspended in the air in the sunlight. An average dust mite produces no less than 2,000 fecal material particles in its life time, which hardly lasts a week. Even dead dust mites can cause an allergic reaction.
Dust mites are not the only reasons behind the development of a dust allergy, as the dust commonly found in our homes, offices and other building contains a number of other materials which can be allergenic in nature. These include fabric fibers, dead skin cells, food particles, small plant particles, insect particles, fungus spores, molds and other impurities.

    Symptoms of Dust Allergies

Before you assume that you dust mite allergy, the following signs and symptoms should be checked. While dust mite allergies can remain asymptomatic, there are several symptoms that can be experienced and can vary from person to person.

    • Sneezing
    • Runny nose
    • Nasal congestion
    • Nasal tract inflammation
    • Facial pressure and pain
    • Watery eyes
    • Itching in the eyes
    • Redness of the eyes
    • Coughing
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest tightness
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Wheezing
    • Trouble sleeping with frequent interruptions Runny nose nasal cavities

      Source by : wikimedia
Risk Factors of Dust Mite Allergies

If you are consistently living in a dusty environment, then your risk to develop dust allergies is obviously increased. However, not all people develop dust allergies despite that factor.
    Family History

People with other members of the family suffering from dust mite allergy are more likely to be affected of it.
    Age

People are more likely to develop dust allergies in childhood and early adolescence or adulthood. The sooner the exposure is made to dust mite in a person’s life, the more likely is the development of the dust mite allergy.
    Complications of Dust Mite Allergies

The allergic reaction to dust mites can possibly result into several complications. The allergy can possibly develop into serious conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia if not treated.
However, the following are the most major and common complications of dust mite allergy.
    Asthma

Asthma is the inflammation of the airways characterized by dangerous symptoms such as reverse air flow obstruction. Dust mites are the most common cause of asthma. The symptoms of those who already suffer from asthma can become worse on exposure to dust mites.

    Source by : flickr
    Sinusitis

Sinus infections are often caused by dust mites since they can block nasal passages, resulting in the inflammation of the sinus cavities. These infections can be chronic in nature.
    Hay Fever

Hay Fever or Allergic Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal passage. Dust mites are one of the triggers of this allergic reaction. The common name of the condition is a misnomer since it does not involve any fever.
    Diagnosis of Dust Mite Allergies

The symptoms of dust mite allergies can be easily confused with those of a number of other common conditions such as flu. However, if the physician suspects that the patient has dust mite allergies, then he or she could recommend the following diagnostic tests. Apart from physical examination, which includes the inspection of your nasal lining, a physician could recommend skin allergy tests. In this test, the skin is pricked and if an itchy and red bump appears on the skin as an allergic reaction, then it is a clear sign of a dust mite allergy. If that is not possible, then blood tests are carried out to check for antibodies responsible for allergies. The immunoglobin or the IgE antibody is responsible for the allergy.

    Treatment of Dust Mite Allergies

    Dust Mite Allergies Drugs

There are a number of drugs prescribed to the patients of dust allergies, depending on the particular condition and symptoms. Many of these drugs are also used to treat seasonal allergy symptoms.
    Anti-inflammatory
Flunisolide, Cromolyn Sodium, Budesonide and Montelukast.
    Antihistamines
Prescribed to lower the allergenic antibodies in the body with drugs such as Loratadine, Desloratadine, Cetirizine and Diphenhydramine.
    Decongestants
Prescribed to treat inflammation in rhinitis with drugs such as Pseudophedrine, Phenylephrine and Nasal Corticosteroid Spray.
    Cromolyn Sodium
Prescribed for symptom alleviation and prevention of the release of an immune system chemical triggering allergic reactions.
    Leukotriene Modifiers
Prescribed for alleviating several side effects such as dental pain and headache by preventing the release of an immune system chemical.
    Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy involves the injection of certain drugs that train the immune system not to make an allergic reaction to certain triggers. The treatment spans over a period of three to six months involving weekly maintenance shots and is only recommended when other treatment methods do not work.
    Nasal Irrigation
In the case of sinusitis, nasal irrigation is used which involves the rinsing of your nasal cavity with saline solution using a specially designed instrument for the purpose, commonly known as Neti Pot.
    Dust Mite Allergies Prevention

The best way to avoid an allergic reaction is to prevent exposure to dust mites as much as possible and it is more effective than any treatment method. Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners to decrease humidity in your environment. You should reduce the possibility of exposure to dust mites by regular cleaning of your house and ensuring minimum exposure to dust if you are cleaning yourself. Furniture upholstery and carpets are the favorite homes of dust mites and regular cleaning by means of a vacuum cleaner can minimize their occurrence. Ensure that your working space is not cluttered, since that easily traps dust.

    Source by : flickr
Children are more likely to develop dust mite and other allergies so make sure that you choose the best allergenic foods for babies with possible food allergies. Observe allergy patterns in your baby such as rash, diarrhea and difficulty in breathing and avoid or minimize the use of known allergenic foods such as milk, eggs, fish, soy and wheat.
Minimize contact with objects known to harbor dust mites. Clean surfaces with a damp wipe to remove dust and dust mites. Only purchase the stuff toys which are machine-washable to avoid exposure to dust mites through them. Use allergen-proof bed sheets to avoid frequent allergic reactions.
A little precaution can save you from a lot of pain and discomfort if you have been suffering from dust mite allergies.

Problems related to the digestive tract are some of the most common health threats all around the world. There are a large number of stomach problems which could have varying causes and are dealt with in different ways. However, what people refer to as “stomach diseases” could actually involve anything with abdominal pain and indigestion such as conditions like chronic pancreatitis. The term is used broadly and may cover several medical conditions, which is why you should first understand what stomach is.
    Understanding the Stomach

Stomach is a sac like organ found in the upper abdominal cavity and is the central part of the digestive system. The stomach is connected to the esophagus or the food canal which is a tube like structure that takes the swallowed food inside the stomach. The stomach stores the food for a while and digests it before it is fit to pass it on to the small intestine. The opening into which stomach passes on the food is called duodenum. The gastric juices inside the stomach also contain 0.1% Hydrochloric acid for dissolving the food in a better way. The stomach is primarily concerned with the digestion of protein and its absorption.
    Types of Stomach Diseases

You must understand the difference between abdominal pain and a problem that really pertains to your stomach. The following are the types of stomach problems.

    Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Also commonly known as Acid Reflux Disease or Heartburn, occurs when stomach acid jumps into the esophagus.

    Gastritis

Inflammation, infection or erosion of the stomach wall.
    Gastroparesis

    Delayed gastric emptying.
    Gastroenteritis

Infection of the stomach wall and the intestines. Also known as Gastro or Gastric flu.
Acid Production Irregularities: The underproduction of acid known as Hypochlorhydria and excessive acid production such as in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which also involves the occurrence of tumors and ulcers originating from organs other than the stomach.

    Causes of Stomach Diseases

There are several causes of stomach problems ranging from poor hygiene to poor dietary habits and from infections to reaction from certain foods. Eating disorders could result in certain stomach problems as well. The causes of various stomach problems are detailed according to the condition.
    Gastroesophageal Reflex Disease (GERD)

Hiatal Hernia may be the leading reason behind the condition. Pregnancy can also cause acid reflux. Obesity, overeating, lying down right after eating, eating food with a lot of fat, eating before going to sleep and certain exercises such as an ab workout can cause acid reflux disease as well. Some medicines such tricyclic antidepressants and aspirin can cause the condition as well. The damage caused by smoking and drinking can also result in the condition. Food commonly known to cause the condition are citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, coffee, chocolate, regular tea, spicy food, garlic, onion, tomato rich cuisine and mint.
    Gastritis

Gastritis is caused by the damage to the mucosal defensive wall of the stomach. Acute Gastritis is caused by alcohol consumption. Chronic Gastritis is caused by the infection of the Helicobacter pylori. The condition is also caused by bile reflux, pernicious anemia and other bacterial and viral infections.

Gastroparesis is caused by the damage to vagus nerve which regulates the normal stomach movement. Some of the causes of the condition include hypertension, diabetes and viral infections. Gastroparesis can develop as a complication after gastric surgery.
    Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is very common in the developing world due to poor hygiene and use of polluted drinking water. The condition is primarily caused by the virus called rotavirus and bacterial species Escherichia coli and Campylobacter among other infecting microbes.
    Acid Production Irregularities

Acid production irregularities may be caused by one of the factors including hormone-secreting growths, infection of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria, certain medicines and tumors. These irregularities may also appear as a complication to surgery. Exposure to radiation and aging are also risk factors.
    Ulcers

Gastric ulcers are primarily caused by the infection of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. The use of NSAIDs can also cause the condition. Smoking is also said to be a risk factor of the development of stomach ulcers. Gastrinoma can cause severe ulcers which are very difficult to cure.
    Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is caused primarily by the infection of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Smoking is also caused to a critical factor leading to the development of stomach cancer. Iodine deficiency could also lead to stomach cancer.
    Common Symptoms of Stomach Diseases

The following are the most common stomach problems. However, not all symptoms may appear in a particular stomach problem. The presence or absence of a particular symptom may not necessarily mean that you are suffering from a particular stomach problem or not and you should always refer to a physician in order to get the condition diagnosed correctly.

    Treatment of Stomach Diseases

The treatment of stomach problems is explained according to the condition.
    Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Mild cases may find relief with over the counter medicines such as anatacids and acid reducers or the combination of the both. Prescription medicines include Histamine-2 Blockers such as Zantac, proton pump inhibitors such as Aciphex and promotility agents such as Reglan.
Lifestyle modifications such as eating in moderation, eating slowly, not sleeping right after eating, avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol, losing weight and keeping a heartburn log could help you get over the condition even without any other treatment.
    Gastritis

Mild gastritis is treated with non-prescription antacids. More powerful prescription medicines such as nizatidine and cimetidine could also be administered. In chronic gastritis, the aim of the treatment is the inactivity and destruction of the Helicobacter pylori bacteria colony in the stomach. Antibiotics, Cytroprotective agents and proton pump inhibitors may be prescribed for the purpose.
NSAIDs and aspirin can make the condition worse and if these medicines are required to be taken, a complementing protective medicine to prevent further damage to the stomach should also be taken. Drinking milk is also said to be helpful for reducing the bacterial activity.
    Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is usually not cured and is a chronic problem. However, certain medicines such can help manage the condition in a better way. Medicines such as antiemetics are administered to control nausea and antimotility agent Reglan is taken to help the food move down the stomach by stimulating muscular contraction. Reglan is also helpful in reducing vomiting and nausea. Erythromycin is also used for inducing the similar muscular contraction. Both the drugs have diarrhea as a frequent side effect.
Gastroparesis is best treated through dietary modifications which involve eating several smaller meals. Liquid diets and food which does not leave residue behind are suitable. Food high in fiber and fat should be avoided. In serious cases intravenous nutrition, electrical stimulation for better food processing and a feeding tube are used.
    Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is treated by adequately hydrating the patient. Oral rehydration therapy is carried out for the purpose. The disease usually does not require any medicines for its treatment, especially if it is a viral infection.
However, medicines may be used to control symptoms such as antiemetics for vomiting. Antibiotics may be administered for severe infections but are not required in most cases.
    Acid Production Irregularities

Hypochlorhydria or underproduction of stomach acid is treated with Betain HCL supplements. Other dietary supplements containing minerals and vitamins particularly Vitamin B12 are administered. Probiotics, antibiotics and antifungal medicine could also be prescribed in case of infections.
Excessive stomach acid production is curbed by proton pump inhibitors.
    Ulcers

Ulcers are primarily treated with antacids in younger patients. In case of ulcers caused by bacterial infections of Helicobacter pylori, more complex antibiotic treatment is carried out. The regimen includes using a combination of antibiotics, such as Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin, with a proton pump inhibitor. Carafate is also used for the treatment. Over the counter medicines such as Ranitidine is effective in curbing symptoms.
NSAIDs worsen ulcers among many other acidic conditions and if are required to be taken may be accompanied with protective medicine such as a prostaglandin analogue.
    Stomach Cancer

Stomach cancer is mostly treated with surgery. However, the prognosis depends on the stage of the cancer. The surgery aims for the removal of the entire or part of the stomachs including all the cancer cells or tumors and even the adjoining lymph nodes to prevent further growth of malignant cells. Innovative surgical procedures such as Endoscopic Mucosal Resection are also used which involves the removal of the lining of the stomach wall along with the cancer cells instead of the removal of the organ.
Other treatment methods include radiation therapy. It is often used in combination with surgery. It is effective in reducing the tumor and the pain caused by it. Chemotherapy is also used but is not particularly effective in the case of stomach cancer. Another approach is to combine the all possible treatment methods known as Multimodality Therapy.

Abdominal pain occurs for a number of reasons but not every such pain means that it is your appendix that is causing the problem. Appendix pain is usually caused by the inflammation and the bacterial infection of the appendix. Appendix Pain, or more correctly, Appendicitis is a serious condition which could even result in the rupture of appendix.
    What is Appendix?

An appendix, anatomically known as the vermiform appendix, is a small tubular appendage at the end of the first part of the colon known as the cecum. The appendix has the likeness of a worm and is close ended and opens into the cecum where it drains the mucus produced by its inner walls. The function of the appendix is holding microorganisms for digestive and immunity purposes. The appendix is made out of muscular walls, also featuring lymphatic tissues. The muscular walls of the appendix are weak and are liable to rupture on infection.

    Appendix Signs and Symptoms

The first thing that you should know about is the signs and symptoms of Appendicitis.

    • Acute abdominal pain concentrated to the lower right portion near the pelvic.
    • Fever
    • Nausea or Vomiting
    • Loss of Appetite
    • Moderate to severe tenderness of the abdomen
    • The appearance of the McBurney’s point, which is an area between the belly button and the hip bone on the right side, caused by the extension of the inflammation of the appendix to the peritoneum or the lining of the abdomen.
In case you notice all these symptoms occurring simultaneously, the most important of which is the severe abdominal pain that the condition is known for, then you should immediately seek medical attention.
    Acute Appendicitis

    Cause of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is caused by the inflammation and bacterial infection of the appendix. The appendix is a small worm like extension of the cecum, which is the initial segment of the colon, the ending portion of the intestines. Appendicitis is caused by the blocking of the opening of the appendix into the cecum. The blockage of the opening of the appendix can be caused for a number of reasons.
Mucus is produced inside the appendix, which can dry and solidify, blocking the entrance from the appendix into the cecum. Another reason for the blockage of the opening of the appendix is the entrance of feces into the appendix, which later hardens like a rock. This structure is known as a fecalith for this reason and causes the swelling of the appendix. This occurrence is more common in children. The appendix already contains bacteria which on blockage of its entrance start infecting the walls of the structure and the body responds by inflammation.

    Source by : wikimedia
Most of the time, appendicitis results in the formation of an abscess known as the peri-appendiceal abscess.
    Complications of Appendicitis

The primary complication of appendicitis is the rupture of appendix, which can when the infection breaks through the wall of the appendix. Once the infection breaks through the appendix, it can spread to other parts of the abdomen. However, a rupture does not occur in most of the cases and the infection only results in the formation of a local abscess.
The infection could spread to the lining of the abdomen and the pelvis known as peritonitis. Appendicitis could also lead to intestine blockage. One of the rare and potentially lethal complications of appendicitis is sepsis, which is blood poisoning that occurs with the infection spreading to the blood stream.
    Diagnosis of Appendicitis

The diagnosis of appendicitis is primarily made through a physical examination, involving checking for the obvious symptoms of appendicitis, which mostly involves a tender lower right abdomen. In order to determine whether peritoneum infection has occurred, the physician checks for rebound tenderness by releasing the pressure on the abdomen quickly. However, there are a few other tests made to confirm the diagnosis.
    White Blood Cell Count

The test is carried out to confirm the infection, which involves the increase in the number of White Blood Cells.
    Urinalysis

The microscopic analysis of urine for checking red and white blood cells. The urine is also tested for the presence of bacteria. However, this test usually offers normal results and abnormal results are often caused by other urinary tract infections.
    CT scan

CT scan for confirming appendicitis in patients who are not pregnant.
    X-rays

X-rays of the Abdomen are recommended for locating the fecalith.
    Ultrasound

Ultrasound is useful for diagnosis in women to eliminate confusion with the conditions of the ovaries and other female reproductive organs
    Barium Enema

A type of X-ray test that involves the insertion of liquid barium from anus into the colon confirming the inflammation of the appendix and eliminating similar problems that could be confused with appendicitis such as Chron’s Disease.
    Laproscopy

A surgical test involving the insertion of a small tube with a camera in the abdomen, which offers a direct view of the inflamed appendix.
The stitches the day after having his appendix removed by laparoscopic surgery

    Source by : wikimedia
One or more of these tests may be recommended but none assure the diagnosis of appendicitis with absolute certainty and requires continued examination. Furthermore, there are a number of other diseases which can closely emulate the signs and symptoms of appendicitis such as Kidney disease, Pelvic inflammatory disease, right-sided diverticulitis and right upper abdomen inflammatory disease.
    Appendicitis Treatment

While appendicitis may heel over time in some patients with just the use of antibiotics, usually an appendectomy or the surgical removal of the appendix is the most common treatment of the condition. Antibiotics may be prescribed before and after the surgery. Even if the infected appendix heels without the requirement of its removal, the pus still needs to be drained outside the body.

What are the Causes of Traction Alopecia and its Treatment?

Posted by admin in Diseases and Conditions at September 19, 2011
Tags: alopecia, causes of traction alopecia, general hair loss, hair loss, hair loss in women, traction alopecia, traction alopecia in men, traction alopecia in women, treatment of traction alopecia

    Table of Contents

Traction Alopecia is one form of Alopecia (slow and gradual hair loss) which is caused by external causes; it is neither a medical condition, nor is it something genetic. It is most common in African-American women; but it can be seen in any other adult or child.
Traction Alopecia is seen in people who either heavily braid their hair most of the time or in people who tug on their hair a lot or keep it covered with a hat, helmet or scarf. The reason behind this is that a constant pull, tension or rubbing against the skin where the hair grows can cause the hair follicle and the dermal papilla to become damaged resulting in hair thinning and gradual hair loss.
Experts suggest that traction alopecia does not cause general hair loss on the head, but if there is an existing hair loss problem then traction alopecia can aggravate it. Prolonged scalp condition of traction alopecia can also result in baldness from that spot. This condition then becomes irreversible; however if it is treated on time then the hair loss can end before causing baldness.
    Traction Alopecia

Below are listed some of the common causes of Traction Alopecia.
    Causes of Traction Alopecia

    • Traction alopecia in men is most commonly caused by excessive use of hats, helmets, headphones or in the case of African-Americans, excessive braiding. Many men are required to either wear hats or helmets for prolonged time due to the nature of their job. This rubbing of tight or heavy headwear on the scalp can cause traction alopecia. Sikh men also suffer from Traction alopecia because they constantly wear a turban to cover their hair.

    • Traction Alopecia, in women, usually results from tight braiding or wearing scarfs and caps on a regular basis. African-American women and girls are habitual of wearing their hair in tight long braids. These braids exert a constant pulling force on the head causing traction alopecia in that area. But it is not only the African-American women, women in Japan also suffer from traction alopecia due to their distinctive hair styles. Girls who make tight pony tails with their hair also have the chance of suffering from this condition.
    Treatment of Traction Alopecia

Because it is not a medical condition, traction alopecia usually does not require taking or applying a medicine. If you have started to notice it in your hair and you think that it is caused by any of the above mentioned causes, then it is better to stop doing whatever it is causing traction alopecia, like avoid wearing a hat or making lose braids or lose hair styles.
