    Eye Care Tips

    1. Nutrition makes a difference
Howard B. Goldman, M.D., an ophthalmologist with Eye Associates of Boca Raton in Florida, says people should focus on an “anti-inflammatory diet”: avoiding red meats; eating more foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids, including cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and halibut; and avoiding saturated fats. Instead, they should use monounsaturated fats like olive oil.

“It seems that inflammation is at the base of a lot of diseases, including macular degeneration. Eating anti-inflammatory foods and watching your dietary intake of antioxidants [substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals] are important and do seem to help prevent some of the age-related disease processes like macular degeneration and cataracts,” Goldman says.

Eat lots of green, leafy veggies, says Lylas Mogk, M.D., an ophthalmologist who practices in Livonia, Mich. These include kale, collard greens and spinach, which are rich in lutein, an antioxidant that research shows may help preserve eye health and deter the risk of macular degeneration. Wolfberries, which are rich in zeaxanthin, also may be beneficial.

Mogk also recommends taking flaxseed, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and avoiding artificial fats in low-fat baked goods. Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acid foods might also help with dry eyes, he says.

Diet is at the root of many diseases that can affect the eyes, according to James Banta, M.D., a board-certified ophthalmologist and assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida.

“High blood pressure has been linked to a multitude of eye problems, including macular degeneration and hypertensive retinopathy. Diabetes can cause severe problems in the eyes. High cholesterol can cause problems in the blood supply of the eyes. That all comes down to diet,” Banta says.

    2. Protect your eyes from the sun

Sun exposure has been linked to cataract formation and, possibly, macular degeneration. And not just any old tinted glasses will help, according to Banta.

To protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, you need to make sure your regular glasses and sunglasses have 100% UV protection. “That is completely separate from any tint. The fact is that you can have clear lenses with UV coating that will protect you from the harmful rays of the sun,” Banta says.

Goldman uses the term “ultraviolet absorbing lenses” and writes on all his glasses prescriptions that patients should receive lenses with UV 400, which blocks rays shorter than 400 nanometers.

“UV 400 reduces the exposure of the eye, and surface of the eye, and the lens and the retina from UV light,” Goldman says. “If you buy over-the-counter sunglasses, look for the words ‘UV absorbing.’ ”

UV protective glasses do more than protect against cataracts and other eye diseases. UV rays can also cause growths on the eye’s surface that are called pterygium). This sun damage, which can appear as yellow bumps on the eye’s surface, can decrease vision and require surgery, Banta says.

    3. Exercise

While there is controversy about whether exercising the eyes with eye movements helps preserve vision or prevent disease, there is research that suggests aerobic exercise, in general, reduces eye pressure — which can be beneficial in the case of glaucoma, according to Goldman.

    4. Of course, don’t smoke!
Smoking increases the risk for eye diseases and vision problems, according to research. Smoking damages blood vessels, causing them to constrict and form atherosclerotic plaques — which can deprive the eye tissue of oxygen.

    5. Consider eye health at work
While computer use won’t harm your eyes in the long term, experts say, working at a computer can cause eye fatigue and symptoms such as tired, dry, itchy or burning eyes.
People can prevent eye stress by sitting correctly at the computer with the screen positioned slightly below the line of sight, according to optometrist Mary Bartuccio, O.D., assistant professor of optometry at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The screen shouldn’t be inches away (too close) or so far that you cannot see the print, easily, she says. “People who need bifocal or trifocal lenses have to talk to their eye care doctors to determine what that distance [from the computer should be].”

Glare can create eye strain. People can combat glare at work with antireflective coatings on their computer screens as well as antireflective coatings on their glasses, Bartuccio says.

To help with the strain that artificial lighting can cause on the eyes, Bartuccio recommends that people convert to incandescent light from a regular soft white lightbulb or have lamps on their desks with incandescent light that illuminates the work area evenly.

    6. Have thorough eye exams
Banta says one of the most proactive steps that people can take to protect their vision is to have a complete eye exam early in adulthood and then periodic exams as they get older, depending on their family history and individual risk of eye disease. People 65 and older should have annual eye exams because their risk for eye diseases rises dramatically.

    How to Clean the Eye:

    • First, wash your hands with soap and water.
    • Use a cotton ball to clean your eye.
    • Pour the eye wash solution on the cotton ball. Alternatively, you can boil the cotton balls in water and use them after they have cooled down.
    • Wipe your eye gently from the inside (near your nose) out (toward your ears).
    • Don’t use the same cotton ball more than once.
    • Don’t let your children play with medicine bottles.
    • When you open a bottle, do so by keeping the nozzle a little away from your face and eyes.
    • Do not let your children handle glass bottles.
    • Put bottles in the fridge, not in the freezer.
    • Choose safe toys for your children, which suit their age. Avoid buying darting toys and toys with sharp edges such as bow and arrow, which may hit or injure the eye from a distance.
    • Watch your children while at play, and teach them safe activities. Stone throwing during the play causes severe injuries, which should be avoided.
    • Keep daily use items like detergents, disinfectants and chemicals in a safe place and out of children’s reach.
    • Don’t allow your children to play with fireworks, which are dangerous. Have a close supervision during festivals like Diwali. Always keep a bucket of water nearby while bursting crackers.
    • Keep children away from kitchenware which could harm them. Knives, scissors, etc should be kept in a safe, closed place.
    • Teach your children how to protect their eyes by wearing sunglasses whenever they are out. You should also prevent them from looking directly at the sun.
    • Don’t allow your children to use laser pens.

Learn About Different Types of Allergies

    Code:
    http://www.coolhealthtips.com/

An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the immune system of the body to what is otherwise considered a harmful foreign object. There are different types of allergies that a person may suffer from.
Some of the most important types are as follows.
    Types of Allergies

The following allergy types are the most common allergy types.

    • Bee Sting Allergy
    • Cosmetic Allergy Hives

      Source by : wikimedia
    • Drug Allergy
    • Dust Mite Allergy
    • Eye Allergy
    • Food Allergy
    • Latex Allergy
    • Mold Allergy
    • Pet Allergy
    • Plant Allergy
    • Pollen or Spring Allergy
    • Salicylate Allergy
    • Sun Allergy
    Bee Sting Allergy

While swelling and pain is normal reaction to a bee sting, a bee sting allergy involves additional allergic reaction. Bee sting allergies are not too uncommon with an estimated 2 million Americans suffering from it.
    Symptoms
Dizziness, difficulty in breathing, wheezing, swelling of the face and the mouth, Hives or itchy rash, anxiety, restless.
    Cosmetic Allergy

The allergic reactions to various cosmetic and make up products is known as cosmetic allergy. This includes perfumes, shampoos and moisturizers. Cosmetic allergy is not uncommon but serious conditions are rare. Cosmetic allergy leads to the conditions of Allergic Contract Dermatitis and Irritant Contract Dermatitis. The symptoms of cosmetic allergy mostly appear around the face and the neck.
    Symptoms
skin irritation, injured skin cells, rash, itching and swelling.
    Drug Allergy

Several drugs can trigger an allergic reaction in many people. However, it must not be confused with the side effects of the particular drug. The drug reaction occurs abnormally when the immune system of the body treats it as a threatening foreign body and attacks it by releasing histamine. Antibiotics such as penicillin and other drugs such as insulin are common sources of allergic reactions.
Symptoms: Skin rash, hives, anxiety, fainting, itchiness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, difficulty in breathing, blueness of the skin, abdominal pain and rapid pulse.
    Dust Mite Allergy

    House dust mite

    Source by : wikimedia
Dust mites are small insects found with dust particles can trigger an allergic reaction leading to conditions such as Asthma, Sinusitis and Hay Fever or Allergic Rhinitis. Dust mites feed on shed human skin flakes and are present almost anywhere indoors where dust is found and the best way to find relief from its symptom is avoiding a dusty environment and regular cleaning. It is one of the leading causes of rhinorrhea and nasal congestion.
    Symptoms
Sneezing, rhinorrhea or runny nose, nasal tract inflammation, nasal congestion, watery and itchy eyes, eye redness, coughing, nausea or vomiting, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and difficulty in sleeping.
    Eye Allergy

    Source by : flickr
Eye allergy is also known as Allergic Conjunctivitis. The condition is caused when conjunctiva of the eyes is inflamed as an allergic reaction. Conjunctiva is a layer of tissues in the eye that line the eyeball white and the inner eyelid and is responsible for keeping the eye moist.
    Symptoms
Redness in the white of the eyeball, itchiness in the eye, blurred vision, watery eyes, eyelid swelling.
    Food Allergy

    Source by : flickr
Several types of food can trigger an allergic reaction in a lot of people. Food allergies in children and babies are mostly related to milk and eggs. Some of the common examples of food allergies include allergy to milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, peanuts, other nuts and wheat. Food with molds such as cheese, bread, yeast, mushrooms, soy sauce, canned juices and also cause allergies in some people. Food with sulfite such as baked items, potato chips, pickled foods, beer, wine and tea can also cause allergies.
Food allergy is a different condition to food intolerance, which is a digestive system disorder involving symptoms such as diarrhea, flatulence, constipation and abdominal cramps when a certain type of food, such as milk, is consumed.
    Symptoms
Itching in the mouth, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in swallowing, hives, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
    Latex Allergy

The material latex or rubber can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. The allergy is primarily caused by accessories and clothing featuring this material, particularly rubber gloves. Latex allergy is caused by skin contact, inhalation and exposure to blood stream and mucous membrane. Apart from Allergic and Irritant Contact Dermatitis, the most severe allergic reaction to latex is known as Latex Hypersensitivity, which is an immediate allergic reaction. Latex is frequently used in medical products so physicians should be careful with their use with people having latex allergies. Latex is used in the production of condoms as well.
    Symptoms
Skin rash, scaling, dryness of the skin, itchiness, burning, skin lesions and skin irritation spreading to other body parts. Latex Hypersensitivity involves symptoms such as hives, cramps, conjunctivitis, severe itching and rarely tremors, chest pain, difficulty in breathing, rapid heartbeat and anaphylactic shock leading to death.
    Mold Allergy

Mold Allergy is an allergic reaction to molds which is a type of fungus commonly found indoors and in some food materials such as cheese, mushrooms, bread, canned juices and dried fruit. Molds play an important role in the food chain by breaking down dead organic material into nutrients.
    Symptoms
Skin rash, runny nose, itchy and watery eyes and wheezing.
    Pet Allergies

People can develop allergies by making contact with pets such as cats and dogs. The condition is particularly associated with cats. Pet allergies can be hereditary. Contrary to the popular belief, pet allergies are not caused by fur, but by dander, the dead skin flakes of the pets. Other factors causing pet allergies are pet saliva and urine. People who do not want to give up keeping pets to avoid allergies should minimize exposure to these allergens.
    Symptoms
Skin rash, wheezing, itchy eyes. Asymptomatic at times, especially in children.
    Plant Allergy

A number of plants can cause an allergic reaction on exposure. Plants can cause allergic reaction on touching them due to an oily sap in their trunk, stems, roots and leaves known as Urishiol. The allergic reaction from plants can lead to the condition known as Allergic Contact Dermatitis. Some of the common plants that cause allergy include Poison Ivy, Sumac and Oak.
    Symptoms
Skin rash in patches on the area of exposure, skin rash developing into blisters or red bumps known as papules, skin redness and skin itchiness.
    Pollen or Spring Allergy

    http://www.coolhealthtips.com/learn-about-different-types-of-allergies.html/spring-allergyImage by Adams999

    Source by : flickr
Spring allergies are caused by the dispersal of pollen or the reproductive spores of the plant in the wind for the purpose of wind pollination. The pollen is very small and can cause an allergic reaction by causing a condition known as Hay Fever or Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. You can avoid allergies during spring by ensuring minimum contact with the pollen laden wind and moving to a place with lower pollen count.
    Symptoms
Inflammation in the sinus cavities, nasal inflammation, nasal congestion, post nasal drip, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy throat, nose and eyes.
    Salicylate Allergy or Aspirin Allergy

Salicylate is a naturally occurring group of chemicals extracted from plants and can trigger allergic reactions in some people. Salicylates are used in aspirin and several food and cosmetic products, broadening the range of effect. It is also known as Aspirin allergy.
    Symptoms
Headache, nasal congestion, skin rash, hives, itchiness, skin color change, swelling of hands and feet, swelling of the face, stomach pain and symptoms similar to asthma such as wheezing and difficulty in breathing.
    Sun Allergy or Photosensitivity

Exposure to sunlight can trigger an allergic reaction to some people due to the ultraviolet light. The condition can even lead to skin cancer in some cases. People with fair skin and light colored hair have a greater risk of developing a sun allergy.
    Symptoms
Skin rash, sunburns, change in skin texture.
    Risk Factors of Allergies

    Heredity

Allergies usually run in families. If both the parents of a patient suffer from allergies, then the victim has a risk of the development of an allergy by no less than 60%. However, that risk is reduced to half if only one parent is suffering from an allergy. People with no family history of allergies only have the probability of 15% of developing an allergy.
    Age

Age is an important factor, though the development of an allergy can occur at almost any point of time in a person’s life. Children are at an increased risk of developing allergies early in their lives. The younger a person is at the time of the exposure to the allergenic stimulus, the greater the likelihood of the development of an allergy.
    Exposure

People with increased exposure to certain allergens such as living in a dusty environment could be more likely to develop an allergy. However, allergens are considered harmless in themselves for those who do not contract allergies.
Complication and Conditions Triggered by Allergies

The particular conditions and complications triggered by an allergy depends on the particular type.
However, the following are the most important ones.
    Conditions

    • Allergic Rhinitis or Hay Fever
    • Asthma
    • Sinusitis
    • Hives or Urticaria
    • Allergic Contact Dermatitis
    • Irritant Contact Dermatitis
    • Immediate Allergic Reaction
    • Allergic Shock
    • Anaphylaxis (rare)
    Allergies Diagnosis

    Skin Testing

The most common and effective way of diagnosing a particular allergy is skin testing. The prick-puncture method is the most widely used method because of its low risk and accurate results. A small portion of the skin, usually on the arm, is exposed to the suspected allergen and a prick is made to check the reaction. If an allergic reaction appears, the allergy from a particular allergen is confirmed.
    Blood Test for Allergy Antibodies

People with allergies have the IgE immunoglobin antibodies in their blood stream as the body triggers it as a defensive reaction. People who cannot undergo skin testing for some reason are required to take this blood test to confirm the allergy.
    Allergies Treatments

The treatment of an allergy varies with the condition but is largely concentrated at curbing the symptoms.
    Medicine

Anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine drugs are administered to reduce the allergic reactions. Decongestant sprays are also frequently used for the treatment. Topical medicine is also applied in some cases to relieve skin irritation.
    Immunotherapy

Allergen injections are administered to desensitize the immune system of the body from the allergic reaction on exposure to it.
    Lifestyle Changes

Remember, the most effective way of treatment of an allergy is avoiding contact with the allergen.

    What Is Dry Eye?

    What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a general term used to describe a group of conditions that result from a dry cornea. Dry eye normally manifests as dry, irritated eyes. It can occur as a result of the normal aging process, medications, exposure to air pollution or other environmental factors, or in conjunction with other diseases. People who wear contact lenses are also more likely to experience dry eye.
What Are the Symptoms of Dry Eye?

Eye redness is a key sign of dry eye. Other symptoms include itchiness or grittiness, burning or stinging in the eye or sensitivity to light. It feels like there’s something in the eye causing general discomfort or a feeling of dryness.

People with dry eye commonly remark that their eyes tire easily, making it difficult for them to read or watch television. A clear reason for this difficulty is that the frequency of blinking typically decreases during activities that require concentration. As you blink less, there is more time for the tear film to evaporate which causes dryness.

Contact lens intolerance can also be a symptom of dry eye. Often, a person with mild to moderate dry eye may not experience symptoms until contact lenses are fitted. The placement of a contact lens can upset the delicate balance of tear film production and distribution, leading to lens intolerance.

    Who Does Dry Eye Affect?
While outdoor pollutants are common causes of dry eye, symptoms may also develop in response to indoor environmental quality. Symptoms are most likely to occur when the air’s humidity drops, which commonly occurs in centrally heated or air-conditioned rooms and on airplanes. Dry eye symptoms are also relatively common among workers whose jobs involve looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time. People working at computers don’t blink as often as they would if they were changing focus more often.

    How to Avoid Dry Eye

As obvious as it may sound, blink more often. Take breaks between activities that require intense eye focus such as reading or working on the computer. Other tips to prevent the onset or progression of dry eye include:

    • Monitor the humidity indoors – Consider adding a humidifier if the air feels dry.
    • Avoid heavily polluted areas whenever possible.
    • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated.
    • Don’t smoke – Smoking increases the likelihood that you will suffer from dry eye symptoms
All the above is for information purpose, For any of the above symptoms
Please consult your opthamologist for further Treatment.

Bottled Water Toxic for you and the Planet

There is no life without water. Water makes up more than two thirds of human body weight; therefore drinking water should always be clean and free of contaminants to ensure proper health.
There are more than 3,000 brands of mineral water commercially available worldwide. Most of the mineral water bottle manufacturers are not processing and bottling water according to the standards set up by the World Health Organization and the International Bottling Water Association.
The bottled water sales have increased over the past several years. Bottled water must not contain any chemical additives and must be calorie-free and sugar free. According to the study bottle water is just as polluted as a tap water.

    Source : flickr

There are some surprising secrets about your favorite bottled water. So think before you buy them.

    1. It tastes like a tap water

In many taste tests tape water often comes close to or surpasses bottled water in taste. According to researchers’ people prefer water with medium mineralization, whether it came from a bottle or the tape. In a recent research study people were asked to rate several types of bottled and tape water. The findings indicate that people cannot correctly identify bottled water on the basis of its taste.
    2. Bottled water is not always pure

Bottled water isn’t necessarily pure. The environmental advocacy group Natural Resources Defense council tested 103 brands of bottled water and found that one third of the tested brands contained bacteria or other chemicals.
In 2011, California State university researchers found during a test that bottled water of some brands contain high levels of heterotrophic-plate-count bacteria, Coliform and Arsenic. These chemicals can harm your body.
    3. It may be a tape water

About 25 percent of all bottled water comes from municipal water sources. Some famous brands, for example, Coca-Cola’s Dasani and Pepsi’s Aquafina are nothing but purified tap water with added minerals. Make sure that the water you drink contain more than 250 ppm (parts per million) of TDS (total dissolved solids).
    4. Plastic is a huge problem for the environment

University of Louisville researchers estimate that 17 billion barrels of oil is wasted to produce PET (polyethylene Terephthalate) water bottles. 1.5 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water every year.
These plastic bottles are becoming a major environmental hazard. A lot of energy is required to make plastic and the bottles also have to be transported which produce more harmful emissions.
To keep the environments clean always use a reusable and washable bottle.

Most of us are familiar with the term ‘allergy’, and use it quite frequently. By definition, an allergy is an abnormal response of the immune system if the human body to an allergen (an agent that can trigger allergy). Allergies in children are quite common in today’s context. Many children attending pediatric clinics today do so for allergy-related complaints.

An allergy can crop up at any age and can continue for months or years until the child outgrows it, or till the allergen is discovered and eliminated from the child’s environment. Allergies are usually a result of both genetic susceptibility and environmental stimulation.

    Types of Allergies in children:

Allergies in children can involve any or all of three or four systems:

1)The nose, throat and chest (respiratory allergies)
    2)The skin ( cutaneous allergy)
3)The stomach and intestines ( gastrointestinal allergies or food allergies)
    4)The eyes (ocular allergy)

Allergic symptoms depend on the system involved.
    Respiratory Allergies:

These manifest with a blocked or a runny itchy nose, sneezing, hoarseness of voice, cough and wheezing or breathlessness. Asthma too is often allergic in origin.

    Skin Allergies:

These manifest with redness of skin, itching, rash, redness, scaling or peeing of skin and burning. The resultant itching often reddens the skin and can lead to a loss of skin and secondary infection.

    Stomach and Intestinal Allergies:

These manifests with nausea, vomiting, burping, bloating, pain in the abdomen, passing of gas and loose motions – not infrequently with mucus and blood.

    Eye Allergies:

    allergy2.jpg
These causes redness of eyes, pain, irritation, itchiness and discharge.

    CAUSES:

When external agents or allergens come in contact with the child and its immune system, they cause exaggerated responses called allergies. The list of allergens is literally endless, but children are commonly allergic to:

    • Dust
    • Mites
    • Pollen
    • Molds
    • Medications
    • Skin cream and powders
    • Drugs like penicillin and sulphas
    • Food items like seafood, nuts, milk (especially cow’s milk), food colors and preservatives.
    • Smoke – especially cigarette smoke
    • Insect and insect bites
    • Suspended particles in the atmosphere, etc.

    Basic Mechanism:

    allergy3.jpg
When the immune system first comes in contact with the potential allergen, it gets sensitized to them. In other words, one may not identify many allergies on the first exposure. Subsequently, however, the immune system is primed and ready. When it encounters the allergen again, it kicks off a series of chemical reactions in the body. These include release of substances like histamine, serotonin, and prostaglandins etc, which then produce symptoms of allergy.

Lately, medical research has implicated two more factors in the development of allergies, namely:

    a)Repeated stress
b)Early introduction of solids to infants, especially before age of six months.

    Diagnosis:

Allergies are usually easy to diagnose with medical monitoring of the child’s various symptoms. Isolating the cause of the allergy (identification of the allergen) is far more difficult. The list of potential culprits is endless and almost anything in the atmosphere can be an allergen to a child. That is why doctors often advise parents to ‘play detective’ – to figure out if the child gets allergic symptoms under specific of circumstances.

This involves looking for the same allergic symptoms after the child eats a particular food, plays in the garden, gets bitten by a bug, is in a particular room or reacts most in a particular season.

Nevertheless many an allergen eludes diagnosis. In such a case, the physician may have to resort to allergy testing – either by repeatedly subjecting the child to different known allergens or by doing expensive blood tests. These processes can obviously be quite unpleasant but are necessary.

    Treatment:

    foodallergy.jpg
Treatment of all allergies rests on identifying the allergen and removing it or in removing the child from the allergy-causing circumstances. General measure like keeping the house, pets and upholstery clean and monitoring the ingredients of all food items that the child consumes often help reduce allergic symptoms.

Specific treatment includes administering anti-allergic medication, which reduce the amount of chemicals that the body secrets. These, popularly called antihistamines are often used to control acute allergies. Their use is justified when the allergic symptoms are extremely distressing both to the child and to the parent. However, these medicines have their own side effects such as drowsiness and dryness of mouth.

Severe cases may call for allergy desensitizing in which the doctor administers to or injects the child with an allergen in slowly increasing doses. The intended effect is to get the child’s immune system to get used to the agent and therefore stop reacting.

Apart from allopathic medicines, many turn to homeopathy or Ayurveda for the treatment of a child’s allergies.

    Omega 3 Fatty Acid

    the+report+announced+that+taking+fish+oil+which+is+loaded+with+omega+3+fatty+acids+may+lower+reaction+times+and+prevent+feelings+of+fatigue+or+exhaust_1960_800633496_0_0_14036926_300.jpg

Omega 3′s are essential fatty acid molecules that make and repair the body’s cells and organs. They can raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) to help unclog veins and arteries. Omega-6 is a pro-inflammatory fatty acid and Omega-3 is an anti-inflammatory fatty acid. Our modern society consumes excessive amounts of foods loaded with harmful Omega-6 oils. Our diets are highly deficient in Omega-3 foods, and Omega-3supplementation has become a necessity. Omega-3 supplements are one of the basics now recommended by doctors for heart health, improved metabolism, and brain function.

    Here are some Health Benefits
Clinical studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may be helpful in treating a variety of health conditions like:
High cholesterol: One who consume high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids tend to have increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol and decreased triglycerides.
High blood pressure: Research suggests that diets or supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids lower blood pressure significantly in individuals with hypertension.
Heart disease: One of the best ways to help prevent and treat heart disease is to eat a low-fat diet and to replace foods rich in saturated and trans-fat with those that are rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (including omega-3 fatty acids). Omega-3fatty acid intake (primarily from fish) helps protect against stroke caused by plaque buildup and blood clots in the arteries that lead to the brain.
Diabetes: Individuals with diabetes tend to have high triglyceride and low HDL levels.Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can help lower triglycerides and lipoproteins (markers of diabetes), and raise HDL, so people with diabetes benefit from eating food rich in Omega 3 fatty acid.
Arthritis: Omega-3 fatty acid supplements reduce tenderness in joints, decrease morning stiffness, and allow for a reduction in the amount of medication needed for people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoporosis: Omega-3 fatty acids help increase levels of calcium in the body, deposit calcium in the bones, and improve bone strength.
Depression: People who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids or do not maintain a healthy balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in their diet may be at an increased risk for depression. The omega-3 fatty acids are important components of nerve cell membranes. They help nerve cells communicate with each other, which is an essential step in maintaining good mental health.
Burns: Essential fatty acids have been used to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing in burn victims.
Asthma: Clinical research suggests that omega-3 fatty acid supplements (in the form of perilla seed oil) may decrease inflammation and improve lung function in adults with asthma.
Colon cancer: Consuming significant amounts of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids appears to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
Clinical studies have reported that low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the body are a marker for an increased risk of colon cancer.
Breast cancer: Although not all experts agree, women who regularly consume foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids over many years may be less likely to develop breast cancer.
Prostate cancer: Like breast cancer, the balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids appears to be particularly important for reducing the risk of this condition too.
What are the Sources? You can discover omega-3 fatty acids in the following sources:

    • Flaxseed and Flaxseed oil
    • Fish oil and cod liver or similar oil supplements
    • Fruit juices and bread or other fortified foods (Kiwifruit, strawberries and Black Raspberry are very good sources in fruits)
    • Sunflower seeds
    • Salmon, Sardines, Tuna and Mackerel or other types of oily fishes
    • Spinach
    • Walnuts

    Good Oral Hygiene

    Oral+Hygeine.JPG
    Good Oral Hygiene

    What is Good Oral Hygiene?
Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy.
    This means:

    • Your teeth are clean and free of debris

    • Gums are firmly held against teeth and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss

    • Bad breath is not a constant problem
If your gums do hurt or bleed while brushing or flossing, or you are experiencing persistent bad breath, see your dentist. Any of these conditions may indicate a problem.Your dental professional can help you learn good oral hygiene techniques and can help point out areas of your mouth that may require extra attention during brushing and flossing.

How Is Good Oral Hygiene Practiced?
Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being.
Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.
In between regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps that each of us can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems.
    These include:

    • Brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing daily

    • Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals

    • Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste

    • Rinsing with a fluoride mouthrinse if your dentist tells you to

    • Making sure that children under 12 drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride supplement if they live in a non-fluoridated area.
    Proper Brushing Technique

    • Tilt the brush at a 45 degree angle against the gumline and sweep or roll the brush away from the gumline.

    • Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes.

    • Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath.
    Proper Flossing Technique

    • Use about 18″ of floss, leaving an inch or two to work with.

    • Gently follow the curves of your teeth.

    • Be sure to clean beneath the gumline, but avoid snapping the floss on the gums.
