Vietnam 1-7 Arsenal: Giroud grabs first-half hat-trick in friendly rout

    296856hp2.jpg

Olivier Giroud bagged a first-half hat-trick as Arsenal continued their pre-season tour of Asia with a 7-1 annihilation of Vietnam in Hanoi.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chuba Akpom and Ignasi Miquel also found the net against the international minnows, while Jack Wilshere made his first appearance of the season from the bench.

Arsene Wenger made five changes to the side which demolished the Indonesia XI on Sunday, with Bacary Sagna filling in at centre-back and Lukas Podolski and Giroud up front.

And inside five minutes they took the lead, with Tomas Rosicky dinking the ball cleverly in behind for Giroud, who smashed the ball low into the bottom corner.

Despite their obvious superiority, the Gunners looked lethargic and even a little jaded at times, and only Vietnam’s lack of attacking quality prevented them encountering more problems.

But in attack Arsene Wenger’s men were creating chances at will, and on 19 minutes Podolski headed over when found by Serge Gnabry’s inviting cross.

Nine minutes later the lively Gnabry’s incisive pass put Podolski clean through, but after dodging past two challenges, Giroud failed to read the German’s pass and the chance went begging.

Five minutes before the break Podolski went even closer, lashing against the post from the edge of the area, with Gnabry seeing his low first-time rebound beaten away.

Arsenal were playing well within themselves against the side languishing in 145th in the Fifa rankings, but two goals in three minutes before half-time put them firmly in control.

On 44 minutes Giroud capitalised on a poor defensive clearance to curl the ball superbly into the corner, and two minutes later he raced onto Oxlade-Chamberlain’s slide-rule pass to dink in.

Having completed his hat-trick the Frenchman was withdrawn at the break, but Arsenal showed no mercy in the second half.

It took barely a minute for substitute Theo Walcott to surge forward down the right and square the ball for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who curled the ball first time into the top corner.

Only 10 minutes later the Gunners were at it again – this time Aaron Ramsey dinked the ball through for Akpom, and Giroud’s replacement slotted calmly into the bottom corner.

Just before the hour mark the youngster had his second, tapping into an empty net after Oxlade-Chamberlain had strolled through a non-existent Vietnamese defence and squared the ball.

On 66 minutes Wilshere replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain, and eight minutes later the Gunners grabbed their seventh, as Miquel swept home after a neat exchange of passes with Ramsey in the penalty area.

Some 12 minutes from time Vietnam got themselves an unlikely consolation, as substitute Tran Manh Dung finished off a flowing counterattack with a slightly scuffed finish which looped into the net.

At the other end, substitute goalkeeper Tran Buu Ngoc saw red for handling outside his area late on, and Arsenal comfortably saw out the win.

    Wenger pleased with Vietnam workout

    296860_heroa.jpg

The Frenchman is happy with his side's continued preparations ahead of the new Premier League season following their emphatic 7-1 win in difficult conditions on Wednesday Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is pleased with his side's workout during their 7-1 annihilation of Vietnam in Hanoi on Wednesday.

Olivier Giroud bagged a first-half hat-trick against the international side, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chuba Akpom and Ignasi Miquel found the net, as the Gunners continued their preparations for the new Premier League campaign.

Wenger's side now have 14 goals from two friendly victories during their tour of Asia and the Frenchman is happy with his side's development, especially due to the difficult and humid conditions.

"It was a game played with good pace and a good spirit. For us, of course, it was a good preparation for the season," Wenger told the club's official website.
"Vietnam started very quick, very strong, and the first minutes were for them but, after that, on our first chance we scored and we scored some great goals.

"We learned first of all to play at a high pace, because it was a pacy game. We learned to suffer physically because we had two hard sessions yesterday and we practised today. The conditions, the climate, are difficult for us so we had to learn to suffer a little bit and keep our concentration to keep the level of our game high."

Vietnam found a consolation goal 12 minutes from time through Tran Manh Dung's mistimed volley and Wenger admitted that he was pleased to see the home fans celebrate something.

"Overall they have the basic quality and it was great to see the enthusiasm and the happiness when they scored the goal," he added. "It was one of the few times in my life that I enjoyed when an opponent scored.

"It was such a great moment in the stadium and the enthusiasm of the crowd was so big that of course they deserve to be happy.

"We will certainly try to come back because we had such a positive experience but I am not the only one to decide on that. Vietnam must want us back as well."

Qatar World Cup should be held in winter, insists Blatter

    293962_heroa.jpg

The Fifa president says the heat in the country would be unbearable and believes that holding the competition in winter would only disrupt one European season
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has insisted that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar should be held during the winter period for European nations.

The Middle Eastern nation were controversially awarded the tournament back in 2010, despite fears over the country's soaring temperatures.

And the Swiss official has insisted that the competition cannot be held during June and July.

"The World Cup in Qatar can only take place in the winter. And the executive committee is sure to follow me," he told Sky Sport Germany.

"In this heat, you cannot play in the summer. And we have to consider the players. I was just in the Middle East, in Jordan, Palestine and Israel.

"I have felt the heat in these countries and it's not as hot there as it is in Qatar. It's possible to air condition a stadium, but not an entire country.

"That's why we need to be brave in the Executive Committee to create awareness among the leagues that we need to change something."

Many people have voiced fears over the effect a winter World Cup could have on domestic football's scheduling, but Blatter insists that the change would only be temporary.

"Yes, but it's only a year, then they can go back to normal rhythm again," he added.

Manchester United chief executive Ed Woodward leaves tour

    EdWoodwardManchesterUnitedchiefexecutive_2974264.jpg

Chief executive Ed Woodward has left Manchester United's tour of Australia early to carry out urgent transfer business - with Sky Sports understanding the deal involves a player arriving at Old Trafford.

Although it is unclear what deal Woodward is working on, he apparently told United officials of his immediate departure whilst they were at the State of Origin Rugby League match at ANZ Stadium.Woodward was not at the game and is expected to return to Europe at some point on Thursday.

United have been linked with Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and have already had one bid turned down by the Spanish champions.Everton duo Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini have also been strongly tipped to join their former boss David Moyes at United - with the Merseysiders already rebuffing one offer for Baines.

Woodward's sudden decision to return to Britain comes as speculation continues over the future of unsettled striker Wayne Rooney, with United rejecting an approach from Premier League rivals Chelsea in the past 24 hours. He was due to return home on Sunday and his decision to cut short his trip to the Far East indicates the urgency of the situation requiring his attention.

    Competition

United could face competition for Fabregas' signature from three Premier League rivals, with their opening bid of £25million, communicated to Barcelona on Monday, sharpening interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

For his part, Fabregas has repeatedly said he is happy in Catalonia, and that stance was reiterated by Barca boss Tito Vilanova on Tuesday as he said: "It's normal to receive offers for our players from other teams. We have very good players, and we have to be very happy to have Cesc with us."I am conscious that he has received offers for other teams, but I had a conversation with him and he let me know that we wanted to stay here, and his dream is to be successful here.

"So he is not thinking about any other club, not even for money or for minutes, even if he knows all the competition he has here with Xavi, Iniesta and also this year against Sergi and Roberto, but he told me that his dream is to be here. I'm not worried at all."Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea, meanwhile, would welcome Fabregas at Old Trafford.

He told the Daily Mail: "He is a great player, very skilful, knows how to win things and you always want those type of players in your team."

Wayne Rooney is Chelsea's only transfer target this summer

    soc_g_roon_cr_576.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that the club have made a bid for unsettled Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney. But Mourinho denied that any Chelsea players were offered to United in part-exchange for Rooney and stressed that his club had made the offer in the correct manner.

Chelsea lodged a written bid for the England international on Tuesday, which has been rejected, and reports surfaced on Wednesday suggesting the bid was £10m plus Juan Mata or David Luiz. But Mourinho reiterated Chelsea's earlier denial that any players were involved in their offer when he said: "Chelsea is interested in this player, made a bid, and what we did, we did officially.

"The bid is there. The club knows we want the player, the player has to know we made a bid for him.

Running fan an Arsenal inspiration, says Wenger

    296931_heroa.jpg

Vietnamese fan Vu Xuan Tien has become an internet sensation after chasing the team bus for miles and the Frenchman has been blown away by the side's support
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed his players are taking inspiration from local Vietnamese fan Vu Xuan Tien.

The Gunners supporter became an internet sensation after he ran alongside the team coach for several miles before being invited on board to meet the players and staff.

And Wenger, who saw his side put seven goals against the Vietnamese national team on Wednesday, says the local fan is proving to be an inspiration to his players in tough training sessions.

"He kept running when all the others stopped and he refused to give up," Wenger told The Daily Mirror.

"The players were calling out to him, ‘Hello, how are you?’ Because he refused to stop, we invited him on to our coach. And today he is a star all over Vietnam."

The 63-year-old has been encouraged by his side's pre-season preparations, and, after being blown away by the club's support in Vietnam, hopes to return to the country in the future.

"We learned to play at a high pace and we learned to suffer physically, which is what we needed to do," added Wenger.

"We had hard sessions on Tuesday, and the climate is very difficult for us. So we suffered physically, but we kept our concentration high.

"When Vietnam scored, it was one of the few times in my life that I enjoyed it when our opponents scored.

"It was such a great moment in the stadium and they deserved to be happy.

"We’ll try to come back here because it has been such a positive experience. But the decision is not only down to me. Vietnam must want us to come back too."

Papastathopoulos warning for Subotic & Hummels

    229747_heroa.jpg

The centre-half, who spent most of his AC Milan career as a reserve, is determined to break into Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up as quickly as possible
Sokratis Papastathopoulos has warned his Borussia Dortmund team-mates Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels that he has no intention of spending the season sitting on the bench.

The Greece international has just arrived at Signal Iduna Park from Werder Bremen and says that he plans to break into the Schwarzgelben line-up right away, explaining that he wants to avoid a repeat of the situation he found himself in at former club AC Milan, when he was restricted to just five league appearances for the Rossoneri."I came here to play, like every other player," Papastathopoulos told reporters. "It's normal.

"I left AC Milan because I wasn't playing, then I moved to Bremen where I played a lot and now I'm here to play. I believe every player joining a team wants to play.
"Things with the other players are going well. I'll play where the coach needs me, if he wants me to play right back or as a centre-back I'll do it."

Dortmund paid a reported €9.5 million to sign Papastathopoulos, 25, who penned a five-year deal with the Champions League runners-up.

    Malouda moves to Trabzonspor

    296694_heroa.jpg

The France international passed a medical with the Turkish outfit on Wednesday before putting pen to paper on a two-year contract
Trabzonspor have completed the signing of Florent Malouda on a free transfer after the midfielder left Chelsea.

The France international was frozen out of the Blues first-team squad last season, after electing to see out the final year of his contract with the club rather than accept a wage cut to move elsewhere.

Malouda had been linked with a return to France with Marseille, as well as Serie A outfit Napoli, but he has instead penned a two-year contract with Trabzonspor.
The versatile winger scored 45 goals in 220 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, following his arrival from Lyon in the summer of 2007.

The 33-year-old lifted one Premier League title, three FA Cups and a Champions League during his stay at Stamford Bridge.

Gomez: I would have played at Bayern

    294143_heroa.jpg

The Germany international insists that he was not in the least bit frightened by the competition for places at the Allianz Arena Mario Gomez is in no doubt that he would have reclaimed his starting berth at Bayern Munich had he stayed with the treble winners.

The Germany international lost his place in the Roten line-up to Mario Mandzukic last season and last week sealed a move to Fiorentina.

However, Gomez insists that his decision to leave the Allianz Arena was not motivated by a fear of being unable to force his way back into the Bayern first team.

"Three years ago I was Lous van Gaal's fourth-choice striker but I ended up as top scorer," the 28-year-old told Kicker.

"This season I would probably have been second-choice but I am convinced that I would have got my place back."

However, Gomez explained that he came to accept that his particular skill-set would not be ideally suited to the type of football Bayern are likely to play under new boss Pep Guardiola.

"The club has a different philosophy now, a new coach, who puts a lot of emphasis on small, agile players.

"So, sure, it's not easy to leave the best team in the world. But I was overwhelmed by the reception I received [at his unveiling at the Artemio Franchi].

"I came up the stairs to the field and then there was this purple wall. It was amazing. I had goosebumps. This is what every player wants.

"Many have said "you cannot go to Italy at the moment" but football gives us the opportunity to experience other cultures and like Italy as a country; the language is for me the best ever."

Gomez, who joined Bayern from Stuttgart in 2009, scored 75 times in 115 Bundesliga appearances for the Bavarians.

Tevez: Too much hype and pressure at Manchester City

    297010_heroa.jpg

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez says there was "way too much pressure" to succeed during his time at Manchester City.

The 29-year-old ended his stay at the Etihad Stadium this summer, joining Serie A champions Juventus in June for a fee of around €12 million.

City failed to progress out of the group stages of the Champions League in consecutive seasons and Tevez believes pressure played it's part.

"Yes, there was way too much pressure,” Tevez told CNN.

"It came from everyone - the club, the fans. I think that too much pressure just hurts the team.

"What happened was that there was so much hype and pressure to be one of the giants of Europe and we didn't do it.

"We dropped out in the first round of the Champions League on both occasions."

Tevez, who failed to register a goal in Europe last season, despite netting 11 times and assisting a further eight goals for City in the Premier League, moved to Turin on a three-year deal.

Fink: Guardiola did not invent footbal

    245282_heroa.jpg

Hamburg boss Thorsten Fink says Pep Guardiola "didn't invent football" and believes far too much pressure is being placed on the new Bayern Munich coach to succeed.

Great things are expected of the former Spain international, who is credited for the creation of one of the finest teams in history during his four-year spell in charge of Barcelona.

Fink has a lot of time for Guardiola but he feels that the sense of expectancy surrounding the 42-year-old's arrival in Bavaria is threatening to get out of hand.

"We often played against each other," the ex-Bayern midfielder told Bild. "And when I was a coach in Basel, we have met twice on the elite coaching course.

"But the hype around him is certainly not easy for him. Even Pep is only a man and did not invent football."

Fink will have the opportunity to pit his wits against Guardiola on Saturday when their respective sides face off in a friendly and the 45-year-old is looking forward to the challenge.

"We will not hide like a rabbit caught in the headlights and only play on the counterattack," he promised.

Fink won four Bundesliga titles and a Champions League during his time at Bayern as a player.

    PSG eye 'dream' Ronaldo signing

    295442_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has claimed that he could easily land his "dream signing" Cristiano Ronaldo on account of his "very good relationship" with Real Madrid counterpart Florentino Perez.

The Ligue 1 champions have been regularly linked with a move for the Portuguese superstar and the Qatari businessman insists that a deal is not beyond the realms of possibility.

"I know he has two years left on his contract with Real Madrid," Al-Khelaifi is quoted as saying by AS. "But I have a very good relationship with Florentino. If I want my dream of signing Cristiano to be met, I'll call [Perez]."

Meanwhile, PSG completed a reported €64 million deal for Edinson Cavani earlier this week, a move that immediately cast some doubt on the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, Al-Khelaifi insists that the Swede, who fired the capital club to the title last season, is not going anywhere.

"Ibra will stay here," he declared. "The project will continue with him, that's for sure."

Indeed, with Cavani and Ibrahimovic poised to form a formidable attacking duo, Al-Khelaifi feels that PSG are now even closer to their goal of landing the Champions League.

"They question our credibility, but we have signed Cavani," he reasoned. "Many clubs admired him. Our goal is to win the Champions League within four years."

PSG were eliminated by Barcelona on away goals in the quarter-finals of last season's Champions League.

Wenger warns Manchester United: Fabregas will stay at Barcelona for 'one more year

    269936_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he is not expecting to sign Cesc Fabregas this summer as the midfielder has elected to stay for "one more year" at Barcelona.

The Gunners insisted on a €29 million buy-back clause in the Spaniard's contract when they sold him to the Spanish champions two years ago.

But despite Manchester United trying to force the issue with an opening bid of €30m on Monday, the Frenchman believes he will not need to make an offer to prevent his former captain moving to Old Trafford.

Goal reported at the end of June that Wenger has been in regular contact with his former captain this summer, and he now claims to know the latest about the Spaniard's future.

"At the moment, Fabregas has decided to stay one more year at Barcelona," Wenger told the press.

"We have the clause in the contract so we would be on alert but, at the moment, that’s not something we're after."

The former Arsenal captain has struggled to make himself a first-team regular since returning to his boyhood club in 2011 but the sale of youngster Thiago to Bayern Munich is set to free up more space in Tito Vilanova's midfield.

Indeed, the current Barcelona boss insisted earlier this week that the 26-year-old was keen to stay and fight for his place.

He said: "I am aware that we have received offers from other teams. I talked with him and he told me he wants to stay.

"Cesc doesn't contemplate the possibility of going to another club. He knows that the competition here is great. His dream is to succeed here."

Robert Lewandowski says he is "astonished" at how he has been treated at Borussia Dortmund.

Lewandowski, 24, believes he had been given assurances that he would be able to exit BVB in this transfer window, with Bayern Munich a likely destination.

But he is adamant the club have reneged on a deal which would have seen the Poland international leave Signal Iduna Park this summer.

"In the second half of the season, I gave everything for Dortmund, as always. I played and scored, knowing that I would be allowed to leave," Lewandowski told Bild Sport.

"I was certain I would be given the green light for a transfer.

"Now all of the sudden everything is different. Unfortunately, I'm forced to stay. I'm astonished at how they're treating me.

"I have to accept that I have to stay in Dortmund."

Lewandowski is set to remain at Signal Iduna Park and run down the rest of his contract which ends in June 2014.

The former Lech Poznan striker started life slowly at Westfalenstadion, but over the past two seasons has emerged as one of Europe’s leading attackers, epitomised by the four goals he scored in a memorable night against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.

The Pole has scored 75 goals in 136 appearances for last season’s Champions League runners-up.

No offers for Soldado, says Valencia chief

Valencia have received no offers for striker Roberto Soldado, according to the club's president Amadeo Salvo.

Soldado, 28, has been linked with a move to the Premier League but along with other potential targets such as Adil Rami and Diego Alves, los Che's chief has insisted their transfers will come at a cost.

“Valencia will stand firm and we have not received any offers for Roberto Soldado,” Salvo told reporters.

“There will always be players who are linked with a possible exit and when Valencia, who own the players’ rights, decide they will leave then we will not be letting them go for nothing.”

Salvo was also quick to stress his side will be under more pressure to be financially prudent in the coming months.

He added: “The fans are aware we won’t be playing in the Champions League next season and that we have an economic model to follow, so that conditions what we do, but we have to accept their will sometimes be criticism.”

This was evident when los Che lost out on the signing of Giovani dos Santos to rivals Villarreal, Salvo now says his side had no interest in the Mexico international.

He said: “Valencia were not interested in Gio. Therefore, there never was an option for him to play here.”
