Inter 3-2 Trapani: Mazzarri's men nearly stunned by minnows

    347185hp2.jpg

Inter have booked a date against Udinese in the fifth round of the Coppa Italia after a nervy 3-2 win against Trapani at San Siro on Wednesday.

The Nerrazzurri were 3-0 up by the break, but nearly threw away that advantage against the Sicilians, who scored twice in the second half but ultimately ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Richard Marcone’s own goal sent the hosts into the lead after four minutes, with the defender turning into his own net from Fredy Guarin’s free kick that ricocheted off the post.

Ishak Belfodil added a second for Inter with a neat volley, before Saphir Taider made it three with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Trapani were a different side after the restart though, and gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Andrea Ranocchia’s mistake allowed Cristian Caccetta to slide home shortly before the hour mark.

And after a second half of concerted pressure, Giuseppe Madonia set up a grandstand finish by beating Juan Pablo Carrizo in the final minute of normal time.
The fightback was nearly completed at the death, but Maurizio Ciaramitaro was unable to profit from a Carrizo error, allowing Inter to hold on to face Udinese on January 14.

Walter Mazzarri was clearly unhappy with the home side’s lack of focus in the second half that nearly allowed the visitors back into the game.

“Such carelessness should not happen. At half-time, I told the team to handle the situation, but when you lose attention, that's what happens,” he lamented to La Gazzetta dello Sport.“I wanted to make the boys begin to grow as a group, and this seemed like the right time, but you can’t underestimate anything. In the first half, we were focused and did well, then we dropped. These are the points on which to work."

Belfodil’s goal appeared to do little to convince Mazzarri of giving him a more regular place in the first team, as the 52-year-old appeared willing to let the summer signing from Parma leave San Siro on a temporary basis.

Mazzarri added: “He [Belfodil] will decide what he wants to do in January, but he will listen to the feedback of the club."

Inter sit in fourth place in Serie A, 10 points behind leaders Juventus, but only three behind Napoli in the third and final Champions League place.

West Brom 2-3 Manchester City: Pellegrini's men survive late scare

    347212hp2.jpg

Manchester City survived a late scare to beat West Brom 3-2 in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Manuel Pellegrini's team made it seven wins from as many league matches at the Etihad Stadium against Swansea on Sunday but they arrived at the Hawthorns with one win and four defeats in six attempts outside Manchester.

Sergio Aguero's 17th goal in as many starts this term and Yaya Toure's eighth of the season made light of those struggles and City should have had more than those two wonderfully crafted team efforts to show for a dominant opening 45 minutes.

Toure sealed the victory with a 73rd-minute penalty - but West Brom rallied late on through Costel Pantilimon's own goal and Victor Anichebe's injury-time strike.

City, however, held on to retain their position in third on a night when the Premier League's top five were all victorious.

Influential captain Vincent Kompany returned from two months on the sidelines with a thigh injury to start for the visitors as both teams made three changes to their weekend line-ups.

Edin Dzeko, scorer of all three City goals in two wins over West Brom last season, was recalled and found himself instantly involved - chesting down Toure's pass for Aguero to fire wastefully wide.

But Aguero soon atoned for his error, emphatically converting Pablo Zabaleta's cutback to cap a superb ninth-minute team move.

West Brom sought an instant response and low drives from Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino - fresh from signing a new contract during the week - flew wide.

Aguero then linked seamlessly with Dzeko once more to crash a shot of his own into the advertising boards.

But City doubled their advantage in the 24th minute with another scintillating passing move.

Aguero and Samir Nasri combined for Aleksandar Kolarov to drill a low cross from which Toure opened his body to nonchalantly side-foot a goal fit to mark his 150th appearance for the club.

And Ivorian Toure then made it three from the spot after the break.

Dzeko was frustrated with his strike partner when Aguero chose to shoot from an acute angle and Boaz Myhill tipped wide, before Fernandinho volleyed wildly over.

And West Brom striker Shane Long was, too, frustrated when his penalty claims went unanswered with Kompany and Kolarov in close attendance five minutes into the second half.

Steve Clarke's men displayed renewed purpose throughout the second period and, after Claudio Yacob had clipped Kolarov in the area for Toure to convert, they mounted a belated comeback.

Substitute Matej Vydra got to the byline and Kolarov's miscued clearance struck his own goalkeeper Pantilimon and nestled in the net.

Fellow replacement Anichebe then outmuscled Martin Demichelis and drilled beyond the Romanian from the edge of the area for his first Albion goal, though City had already done enough to claim all three points.

Evian 2-0 Paris Saint-Germain: Blanc's men suffer shock defeat

    347179hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain were unable to equal their club-record run of 27 Ligue 1 matches unbeaten after losing 2-0 at Evian on Wednesday.

The last time the defending champions avoided defeat for so long was during the title-winning season of 1993-94, while PSG came into this encounter without a defeat in 90 minutes in 36 matches in all competitions.

Both sides missed several chances in the first half and it remained goalless until the 75th minute when substitute Clarck N'Sikulu hit a controlled shot into the bottom corner.

Javier Pastore went close to levelling with three minutes left, but goalkeeper Jesper Hansen made the save before Modou Sougou completed a famous home win.

PSG pressed with intent in the final 10 minutes, but poor distribution coupled with Evian's determined defending ensured the hosts took all three points.

Evian coach Pascal Dupraz named one change from the weekend defeat to Bastia as Djakaridja Kone replaced Aldo Angoula, while Laurent Blanc made six alterations from PSG's 4-0 win over Lyon, with young duo Lucas Digne and Adrien Rabiot returning.

The home side had a great chance to take the lead in the ninth minute as Sougou released Brice Dja Djedje into the area on the counterattack, but the full-back blazed over from an acute angle.

Less than two minutes later, Edinson Cavani should have scored as he got on the end of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's chipped cross, but the unmarked Uruguayan headed over.

Ibrahimovic was lucky to stay out of trouble in the 30th minute as his studs collided with the head of Jonathan Mensah and he was in the thick of the action a few moments later, but Jeremy Menez failed to bundle his low cross over the line.

The last chance of the half also fell to Menez, but after getting on to Cavani's pin-point delivery, the France international volleyed just over crossbar.

For the 20 minutes that followed half-time, Blanc's men were forced to contend with set-pieces, yet they were generally ineffective as Hansen was given few saves to make.

Salvatore Sirigu, Hansen's opposite number, was not so fortunate at the other end, however.

Sougou chased down a long ball and a ricochet saw it drop to the edge of the area for N'Sikulu, who caressed a shot into the bottom corner of the net four minutes after coming on.

Pastore should have equalised in the 87th minute as he headed Ibrahimovic's cross at Hansen and Evian went down the other end to double their lead as Sougou skipped past a challenge and swept a shot past Sirigu.

Fulham 1-2 Tottenham: Late Holtby strike ruins Meulensteen debut

    347163hp2.jpg

Lewis Holtby's late goal condemned Fulham to a sixth consecutive defeat in Rene Meulensteen's first match since succeeding Martin Jol.

Having taken over first-team affairs from Jol on Sunday, Meulensteen saw his side turn in an organised display but they were unable to avoid a loss which leaves them deep in the relegation mire.

Ashkan Dejagah's first Fulham goal looked to have secured them a win but Vlad Chiriches' long-range strike after 73 minutes brought the visitors level.

Substitute Holtby wrapped up the points eight minutes from time with a superb strike from outside the area to end Andre Villas-Boas' side's four-game winless run in the top flight.

Meulensteen made seven changes from Saturday's defeat against West Ham, with Dimitar Berbatov returning from illness.

However, captain Brede Hangeland missed out with a back problem, while there was no place in the squad for Darren Bent.

Villas-Boas made three changes from the Spurs side that drew against Manchester United at White Hart Lane, with Etienne Capoue making his first Premier League start since suffering an ankle injury against Arsenal in September.

Erik Lamela and Jermain Defoe were also brought in, with Nacer Chadli, Roberto Soldado on the bench and Mousa Dembele missing out altogether.

Defoe was the first to threaten for the visitors, stinging the palms of Maarten Stekelenburg with a fierce shot after four minutes, before Berbatov's heavy touch put paid to him getting an effort in on goal after a slipped ball from Alexander Kacaniklic.

Berbatov again threatened after 23 minutes, swivelling and firing an effort low to Hugo Lloris' left, with the France international producing a smart save in his 50th Tottenham appearance.

Paulinho weaved through a number of Fulham defenders and should have done better with his finish, firing over the bar from a central position inside the area after good work from Defoe.

Defoe was again the creator after half an hour, laying a ball infield for Lamela who curled just wide of the post.

Pajtim Kasami did well to block Sandro's powerful strike inside the area seven minutes into the second half and they were made to pay when Dejagah fired past Lloris.

After a lofted ball from Berbatov, the Iranian managed to get the ball under control before finishing well.

The visitors piled on the pressure and were rewarded when Chiriches levelled with an expertly-hit half-volley.

Defoe jumped clear of his effort before the ball found its way into the back of the net off Stekelenburg's right-hand post, and Holtby struck to secure the win eight minutes from time.

Berbatov hit the post late on for the hosts but the chances ended there, as Fulham are left with no points from their last possible 18.

Sunderland 3-4 Chelsea: Inspired Hazard downs Black Cats

    347165hp2.jpg

Eden Hazard's brilliant double helped Chelsea see off a spirited Sunderland to avoid losing ground on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The 22-year-old put in a man-of-the-match performance against the Black Cats, netting in both halves as Chelsea earned their ninth straight victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League after a seven-goal thriller.

Jozy Altidore had opened the scoring on his return to the Sunderland side with a fierce strike, but Frank Lampard's close-range header soon restored parity.

The superb Hazard put Chelsea ahead in the first half with an angled drive before a rare goal from John O'Shea once more levelled the scores on 54 minutes.

But Hazard restored the lead with a fine individual effort, before Phil Bardsley scored at both ends as Chelsea racked up three straight top-flight victories, while Sunderland remain rooted to the foot of the table with eight points.

Sunderland brought in Altidore and Jack Colback for Steven Fletcher and Sebastian Larsson, while Chelsea also made changes with Lampard and Willian coming in for Michael Essien and Oscar.

Chelsea fired an early warning shot when Lampard fired wide from 25 yards, but it was the home supporters who were on their feet celebrating after 14 minutes.

Andrea Dossena's free-kick rebounded into the path of Colback and his pass found Altidore, who turned John Terry in the box and fired home a left-foot effort.

Undeterred by the setback, Chelsea sought an immediate response and Jose Mourinho's side were rewarded just three minutes later.

Juan Mata burst into the box before cutting onto his right foot and lofting a pin-point cross for Lampard to apply the header from inside the six-yard box.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Chelsea continued to look threatening, but were largely frustrated by a resolute Sunderland defence until Hazard found the breakthrough on 36 minutes.

The Belgium international received the ball on the left and drove at the Sunderland defence before striking a fierce low effort into the far corner beyond Vito Mannone.

Gus Poyet would have been happy with the fight his Sunderland side showed in the first half and his charges found an equaliser against the run of play shortly after the break.

Chelsea failed to deal with Craig Gardner's corner and O'Shea swept home to level.

Mourinho was visibly frustrated on the sidelines and his mood should have been lifted when Hazard's shot was parried into the path of Fernando Torres, but the Spain international blazed over the crossbar.

But Chelsea did score a third goal for the third Premier League game running on 62 minutes as Hazard played a neat interchange with Lampard before rounding two defenders and driving past a helpless Mannone.

Demba Ba was introduced from the bench and his low cross was turned home by the unfortunate Bardsleyto open up a two-goal lead, but the former Manchester United defender turned in a corner with four minutes remaining to reduce the arrears for Sunderland.

Swansea City 3-0 Newcastle: Dyer & Shelvey down Pardew's men

    347168hp2.jpg

Swansea City ended Newcastle's run of four Premier League wins in a row with a convincing 3-0 trumph at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday.

Alvaro Vasquez was forced off early on but substitute Nathan Dyer gave the Swans the lead, before a Mathieu Debuchy own goal and a Jonjo Shelvey finish condemned the Magpies to defeat.

Boss Michael Laudrup made just one change to the Swansea side that lost 3-0 at Manchester City on Sunday, with Michel Vorm returning to the starting line-up in place of Gerhard Tremmel. Newcastle were unchanged from their 2-1 win against West Brom.

After an opening 10 minutes that was short of goalscoring opportunities, Yohan Cabaye went for an ambitious effort from just inside the Swansea half but was some way off target.

However, Vorm was called into action two minutes later when he got down brilliantly to his left to make a superb save from a Loic Remy header.

Vazquez – in the side due to injuries to both Michu and Wilfried Bony – was presented Swansea’s first chance of the match, blazing across goal from the right-hand side of the six-yard box.

Swansea then suffered a blow just before the half-hour mark as Vazquez added to the current Liberty Stadium attacking crisis by being forced off with an apparent groin problem.

He was replaced by Dyer and the winger was soon in the thick of the action, putting Swansea ahead shortly before the break. Tim Krul failed to deal with an Alejandro Pozuelo cross from the left and the substitute capitalised by smashing home from close range.

And Dyer could have doubled his tally just a minute after the restart, heading downwards from another Pozuelo cross but straight into the arms of a grateful Krul this time around.

Shola Ameobi then turned well in the penalty area to force Vorm into a diving save shortly afterwards, before Swansea raced to the other end of the pitch and Shelvey rifled wide of the left-hand post.

Remy then had an effort blocked from point-blank range in the 58th minute as Newcastle claimed for handball against Ben Davies - but referee Howard Webb waved play on and replays suggested that the awarding of a penalty would have been harsh.

And Swansea doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Shelvey was sent clean through on goal but was too hesitant in applying the finish. His blushes were spared, however, as Debuchy inadvertently prodded the ball beyond Krul and into his own net.

Shelvey then forced Krul into an acrobatic save from the edge of the penalty area in the 74th minute but had better luck nine minutes from time, as he curled a superb effort past the Dutch goalkeeper to put the result beyond doubt.

Southampton 2-3 Aston Villa: Delph screamer condemns Saints to third straight defeat

    347147hp2.jpg

Fabian Delph's screamer gave Aston Villa a shock win over Southampton at St Mary's and condemned Mauricio Pochettino's men to their third successive defeat.

Paul Lambert's Villa side were on the back foot for most of the game, but showed great character after being pegged back twice to edge a five-goal thriller at St Mary's Stadium.

Gabriel Agbonlahor's first of the season set Villa on their way before Jay Rodriguez hit back just after half-time with a superb header.

Libor Kozak's third goal of the campaign restored the visitors' advantage and although Pablo Daniel Osvaldo equalised, Delph's thunderous strike won it in a breathless game.

Victory means Villa stretch their unbeaten run to five, while Southampton have now lost three successive games for the first time under Pochettino.

The Saints boss made four changes from the weekend defeat at Chelsea, two of which were enforced. Injuries to Artur Boruc and Morgan Schneiderlin meant Steven Davis and 21-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga were both recalled.

Christian Benteke, Villa's top scorer last season, dropped to the bench.

The early signs were good for Southampton as captain Adam Lallana produced a fabulous piece of skill before being thwarted by Ron Vlaar and then saw his cross deflected onto the woodwork.

Villa's goal was leading a charmed life as Rodriguez stung the palms of Brad Guzan after 13 minutes.

But Lambert's men then hit Southampton with the ultimate sucker punch a minute later. Lallana was robbed on the edge of the Villa area and Agbonlahor was released on the halfway line. He burst into the area and easily evaded Dejan Lovren before finishing with aplomb.

Nathan Baker headed well wide as the hosts went in search of a second, but Southampton remained a threat and Rodriguez was denied an equaliser through a towering back-post header by a fantastic save by Guzan, who managed to claw the ball out after 26 minutes.

Southampton, however, did get the equaliser their first-half performance deserved after 47 minutes when Nathaniel Clyne's cross was glanced into the far corner by Rodriguez.

All the pressure was from the home side and substitute Osvaldo's audacious backheel volley forced Guzan into a diving save.

Villa, though, edged ahead again after 64 minutes. Agbonlahor dispossessed Jack Cork and crossed for Kozak, whose header was too hot for Gazzaniga to handle. It was the Czech's final act before being substituted.

The lead lasted less than five minutes. A deep cross was headed across goal by Rickie Lambert into the path of Osvaldo and he nodded in from close range.

But Villa had the last laugh with 10 minutes remaining - and what a strike it was. Delph surged forward and unleashed an unstoppable strike that arrowed into the top corner.

Stoke City 0-0 Cardiff City: Strugglers play out stalemate

    347158hp2.jpg

Stoke City and Cardiff City played out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League on Wednesday night, leaving both sides on 14 points for the season.

In a game devoid of chances, it was no surprise to see neither goalkeeper stretched throughout the match, as either side failed to bring any creativity to the encounter.

Peter Crouch had the best opening midway through the second half but he headed over the crossbar from an Oussama Assaidi delivery.

The result is the sixth time both sides have failed to score in a league fixture this season, with Cardiff picking up their sixth point away from home this term.

Both sides made two changes following defeats at the weekend, Marc Wilson and Marko Arnautovic returned for the hosts while Declan John and Aron Gunnarsson started for the visitors.

A scrappy start saw neither team impose themselves on proceedings and it was not until the 20th minute that the game had its first chance on goal.

It went to the hosts as Ryan Shawcross rose at the front post to meet a Charlie Adam corner. However, the central defender's header flew wide of goal.

Just after the half hour, though, Stoke threatened again as Arnautovic and Adam linked well down the right, the Scot's low cross was aimed at Crouch but he was unable to bundle the ball past Marshall.

Begovic was only tested once as Cardiff threatened just before the break, Don Cowie fired a corner in from the right but Jordon Mutch's header was punched clear by the Bosnia goalkeeper.

Cardiff threatened first after the break through Peter Whittingham but the midfielder's free kick was straight at Begovic and he held the ball easily.

The introduction of Stephen Ireland gave the hosts some creative spark in the midfield and within minutes of coming on he had a hand in a good opening.

Ireland released Assaidi down the right and the Moroccan delivered a perfect cross to Crouch but he could not direct his header on target from six yards.

Stoke continued to press for the winner, with Ireland slicing a shot wide.

And John drew a fine save out of Begovic as Cardiff went close to stealing a stoppage-time win - but the game deservedly finished goalless.

Mark Hughes' side have now failed to win five of their last six outings at the Britannia Stadium, coming out without a goal in four of those games as their stuttering start to life under the Welshman continues.

:(Manchester United 0-1 Everton: Oviedo late show ruins reunion for Moyes

    347151hp2.jpg

Everton stunned Manchester United and former manager David Moyes with a late 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Bryan Oviedo silenced the Theatre of Dreams on the 85th minute to secure three points for the Toffees and consign the champions to their first defeat since September.

Moyes spent 11 years as manager at Goodison Park before replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at United, but he was given a hostile reception from Everton fans and they rejoiced at full-time after an impressive 1-0 victory against their former boss.

Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra and Danny Welbeck were all denied by the woodwork, but Everton were impressive and had chances of their own before Costa Rican Oviedo struck four minutes from time.Victory for Martinez's men stretched their unbeaten run to seven games and left United well off the pace in the race for the title.

Marouane Fellaini returned to face his former club, with Ryan Giggs and Rafael also included for the hosts, but Robin van Persie (groin) remained sidelined.

Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas were restored to Everton's starting line-up at the expense of Leon Osman and on-loan winger Gerard Deulofeu, who impressed in his first Premier League start against Stoke City on Saturday.

Mirallas almost marked his recall with a goal after just eight minutes, when he cut in from the left and stung David de Gea's palms with a venomous right-foot drive from 20 yards out.

Moyes was given a hostile reception by the Everton fans when he ventured into the technical area for the first time before former United goalkeeper Tim Howard got down well to deny Rooney at his near post 15 minutes in.

Howard had to be alert once again to thwart Shinji Kagawa and Giggs' header flashed wide of the far post as United got into their stride. The Everton keeper was beaten after 28 minutes, but Rooney's deflected shot came back off the post.

Romelu Lukaku was a constant menace to the United defence in a frantic first half and De Gea saved the Belgium striker's effort with his feet five minutes before the break.

Moyes replaced Kagawa and Rafael with Nani and Adnan Januzaj just 12 minutes into the second half after Everton came out strong following the interval.

The visitors were bossing the midfield and Oviedo fired narrowly wide of the near post before Rooney was booked for a late challenge on England team-mate Phil Jagielka.

Deulofeu replaced the impressive Barkely after 68 minutes and was presented with a great opportunity to open the scoring within a minute of coming on, but De Gea denied the winger after Lukaku had played him in down the right.

United were twice thwarted by the frame of the goal when Evra's header was tipped onto the crossbar by Howard and Danny Welbeck headed the rebound against the bar from eight yards out.

Mirallas' free-kick rattled the post for the visitors, but Everton won it late on when Lukaku's cross was tucked home at the back post by the onrushing Oviedo.

Liverpool 5-1 Norwich City: Stunning Suarez haul destroys hapless visitors

    347164hp2.jpg

Luis Suarez scored four goals as Liverpool beat Norwich City 5-1 at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Uruguayan has now scored 11 in his last four appearances against Norwich, with this being his third treble in that time, and three of the strikes were of the highest quality.

The opener came after quarter of an hour as he thumped in a long-distance volley, before turning home a corner 14 minutes later.

His third was a beautifully struck half-volley from the edge of the box as he became the first Premier League player to score three hat-tricks against the same side, before he netted his fourth with a curling free kick 15 minutes from time.

Bradley Johnson headed a consolation home for the visitors before Raheem Sterling rounded off the scoring two minutes from time, as Liverpool sealed a fourth consecutive win over their opponents.

Liverpool made three changes from the side that lost to Hull City, while Norwich had just one alteration from the weekend as Johnson replaced Gary Hooper.

It was the home side who started on the front foot and Suarez gave the Reds the lead in spectacular fashion after 15 minutes.

John Ruddy made poor contact with a goal-kick and, as the ball bounced in favour of the Uruguayan, he looped a first-time volley high over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net from 40 yards.

And Suarez doubled the advantage in the 29th minute, hooking home Philippe Coutinho's left-wing corner after being given too much space six yards from goal.

Six minutes later, the striker completed his treble with another stunning strike.

After receiving the ball from Sterling, Suarez drove forward, chipped the ball around Leroy Fer and sent a searing half-volley beyond Ruddy from 20 yards to cap an exhilarating first-half performance.

Sebastien Bassong sent a free header over the crossbar four minutes after the break but two minutes later it almost got worse for Norwich as Ryan Bennett had to clear Steven Gerrard's goalbound header off the line.

Joe Allen was next to threaten the visitors' goal, bringing a flying save out of Ruddy with a thumping effort from 25 yards, before the England international dived low to his left to deny Suarez.

But Suarez did grab his fourth with a perfect 20-yard free kick that curled beyond the despairing Ruddy into the top corner, before Gerrard fizzed an effort of his own narrowly wide of the post.

In a frantic finish, Johnson flicked home Nathan Redmond's cross eight minutes from time, Gerrard hit the post and Sterling converted Suarez's pass as Liverpool bounced back from Sunday's humbling defeat to Hull City in style.

Arsenal 2-0 Hull City: Bendtner and Ozil see off Tigers

    347159hp2.jpg

Nicklas Bendtner scored on his first Arsenal start in almost three years as the Gunners comfortably beat Hull City to remain clear at the top of the Premier League.Bendtner's inclusion in the Arsenal XI raised eyebrows, but the Dane answered his critics in the perfect fashion, thundering a header home from Carl Jenkinson's cross in just the second minute after superb interplay from Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey.

Mesut Ozil doubled the hosts' advantage two minutes into the second half as Arsene Wenger's side eased to victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Hull never looked likely to recreate their heroics from Sunday's win over Liverpool as Arsenal maintained their four-point advantage at the top of the Premier League.

Bendtner came in as one of five Arsenal changes from the weekend win over Cardiff City, while Hull boss Steve Bruce made two alterations to the side that beat Liverpool - the suspended Curtis Davies replaced by James Chester in defence and Danny Graham coming in for Robert Koren.

Arsenal made the perfect start as Bendtner rose highest to plant Jenkinson's fine cross home after typically intricate build-up play.

The Dane could have doubled his tally 14 minutes in, but a heavy touch spoiled his chances after Allan McGregor had spilled Ozil's drive.

Arsenal were irrepressible, but Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny hit efforts over the crossbar, while McGregor dived to his left to keep a 25-yarder from the Welshman out.

Hull grew into the half as it wore on, Tom Huddlestone flashing a ball across the six-yard box and Chester heading wide from a corner as they went into half-time a goal behind.

But the hosts started the second half just as well as the first, Ozil playing a sharp one-two with Ramsey down the left channel before slotting past McGregor at his near post.

Ramsey then forced a smart stop from McGregor from a narrow angle with Robbie Brady having to head Bendtner's header from the resulting corner off the line.

Arsenal pressed on and Santi Cazorla went close on the hour mark, jinking past three players inside the area before seeing his fierce left-footed shot deflected wide by Chester.

Bendtner was afforded a standing ovation in the 72nd minute as he was replaced by Theo Walcott, rounding off a hugely positive outing for the much-maligned striker.

Ozil was denied a second by a desperate block from Hull substitute Liam Rosenior, while faint home appeals for a penalty were waved away as Jack Wilshere tumbled in the box under Chester's challenge.

But Wenger's side comfortably saw out the remainder, securing a fourth consecutive 2-0 victory on home soil.

:(Manchester United have no excuses for Everton defeat - Moyes

    347238_heroa.jpg

David Moyes admits Manchester United only have themselves to blame after seeing their Premier League title hopes dented by his former club Everton.
Bryan Oviedo scored the only goal of the game four minutes from time as Roberto Martinez succeeded where Moyes had failed by masterminding the Merseyside club's first win at Old Trafford for 21 years.

It was a miserable game for Moyes, who was given a rough ride by Everton fans in the first meeting between the two clubs since the Scotsman left Goodison Park to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at United.

An unmarked Oviedo popped up at the back post to end United's 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions with a defeat that leaves them down in ninth place, 12 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Moyes praised Everton - who are five points better off than United in fifth place - and concedes his new charges have made life difficult for themselves in the race for the Premier League crown.

He told Sky Sports News: "I'm very disappointed, but that's the way it goes. It was tight and we missed chances, but Everton took theirs.

"We needed a bit of good fortune and we didn't get it. We hit the post a couple of times and Tim Howard made some saves. Everton kept at it and showed what a good team they are.

"We didn't defend the goal well enough so it was our own doing. We had some chances, as did Everton. They have been playing well and that's why they are up near the top of the league."

When asked about his reception from the Everton fans, Moyes added: "It wasn't about me tonight.

"I was fortunate to manage Everton and I'm fortunate to be managing Manchester United. It's a big catch up for us now."

Cristiano Ronaldo to open his own museum in Madeira

    341692_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is to open a museum featuring his own personal prizes and other memorabilia in his native Madeira later this month.

The 28-year-old is suspended for Madrid's Copa del Rey clash against Olimpic de Xativa later this week and has been given extended holidays by boss Carlo Ancelotti as he recovers from the thigh problem he sustained in the 5-0 Liga win at Almeria late last month.

Ronaldo claimed the LFP prize for Most Valuable Player at a gala in Madrid on Monday, but is now back in Madeira to continue his recovery and oversee the planning of the new museum, before returning to Spain next week in preparation for Real's trip to Osasuna in La Liga on December 14.

And after that match, which kicks off at 16:00 CET, Ronaldo will travel to Madeira's capital Funchal ahead of the museum's planned inauguration the following day.

Made in Madeira | The museum is set to include Ronaldo's 2008 Ballon d'Or

The space, which will be located in one of the properties facing the seafront close to the port on Funchal's Rua Princesa Dona Maria Amelia, is currently being prepared for the grand opening later this month.

Ronaldo flew to Funchal in the early hours of Tuesday morning with dozens of boxes packed full of his personal prizes for the project, which is thought to include the Ballon d'Or he won in 2008, along with shirts, photographs and other miscellaneous memorabilia from his youth and professional career.

"The museum is a dream for Cristiano," a source close to Ronaldo's family told Goal. "He wants to give something back to Madeira and he came up with the idea along with his mother. It's a family project.

"He also wants to invest in other ventures in future on the island. This museum is just the start."

It is hoped the centre, which could carry Cristiano's CR7 brand in its name, will boost tourism in Madeira, an archipelago which lies some 400 kilometres north of the Canary Islands.

Ronaldo: I think Messi will win Ballon d'Or

    315887_heroa.jpg

Brazil legend Ronaldo has backed Barcelona forward Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or for a fifth straight year.

The Argentine has slipped to third-favourite to win the Fifa accolade with the bookies, behind Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery.

But the former Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabeu striker suggested Messi can take home the award once again and tipped the Argentine to come back strong from his current injury, which has seen him sidelined for the remainder of 2013.

"I think Messi will win the Ballon d'Or again," Ronaldo is quoted as saying by Marca.

"Messi has spent the last five years playing so many matches and he is the biggest star in world football. Now, this injury isn't serious, but maybe resting will allow him to recharge his batteries."

Ronaldo won the Ballon d'Or twice in his career - for his performances in 1997 and in 2002.

Ibrahimovic: Evian loss is a wake-up call for PSG

    347179_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic slammed his side’s display after the Ligue 1 leaders lost 2-0 away to Evian on Wednesday.

Goals from Clarck N'Sikulu and Modou Sougou in the second half secured a famous win for the hosts, and sees PSG’s unbeaten league run end at 26 games, one match shy of equalling the club record.

And Ibrahimovic was blunt about les Parisiens performance, which leaves them with a one-point lead at the top of the table over Lille.

“It was a bad game. We did not deserve to win,” he said to reporters.
“The team has not been good and we never found our rhythm. This is a good wake-up call. Every game is difficult and we must stay focused.”

However, PSG coach Laurent Blanc refused to blame his side for the setback, instead voicing his displeasure at the condition of the Parc des Sports pitch.
“We may think that we did not have all the ingredients to win, but in the first period, we had four or five clear chances,” he said.

“Even with Thiago [Motta], we would have struggled because the pitch was difficult. That's what upsets me a little. The conditions were very complicated."

However the 48-year-old did not attempt to take credit away from Evian for their triumph, though he was concerned that his side’s demanding schedule might be catching up with them.

“It is a bit difficult when we play every three days,” he added.

“But that does not diminish the merit of Evian. They played with heart, they [created] opportunities and if they had materialised, it could have meant more trouble. Congratulations to them.

“We did not create many chances. We may have regrets about the defeat, yes. But, in the first period, we could have opened the scoring. In the second, we played too bad to hope to win."

Mourinho: Hazard delivered his best against Sunderland

    347229_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho believes Eden Hazard delivered his best performance of the season in Chelsea's 4-3 win over Sunderland.

The Belgium international provided the assist for Frank Lampard's equaliser, while two fine strikes enabled Chelsea to remain second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal.

When asked where he ranked Hazard's display, Mourinho replied: “With me, the best.

“Maybe last season he did something similar or even better but with me that is the best.

“The talent and the ambition were there from the first minute and that’s the first time I’ve seen that from him.

“He has a great talent but sometimes he does an incredible thing then disappears from the game and then might come back in the second half.

“Today, though, the performance was fantastic.”

Mourinho was adamant Chelsea had played well throughout the 90 minutes but admits he is concerned by his side’s lack of concentration.

“The game is also about basic things and we failed in the basic things in the game,” he continued.

“That was down to defensive pieces and set plays. So in a game where we should win clearly, because of the way we played we risk the result up until the last second.

“In the last six minutes if they have two more corners, they win 5-4.”

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet also praised Hazard's performance and claims he will not make heavy changes to his side for their fixture against Tottenham on Saturday.

“He was unplayable, as a manager I haven’t come up against anyone like that,” said Poyet.

“The players in changing room just now have given everything. But unfortunately I don’t have a second team to send out on Saturday.

“We will rest tomorrow then we will pick ourselves up and prepare to beat Tottenham.”

    Stricken Robben in hospital drama

    347144_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich are sweating on the fitness of Arjen Robben after the Dutchman was taken to hospital on Wednesday night.

Robben was substituted after only 16 minutes of Bayern's DFB Pokal round of 16 encounter with Augsburg following a nasty looking collision with hosts' goalkeeper Marwin Hitz, leaving him with a gash on his right knee.

The winger had to be stretchered off as he was unable to walk off the park and was replaced by Thomas Muller.

There is no indication of how long Robben could be sidelined, but the Bavarians' sporting director Matthias Sammer says the 29-year-old was taken to hospital to cleanse the wound.

It put a dampener on what was a successful night for Pep Guardiola's men as they overcame Augsburg 2-0 to seal their place in the next round.

Robben had initially given Bayern the lead after only four minutes before his night came to an abrupt end when he collided with Hitz.

And the Oranje star's replacement Muller scored the clincher on 78 minutes after good work by Jerome Boateng.
