Brazil 1-1 Chile (pens 3-2): Super Cesar saves Selecao from early exit

    429893_heroa.jpg

Brazil overcame enormous pressure to edge past Chile on penalties in their World Cup last 16 clash in Belo Horizonte on Saturday following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.

David Luiz officially opened the scoring for Brazil after Thiago Silva's flick-on from a Neymar corner, although replays seemed to suggest the ball had come off Chile's Gonzalo Jara.

But the host nation were pegged back just after the half-hour mark when Alexis Sanchez equalised following sloppy Selecao defending from a throw-in deep in their own half.

Brazil fans were then brought to their feet 10 minutes into the second half only to have their hopes of a second goal dashed after Hulk's strike was disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

Both South American sides struggled to fashion a better goalscoring chance as energy levels dropped and the game went into extra-time, when Mauricio Pinilla had the best chance to win the match for Chile by crashing a 20-yard strike against the crossbar in the 120th minute.

And so the last-16 tie had to be decided with spot kicks and it was Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar who stood out as the hero, pulling off two saves to see Luiz Felipe Scolari's men into the quarter-finals.

Three hours earlier, thoughts that a highly-charged atmosphere would simmer after the spine-tingling national anthems were quickly dispelled, as Fernandinho - starting in midfield in place of the much-maligned Paulinho - crunched into an early challenge.

Perhaps concluding that there was already enough yellow on show in the stadium, referee Howard Webb rightly kept his cards in his pocket.

Brazil started brightly, beating Chile at their own game as they pressed high and afforded their South American counterparts little space.

And after 18 minutes their endeavour brought the corner that created the opening goal, Thiago Silva flicking on Neymar's delivery to the back post - where Gonzalo Jara tussled with David Luiz. The Paris Saint-Germain-bound defender was officially credited with the goal, although replays suggested that Jara had got a decisive touch to divert the ball goalward.

Far from assuming control, though, Brazil were made to pay for some sloppiness at the back 14 minutes later, Eduardo Vargas intercepting a stray Hulk pass and sliding in Sanchez, who produced the coolest of side-footed finishes.

Suddenly end-to-end in nature, the game almost had a third goal before the break as Neymar, Fred and Dani Alves all went close.

Chile gave another reminder of their threat just prior to the interval, Alexis denied his second only by Luiz's last-ditch sliding challenge.

Another flashpoint came quickly after the restart, Brazil prevented from taking the lead when Hulk was crucially adjudged to have handled Marcelo's ball over the top, which had preceded a fine left-footed finish.

The decision was met by a cacophony of jeers from the home fans, but relief was to displace any feelings of injustice Brazil might have had a few moments later, Julio Cesar producing a stunning reactionary save to keep out Charles Aranguiz's effort following fine work from Arturo Vidal and Mauricio Isla.

Brazil continued to look dangerous at the other end, although Neymar's customary composure deserted him as he headed Alves' cross straight at goalkeeper Claudio Bravo - who was later on hand to keep out a powerful Hulk strike.

Extra time brought with it an added caginess - albeit with the exception of Hulk, who - apparently spurred on by a sense of injustice - was at the heart of everything, epitomised by a powerful effort that forced Bravo into a stop.

With Chile suddenly camped on their own box, further chances did not materialise but Jorge Sampaoli's underdogs almost snatched it right at the end of the added period - substitute Pinilla rattling the woodwork with a thunderous drive in the final minute as the hosts were afforded a huge slice of good fortune.

And it was one they took full advantage of. Brazil immediately took control of the shoot-out as David Luiz sent Bravo the wrong way and Pinilla saw his effort saved by Julio Cesar.

And, despite misses from Willian and Hulk, Jara rattled the post with the final kick to leave Neymar's cooly taken effort as the winning one.

Sleepless nights for Suarez's family because of biting ban

    429724_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez's father, Rodolfo, says his family have struggled to sleep amidst the controversy surrounding the Uruguay striker's ignominious World Cup exit.

The Liverpool forward was suspended for nine international matches and banned from all football-related activity for four months after being found guilty of biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

The 27-year-old has now returned to Uruguay to be with his family, who have been left in a state of shock by the whole affair, according to Suarez's father.

"We are tired, as we did not sleep all night," Rodolfo Suarez told La FM on Saturday. "We are very hurt by this issue.

"Ask Fifa how we are. It's painful. Put yourself in our place. With what has happened to us, we do not want to talk to anybody."

Despite the suspension, Suarez is still being linked with a summer switch to Barcelona.

Higuain: I know nothing of Barcelona's interest

    424953_heroa.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain refused to be drawn on questions about his future following more rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona.

The former Real Madrid striker enjoyed an excellent first season with Napoli, scoring 22 goals in 41 games in all competitions, and reports have emerged that Barca are interested in buying him this summer.

Higuain, though, says he has not heard anything about it and is only concentrating on the World Cup, before praising his nation's and Barca's star man Lionel Messi.

"I know nothing [about Barcelona's interest]," he told reporters. "When I'm with Argentina I'm only thinking about this team."We all know what Leo does for us and can win a match at any moment. He is a key player for our team."

The striker then touched on the Albiceleste's World Cup chances, saying they are hopeful of going on to win the tournament outright, but admitted second round opponents Switzerland will be a difficult test.

"We feel there is a country behind this dream and hopefully we can give joy to the people with this cup," he added. "I have three Swiss colleagues [Valon Behrami, Gokhan Inler, Blerim Dzemaili at Napoli] and we must play well. We know their strengths and weaknesses.

"It's a World Cup that has had a lot of surprises and so we must be cautious. We must respect Switzerland so we don't get taken by surprise."

Switzerland can make history against Argentina, claims Hitzfeld

    423335_heroa.jpg

Ottmar Hitzfeld has stressed that Switzerland will not change their approach when they come up against Argentina in their World Cup second round tie and believes "anything is possible".

The South Americans are among the favourites to win this summer's tournament and will be expected to knock out the Swiss in Tuesday's last 16 clash in Sao Paulo.

Hitzfeld will end his illustrious coaching career when Switzerland's campaign comes to an end, but the German is not ready to go home just yet as he attempts to mastermind a famous win at the Arena de Sao Paulo.

And the 65-year-old has vowed to adopt the same tactics that have served him so well during his Switzerland tenure, adding that he believes his team can spring a surprise against Alejandro Sabella's men."We will remain true to our philosophy," he told the Swiss Football Association's website.

"That is, we want to build on our good organisation and compactness, accept duels and quickly switch from winning the ball in defence to attack. "I am convinced that we have opportunities. We are the clear outsiders but we have nothing to lose and much to gain.

"We can make history on Tuesday. Each player has the chance of his personal history being accompanied by a large chapter. In one game, anything is possible."

Boateng has played his last game for Ghana, says Heldt

    424861_heroa.jpg

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt believes Kevin-Prince Boateng will never play for Ghana again.

The midfielder was sent home from the World Cup before his team's final group match against Portugal along with Sulley Muntari for allegedly insulting coach Kwesi Appiah - a claim he denies.

And although Appiah has said the midfielder could return to the national team in the future, Heldt feels that Boateng has played his last game for Ghana as a result of the incident.

"We have seen at Schalke that he is as an absolute team player," he told Bild. "I can't imagine that he will run out for Ghana again.

"I am sure that this World Cup and the suspension will not burden him. Quite the contrary, anyone who knows Boateng knows that all this will motivate him more."
Ghana tumbled out of the World Cup prior to the knockout stages after losing to the USA and Portugal, despite a thrilling 2-2 draw with eventual group winners Germany.

Van Gaal: The weather will affect us

    427983_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes the heat and humidity in Fortaleza will hinder his Netherlands side more than it will Mexico in their World Cup second round match.

Many players have complained about the temperatures in Brazil throughout the tournament and some games have required water breaks during each half.

As well as the pitch not being in great condition, Van Gaal is worried that the conditions will affect his team on Sunday, saying the North Americans will adjust easier than his own players.

"It’s OK," he told a press conference. "I was here a year ago, and it was hotter then, but even so the humidity is so high that it will affect the match.

"That’s why we tried to get the players to be as fit as possible. I’m quite conscious that it will also affect the Mexicans, but they’re used to it much more than [Netherlands] are.

"With Ajax, I played Mexico in Mexico City, and our players could hardly keep up for half the match.

"The pitch is the most important material for a football player. I just checked the pitch and it’s not that good."

The coach admitted Miguel Herrera's team will be a difficult opponent for his side, insisting they are better than his side's previous opponents Chile, before praising their coach.

"I think Mexico are comparable to Chile. If you look at the entire Mexico team, I would say they’re better. They almost play identically.

"They play according to their qualities and their skill. Mexico are a bit more eager, and you see this – it’s part and parcel of every player in their team, which is a wonderful thing to see.

"I expect a match like against Chile. There’s not such a big difference between the way they play. The Chilean team has two outstanding players, Mexico not so much, perhaps, but that’s why they’re a better team.

"I do think Mexico can grow even further – I would say every team can grow and develop further. It’s my feeling that the Mexican players are very open to what their coach has to say.

"I like it if a coach enjoys himself and is passionate. I saw an interview with him and he even says sensible things, so what more could you want."

Van Gaal says Leroy Fer is the only injured player in the team, but that Bruno Martins Indi, who suffered a concussion in the game against Australia, remains a worry.

"Apart from Leroy, everyone is fit."

"[The situation with Martins Indi is] slightly difficult because you don’t know when an injury [of this type] is over and done with. He trained yesterday but that doesn’t mean he’s ready for these extreme conditions. He could play for 20 minutes."

Having finished top of their group with wins over Spain, Chile and Australia, Van Gaal praised his players and says there is a great atmosphere in the camp.

"Well, I don’t think it would be possible [to play so well] without excellent harmony between players and staff. We have this harmony, and we create this harmony.

"Both players and staff are convinced they need to progress as far as possible, and this has resulted in what we’ve been able to show the world.

"It’s incredible that we have played a new system after only three weeks. We have players from foreign competitions, and we only get them one or two weeks prior to the world championship."

'Ronaldo's season at Real Madrid affected his World Cup' - Raul

    429717_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid striker Raul believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s exploits during a long club season affected his performances for Portugal at the World Cup.

The Ballon d’Or winner enjoyed a successful campaign at the Bernabeu, scoring 51 goals to help his side to triumphs in the Champions League and Copa del Rey.

Raul was delighted to see his former club succeed this season, but feels the gruelling club calendar ultimately played its part in Ronaldo’s displays in Brazil as he failed to prevent Paulo Bento’s men from crashing out in the group stages.

“It was a sad exit from the World Cup for Cristiano Ronaldo,” the 37-year-old Al Sadd forward wrote in his column for The Times of India.

“Ronaldo had to be at his best for Portugal to snatch a big win against Ghana. He did get a goal, which turned out to be the winner, but that was not enough.

“The World Cup will not see the world's best player beyond the group stage and that is sad.

“Ronaldo was undoubtedly the player of the season, having helped Real Madrid to a 10th European title, scoring 17 goals in 11 Champions League matches, and breaking all records.

“But as we have seen so many times in the last few years, club commitments once again took its toll on a superstar and football's biggest show missed a chance to see him in full flow.”

After England, Italy, Portugal and Spain all crashed out of the tournament early on, European hopes for the tournament are reliant on Belgium, France, Germany and Netherlands.

Despite Les Bleus and Louis van Gaal’s Oranje squad showing the most attacking flair, Raul believes the Belgians and Germans should not be ruled out just because they have been steadier in the early rounds.

He continued: “Portugal’s exit was inevitable. Germany were deserving toppers of the group. They have played to a system that is so typical of them. Solid and unhurried, they have got the job done in every match.

“Of the European teams left in Brazil, the Netherlands and France have shown great attacking flair but Germany have looked very compact and organised.

“With the exception of the game against Ghana when they were rattled by the speed of the Africans, the Germans have looked untroubled by the challenges they have faced so far.

“The game against Portugal was one-sided, and even though they beat USA by the smallest possible margin, their superiority was never in doubt. The Germans have a habit of getting better as the tournament progresses.

“Belgium notched up three wins quietly and in all the games, produced something that took the opponents by surprise.

“Their substitutes have scored, which means they are not dependent on individuals.”

The round of 16 kicks off on Saturday with tournament hosts Brazil facing Chile and Colombia meeting Uruguay as the South American nations take centre stage.

'Muller is in unbelievably good shape' - Low

    429362_heroa.jpg

Joachim Low expressed his delight with Thomas Muller's goalscoring displays and hopes he continues when Germany face Algeria.

The 24-year-old attacker has already struck four times in Brazil, sitting alongside Brazil's Neymar and Argentina's Lionel Messi atop the Golden Boot standings.

Low revealed how impressed he has been with Muller, who claimed the top-scorer prize in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and believes the Algerian back four will struggle to contain him in their last-16 clash.

"Back in the pre-tournament phase it was clear he was in unbelievably good physical and mental shape," the 54-year-old German told a press conference.

"All our opponents find him hard to handle because his runs are very clever and he keeps popping up in the box.

"He's been in great form for weeks now, and with him I have the feeling the moves and runs come easily to him."

Germany and Algeria face each other in the second round in Porto Alegre on Monday.

Tottenham don't want to sell Lamela, say Inter

    334005_heroa.jpg

Erik Lamela is being denied a "dream" move to Serie A because Tottenham are reluctant to sell the attacker, claims Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio.

The 22-year-old forward signed for Spurs in a €30 million move from Roma last summer, but made just 17 appearances in all competitions as he struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

Nerazzurri president Erick Thohir confirmed in May that he was interested in signing Lamela, but Ausilio has revealed the White Hart Lane club are not willing to sell the Argentine.

"Lamela is a dream that we haven’t been given a chance to realise, simply because Tottenham don’t want to put him on the market," Ausilio told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Inter are attempting to reshape their squad after a disappointing campaign in which they finished in fifth position, 42 points behind Serie A champions Juventus.

The Nerazzurri have already added Nemanja Vidic to the side on a free transfer from Manchester United, and while Lamela is on coach Walter Mazzarri's radar, Thohir conceded the power lies with the selling clubs.

"Mazzarri likes Lamela and Luiz Gustavo but everything depends on the transfer market," he said.

"Some media report about our interest in [Edin] Dzeko and [Alvaro] Morata, but if their clubs don't want to sell these players we won't do anything."

Lamela scored 19 goals in 62 appearances for Roma before his big-money move to White Hart Lane, but following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas in December, he failed to convince Tim Sherwood of his talents - though new coach Mauricio Pochettino will now have the final say over the forward's future.

    Buttner completes Dinamo Moscow switch

    300306_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have confirmed that Alexander Buttner's move to Dinamo Moscow has been completed.

The Russian club announced an agreement for the left-back on Tuesday and his switch has now officially gone through, with the Red Devils confirming the arrival of Luke Shaw in his position on Friday.

"I want to play in the Champions League and win trophies," Buttner told his new club's official website after the initial announcement of a deal.

"Dinamo have a very strong team and I believe we can fight for first place [in the Russian league] this season."

Shaw, meanwhile, became the most expensive teenager in football history on Friday as he sealed a £30 million move to Old Trafford.

Combined with Patrice Evra's contract extension, the move meant there was no room for Buttner after only two years at the club.

"Dinamo Moscow has great plans for the future and they want to challenge for the title," the defender's agent told Voetbal International earlier in June. "To stay at Manchester United was not an option.

"In the past two years, Louis van Gaal has ignored Buttner time after time [for the Netherlands national team] so what kind of view does he have when Van Gaal becomes his new club coach?"

    Disallowed goal angers Hulk

    429882_heroa.jpg

Hulk has revealed his anger at match officials for disallowing his second half strike in Brazil's dramatic last-16 penalty shoot-out victory over Chile.

David Luiz opened the scoring 18 minutes into an enthralling encounter in Belo Horizonte but Alexis Sanchez levelled matters just after the half-hour mark.

The forward thought he had put Brazil back in front in the second half but his goal was disallowed for handball and the Selecao ultimately only scraped through 3-2 on penalties, with Julio Cesar saving two spot-kicks.

"It was a great match," Hulk, who missed during the shootout, told Rede Globo. "We knew how good Chile are.

"But we lost concentration and I made a mistake. It was our only mistake and they ended up scoring a goal.

"But then, there was my goal too, when the ball came to my chest but it wasn't given. To me, it was clean. I controlled the ball on my chest and shoulder.

"I saw the ball go in but he didn't give it and I initially thought [that the linesman] had given offside.

"But the important thing is really that we still made it [through]. In times like this we see the strength of the group; how much we support each other.

"We're together, we didn't let our heads drop. Thank God Julio [Cesar] made all those wonderful saves!"

Tournament hosts Brazil will now face Colombia in the quarter-finals.

    Chicharito benched again by Mexico

    423009_heroa.jpg

Mexico boss Miguel Herrera has revealed Javier Hernandez will again start from the bench in his side's last-16 clash with Netherlands.

El Tri finished second to Brazil in Group A after defeating Cameroon and Croatia either side of a 0-0 draw with the tournament hosts.

Herrera, therefore, has decided against tinkering with the side that has served him so well to date, with Carlos Salcido's inclusion at the expense of the suspended Jose Juan Vazquez the only change in personnel.

“The ban forces us to put in Carlos but he is a guy with loads of experience," the Mexico coach told reporters on Saturday.

"He doesn’t have the intensity of Vazquez, but he has the timing and positional sense to constantly recover the ball and long-distance shooting that could be an important factor."

There had been talk of Hernandez earning a recall after his goal as a substitute in the 3-1 defeat of Croatia, but the Manchester United man will once again start on the bench.

“Chicharito has been an important factor for the team," Herrera stated. "What I thank him for the most is that he has never sulked.

"A player in his situation could think he has done enough to be a starter, but Javier is still helping the team with his attitude.

"He never reduces his effort and when he goes on he offers the lift that the team needs."

Turning his attention to the Dutch, Herrera admitted that he holds his Netherlands counterpart Louis van Gaal in the highest esteem.

“I don’t believe I can compare to Mr. Van Gaal, who has done incredible things with his teams," he enthused.

"For me, it is a pleasure and an honour to be on the bench in front of someone as important as him.

"We have a great opponent, but we are sure of the effort and determination we are showing, and the physical state of the team.

“Tomorrow will be complicated, but we trust that we are going to win."

'Tears of joy' for Brazil hero Cesar

    429953_heroa.jpg

Julio Cesar was overcome with emotion after saving two penalties in Brazil's last-16 shoot-out victory over Chile.

The game was tied at 1-1 after extra-time, following goals from David Luiz and Alexis Sanchez in the first half of the contest, before the spot-kick drama unfolded on Saturday.

Cesar produced two crucial saves, with Gonzalo Jara striking the post with his penalty, which meant Brazil advanced 3-2 on penalties.

The goalkeeper was part of the Selecao side eliminated by Netherlands in the last eight in South Africa four years ago, so was left struggling to contain his joy after helping his side into the quarter-finals.

“I thank my team-mates," Cesar told reporters after the game. "I am emotional, moved, but also happy.

"Only God and my family can understand what I’ve been through and am still going through today. They gave me so much strength.

“I was crying in desperation four years ago, but now I cry tears of joy. There are still many games left to play, but I dream of celebrating.”

Cesar also admitted that the sense of expectancy surrounding the Selecao had been a heavy burden to bear in Belo Horizonte.

“We expected a difficult game despite a good first half,” the former Inter shot-stopper explained. “After the [Chile] equaliser we ran into problems.

"It was complicated, as we are playing on home turf and the pressure is enormous."

Giggs ready to give 'everything' for Manchester United alongside Van Gaal

    411550_heroa.jpg

Ryan Giggs has admitted he found his brief spell managing Manchester United "tough" last season, but is ready to give "everything" to learn alongside Louis van Gaal and help restore the club to its former glories.

The former Red Devils winger took over as interim player-manager at Old Trafford following the sacking of David Moyes in April, and has since been appointed as assistant to incoming coach Van Gaal.

Despite being initially overawed by the level of work required to lead a club the size of United, the Welshman believes his experience under Sir Alex Ferguson will stand him in good stead alongside the current Netherlands boss next season.

"When I took the [interim] job there were a lot of things that I was quite happy with, but there was the odd thing where I thought 'I'm not quite ready for this', Giggs told thefa.com. "Well it wasn’t that I wasn't ready for it, but I could do with a little bit more experience.

"I have gained that experience from Sir Alex [Ferguson] but last year I was still playing so I wasn't really focused on the coaching and the other side of things.

"This year I can put everything into it and learn from someone who has managed at the top in so many other countries.

"It has been a good thing that I have been with Sir Alex for so long but also I am now getting to see how other people work as well. I got a taste of David Moyes and now Louis Van Gaal this year."

Giggs was in charge of United for the last four games of a disappointing campaign in which the club surrendered their Premier League title and finished seventh, and thinks distancing himself from the playing squad will be a benefit next term.

"There was just so much to do [as manager]," he continued. "Before training you are in at half seven and by the time half ten had come you were knackered.

"Because I was still a player I just wanted to make the players aware that I was the club manager and get that distance away from them initially to say ‘I am not joining in training, I am looking to see what you are doing’. You can’t really do that if you are getting involved.

"Initially that was my feeling - not get involved with training and see how they were all performing. The majority of the lads were all fit so I had plenty to choose from so I wanted to get a good look. If you are involved and in the middle of it you don’t quite get the same look."

Giggs followed in the United tradition of trusting youth players by giving debuts to Tom Lawrence and James Wilson during his short spell in charge, and was vindicated as Wilson netted twice in a 3-1 win over Hull.

"I was lucky in the respect that I could get that balance right with really top, top players and throw a young player in at United," he said. "I had that cushion, that luxury of doing that but I have grown up with that philosophy so I am not going to just throw it away."

"I was a youngster once and I got given a chance and that is what it is all about as a young lad - if you get given a chance then you have got to take it. James [Wilson] certainly did and Tom [Lawrence] did brilliantly as well.

"I was really pleased for them but I didn't just throw them in - I actually watched them play and train the week building up to that and they didn’t look out of place - so if you are good enough then you are old enough."

Sneijder: Why can't Netherlands win the World Cup?

    423030_heroa.jpg

Netherlands star Wesley Sneijder believes his side can win the World Cup this year due to its great team spirit.

The Oranje have already exceeded their pre-tournament expectations by finishing top of Group B with wins over Spain, Chile and Australia and face Mexico in the second round on Sunday.

After finishing as runners-up in the tournament four years ago, Sneijder believes his team can go on and win the summer showpiece for the first time.

"When I start a tournament, I always want to win it," he said in an interview on Fifa's official website. "Four years ago, for example, it was a tough challenge for us but everything in the group was good and the whole process worked well for us.

"But we played the final and we lost. That was one of the toughest moments of my career so far. But the beautiful thing about football is that you always have the chance to gain a bit of revenge, and here we are four years later.

"And why can't we win it this time? I think we have a great team and a great spirit, so we have to go for it."

The Galatasaray player also praised the mood in the Oranje camp, as well as the work of coach Louis van Gaal.

"When you win, the atmosphere is always fantastic. We were in a very tough group and before the tournament a lot of people were saying we didn't stand much of a chance of progressing. But we always believed and [just before the World Cup] we started to play a new system.

"The coach stands over the team and creates the way we play. If you barely give any chances away against Spain, Chile and Australia, well, that's a big compliment, first of all to the manager because he's the one who makes us play like this, but also for the players because we're the ones who execute it.

"Everyone knows what's expected, everyone knows what to do. And we always know that on the counter-attack, we're very dangerous."

Arsenal line up €40m Alexis Sanchez bid

Arsenal will make a €40 million bid for Alexis Sanchez after identifying the Barcelona and Chile star as their No.1 forward target this summer, Goal can reveal.

Sanchez, whose World Cup is over after Chile were defeated on Saturday night by Brazil on penalties, is set to be sold by Barca this summer as they overhaul their squad following a disappointing season.

Sanchez is also attracting strong interest from Liverpool, Manchester United and Juventus.

The 25-year-old is a player in demand after a series of outstanding World Cup displays and a season in which his 21 club goals were bettered at Camp Nou only by Lionel Messi.

Goal revealed last month that Arsenal had sent a delegation to Madrid to hold talks with a mystery forward, who it is now understood to have been Sanchez.

The Gunners have been closely pursuing the forward over the last few weeks and the seriousness of Arsenal's pursuit is demonstrated by the fact that both chief executive Ivan Gazidis and contract negotiator Dicky Law were involved in the negotiations in Madrid.

Arsene Wenger and his scouts believe Sanchez has the attributes to be developed into a centre-forward at Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal need to convince Sanchez to choose a move to north London ahead of the other clubs competing for his signature.

The Gunners' top priority this summer is to clinch the signing of an elite forward who can provide competition next season for Olivier Giroud, the only senior striker at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal tried to sign Julian Draxler in a €37m deal in January and failed with moves for Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney last summer, as well as a last-ditch loan bid for Demba Ba.

The Londoners are also working on deals to sign Toulouse right-back Serge Aurier and Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall.
