Van Gaal tells Manchester United: I only want Strootman

    439017_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal has told Manchester United that he is prepared to wait until January to sign Kevin Strootman rather than bring in a weaker central midfielder this summer.

The United manager is a huge fan of Strootman and the club will monitor the Roma midfielder’s recovery from a serious knee injury with a view to trying to sign him in the new year.

Van Gaal has described the United squad as 'not balanced' and the Dutchman wants to sign a box-to-box central midfielder to bolster his side - but he is happy to wait to land a top-class target.

Arturo Vidal has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford, but while Van Gaal has declared his admiration for the Juventus star, club officials have been keen to play down any prospect of signing him this summer.

Interest in Germany international Toni Kroos earlier in the summer cooled before he joined Real Madrid from Bayern Munich, while concerted interest in Real midfielder Angel Di Maria looks like coming to nothing with the Argentine likely to join Paris Saint-Germain if he leaves the Spanish capital.

    440287_heroa.jpg

William Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon and Everton's James McCarthy have also been considered by Old Trafford officials, while Netherlands international Memphis Depay could prove a target next summer - but not this.

However, Van Gaal is adamant that the club need not panic buy, and is more than happy to work with his current midfield options come the start of the new Premier League season - with a view to making a move for Strootman in January.

That means the likes of Tom Cleverley look set to initially be given a far bigger role to play at Old Trafford than many may have expected. The former Wigan Athletic loanee, something of a scapegoat during the David Moyes era, has been given the captain's armband in pre-season and is one of a few of the club's fringe stars with a point to prove in 2014-15.

Van Gaal worked closely with Strootman, 24, in his previous role as Netherlands coach and believes his compatriot is perfectly suited to the Premier League and the style he wants to implement at Old Trafford.

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, is eager to provide Van Gaal with additions in the transfer market and has claimed the club are financially strong enough to break the world transfer record.

But Van Gaal is understood to have told Woodward to focus his attention on signing a central defender - Mats Hummels would be his dream signing, though a move for Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen is eminently more realistic at this stage - rather than chase high profile attacking players.

United started the summer with a €190 million budget and have spent almost €76m so far to bring Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera to Old Trafford.

Pique: I'm no longer in world's top three defenders

    440433_heroa.jpg

Barcelona ace Gerard Pique has conceded that he can no longer consider himself among the top three defenders in the world.

The Spain international endured a trying 2013-14 season for club and country, with the Blaugrana failing to lift a major trophy and La Roja suffering a humiliating first-round exit at this summer's World Cup.

Pique's form was the subject of much debate throughout and he has now admitted that he has fallen below his usually high standard.

"Right now I'm not even in the top three [defenders] in the world," the centre-half said in a press conference on Thursday.

"I can't be for the season I had with Barca and the World Cup with the national team. I know that to play at Barca I have to be among the top three in the world. I also know that I can regain form and I will do.

"But if I can't live up to the highest standards, I'm the first to raise my hand and say I can't.

"I'm convinced that Luis Enrique will help me and I'll get my level up again."

Indeed, Pique is confident that Luis Enrique is the man to restore Barcelona to their former glory after a dismal season under Gerardo Martino.

"It [last season] was a failure," he confessed. "Barca only won the Spanish Super Cup. We failed in the Copa [del Rey] and the league ended up worse.

"But it's clear that if we can improve we will be close to the trophies, if done with humility and hard work. Barca now have the ingredients to do something great."

Barca were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Atletico Madrid before theing pipped to the Primera Division title on the final day of the season by Diego Simeone's side.

PSV: Bakkali yet to agree personal terms with Atletico Madrid

    435908_heroa.jpg

PSV director Marcel Brands has revealed that Zakaria Bakkali has yet to agree personal terms with Atletico Madrid ahead of the winger's proposed move to the Vicente Calderon.

The Eredivise have accepted a bid from the Spanish champions for the Belgium international but the deal has been held up by the 18-year-old, and the uncertainty surrounding exactly who is representing him.

"We have an agreement with Atletico Madrid about Zakaria Bakkali, but this only counts when the player also reaches an agreement with that club," Brands told Fox Sports.

"I understand that he's not represented by his agent anymore and is doing business with a lawyer now.

"We made him an offer, but he refused. He gets the time to think about his future and until then, he's training in our second squad.

"He started very well with us, but then had a setback. He made some wrong decisions, but I hope he makes the right one now."

Bakkali announced himself as a rising star by becoming the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Eredivisie when he netted three times in last August's 5-0 win over NEC at the age of 17.

Premier League clubs target Celtic star Stokes

    440422_heroa.jpg

Celtic star Anthony Stokes is being targeted by a number of English clubs after dropping down the pecking order under new boss Ronny Deila.

The 26-year-old joined the Bhoys from Hibernian in 2010 and has emerged as a firm favourite ever since, netting 68 goals in 154 appearances.

Stokes was handed a new long-term contract last year by Neil Lennon, but Stokes now looks set to follow the former manager out of Celtic Park.

The Republic of Ireland forward was an unused substitute as Celtic crashed to a 4-1 defeat at Legia Warsaw to leave their hopes of reaching the Champions League group stages in tatters.

Premier League and Championship clubs have been alerted to the fact that Delia does not see Stokes as key to his plans and the player is not expected to agree to a less-prominent role.

A Celtic source told Goal: "Clearly Anthony won't be happy, and it won't be a shock if he is lured back to England."

Former club Sunderland, along with QPR, West Brom, Aston Villa, West Ham, Derby, Fulham and Norwich City are all understood to be amongst the clubs assessing Stokes's situation.

Caballero warns Hart: I've come to play

    440281_heroa.jpg

Willy Caballero has warned Joe Hart he has not come to Manchester City just to sit on the bench.

The Argentine goalkeeper, 32, completed a move to the Etihad Stadium from Malaga earlier this month.

Caballero is expected to play second fiddle to England international Hart, but aims to convince Manuel Pellegrini - his former coach at Malaga - he is worthy of a regular starting berth."I know the situation now but I will fight to play. The decision will be down to the coach, the boss. I have trained well and I will fight," said Caballero.

"I know my position, but I want to try hard to fight for this position. Joe is a fantastic goalkeeper, but I've come to play - I want to try and take my opportunity.
"It will be difficult, yes, but City are a big club and it's a big opportunity. I want to try in every way I can to play."

Caballero acknowledged that Pellegrini was a major factor in his decision to join City."It was a crucial part of me coming to City knowing him from before and having played for him. He was a very important figure in me coming to Manchester City," added the experienced stopper.

"I had no doubt about the move. I think it was necessary for my career, for my life and for my family. It's fantastic for me."He hasn't given me any promises. No, I only know that he wanted me. I came here for the best opportunity for my career.

"I don't know if I play in the cup or other tournaments, I don't know anything. But of course I am confident."Goalkeepers are a different type of player and I believe in myself."

Mourinho rules out Chelsea exit for Torres

    440429_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho insists Fernando Torres will not be leaving Chelsea despite the club needing to lose an overseas player.

Premier League rules state that a 25-man squad must consist of no more than 17 foreign players, but Chelsea have one extra following the arrivals of Diego Costa, Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis.

Englishman Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole both left in the close-season, while Gary Cahill was the last high-profile home-grown player to join, but Mourinho is not interested in selling the much-maligned Torres.

"Three strikers is fundamental in the squad and we have three," he told Sky Sports News.

"'Nando [Torres] is one of them. We have a good squad. The perfect squad would be with this 18 players, not 17, but rules are rules and we are working hard, even here, to not have these kind of problems in the future.

"[We want] to have more English players in our squad which we are going to have in the future but in this moment we are still in the middle of this process.

"So at the moment we have to make a decision about one player not to be on that list."

Torres has been linked with a possible return to Atletico Madrid but president Enrique Cerezo has stated the Spanish champions are not considering the 30-year-old a target.

:)Glazers offer up eight million Manchester United shares

    440131_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's owners have revealed they will sell eight million shares of their stake in the Premier League club.

The Glazer family will part with about five per cent of United's shares on the New York Stock Exchange, which is set to earn the American investors US$154.5m (€115m).

The current share price on the NYSE for United is $19.31 (€14.43), after Wednesday's trading.A press release stated the Premier League powerhouse would not be beneficiaries of the share sale, only the owners.

"Manchester United will not receive any proceeds from the sale of any Class A Shares by the Selling Shareholder," the statement read.

"The Class A Ordinary Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol 'MANU.'"The Glazers appear to be cashing in on the club's renewed optimism, after replacing David Moyes with Louis van Gaal as manager.

When Moyes' sacking was confirmed, United's share price had dipped to US$14.98, but had already bounced back to $16.74 by the time Van Gaal was appointed.

The Glazers' ownership has often been a source of frustration for United fans following the Americans' takeover in 2005, with many believing the club has been denied suitable transfer and operational funds.

Cazorla and Chicharito not on our agenda, claims Atletico president

    439880_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo claims his side are not currently pursuing deals for Premier League trio Santi Cazorla, Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and Fernando Torres.

All three attacking players have been heavily linked with the Spanish champions in recent weeks as they look to reinvest the funds from the sales of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis, with coach Diego Simeone admitting Mexico international Chicharito was "a great option".

Cerezo, however, has poured cold water on any imminent approaches for the England-based trio and Napoli winger Jose Callejon.

"Many names have been said, but Cazorla, Torres, Chicharito, Callejon - none of them are on our agenda," he told Radio Marca.

Atletico have already reached an agreement with Real Sociedad for Antoine Griezmann, believed to be worth €25 million, and Cerezo believes the France international will be the best transfer this summer - better, even, than James Rodriguez to Real Madrid.

"He is the signing of the summer. He is comparable to players like Luis Suarez. James is not the same as he does not yet have a defined path," said Cerezo.

"It's a great boost for the club, we made a great effort to bring him in. Although he had many offers, he decided on a club as serious and important as Atletico."

Reports have emerged to suggest Chelsea could be plotting a move to take Miranda to Stamford Bridge this summer, and while Cerezo has rubbished the rumours, he admits players could be tempted to leave the club should significant financial offers be forthcoming.

"I have no idea about any offer, and if I've not heard anything it's because he is going to stay, I'm sure of that," he added. "Koke preferred to stay, that's clear. If a player wants to leave, it's not becaue he is not comfortable here, it's due to financial reasons."

Rose signs new five-year deal with Tottenham

    437080_heroa.jpg

Danny Rose has signed a new five-year deal with Tottenham, the Premier League side have announced.

The left-back's future at White Hart Lane was in doubt following the €12 million arrival of Ben Davies from Swansea City, with Hull City linked as potential suitors.

However, after earning a regular spot under both Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood last season, Maurico Pochettino has showed similar faith by tieing the 24-year-old to the club until 2019.

Spurs are also closing in on the signing of centre-back Eric Dier from Sporting, who has agreed a five-year deal after a €5m fee was settled on with the Portuguese outfit.

Hugo Lloris was awarded with a new five-year contract upon his return from the World Cup, while centre-back Jan Vertonghen is ready to commit to similar terms.

Pochettino has brought into just two players since arriving at Tottenham, Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea, but is hopeful of luring Morgan Schneiderlin with the player prepared to hand in a transfer request.

Rodgers promises more Liverpool signings this summer

    439331_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers is keen to further bolster his Liverpool squad, insisting the club "still have business to do" this summer.

Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi have already arrived for a combined fee of around €113 million following Luis Suarez's €88m move to Barcelona.

Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno has been touted as the next arrival at Anfield, with the Liga outfit demanding €23m for the player, and Rodgers is hoping to have secured his targets by the end of the transfer window.

"We still have some positions that we want to fill within the squad so that by the end of August we have a strong group of players to go forward with," he told reporters on Thursday.

"We've still got some business to do."

Liverpool heavy investment has been likened to Tottenham's €120m spree as Gareth Bale left last summer, which heightened expectations only for the north London outfit to finish sixth in the league.

Rodgers rejected such comparisons earlier this week, adding: "Clearly we were not strong enough last season in terms of numbers and quality.

"We always planned to bring in a number of players, hoping we were going to be in the Champions League, so it would give us the opportunity to challenge on all fronts."

    'Mandzukic reminds me of Falcao'

    438346_heroa.jpg

Former Atletico Madrid defender Alvaro Dominguez has compared the club's new signing Mario Mandzukic to his old team-mate, prolific forward Radamel Falcao.

Dominguez, who played for Atletico between 2008 and 2012 alongside Falcao and has faced Mandzukic in the Bundesliga, predicts the Croatian will be a perfect fit for the Spanish league champions following his move from Bayern Munich to replace Diego Costa.

"For me Mandzukic is a natural striker and a little old-fashioned. He's very dangerous in the penalty area," said Dominguez to Mundo Deportivo.

"You can't expect a player like Diego Costa because they aren't the same. Costa ate goals. In this sense Mandzukic reminds me more of Radamel Falcao, more of a predator in the area.

"I think Atletico has a hit with this signing, especially if they surround him with players who will create, something I don't think will be a problem with Arda Turan, Koke and Raul Garcia.

"From what I saw in Germany I found him very complete. I couldn't emphasise one aspect over another. He's big but has good speed, holds the ball well, plays for second balls and has great anticipation in the area."

Dominguez believes Mandzukic will need time to adjust to his new surroundings but is fully confident there is enough quality in the side to allow him to flourish in front of goal.

"I think every player has to go through an adjustment period but it points to something good," said the 25-year-old, now playing for Borussia Monchengladbach.

"If he has quality people with him, he'll score lots of goals."

Chelsea youngster Kakuta joins Rayo Vallecano on loan

    364872_heroa.jpg

Chelsea winger Gael Kakuta will spend the season on loan in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano.

Kakuta joined Chelsea from Lens in 2007 but has spent the last three-and-a-half years out on loan at a variety of clubs.

Having previously enjoyed temporary stints with Fulham, Bolton, Dijon, Vitesse and Lazio, the 23-year-old will now ply his trade in Spain's top flight.

Both Chelsea and Vallecano confirmed Kakuta's loan move via brief statements on their respective official websites.

The Madrid-based club, who finished 12th in La Liga last season, recently strengthened their squad with another signing from the Premier League, bringing in Alejandro Pozuelo from Swansea City.

Pozuelo was officially presented to the media on Thursday.

:(Van Gaal was sorry to see me go, says Evra

    440342_heroa.jpg

Patrice Evra has revealed personal reasons were behind his decision to leave Manchester United and make the switch to Juventus - though he says new manager Louis van Gaal was eager to keep him.

The France left-back agreed a two-year contract with the Serie A champions earlier this month after asking to leave United towards the end of the previous campaign.

His decision to move on ended an eight-and-a-half year stay in England that saw the 33-year-old lift five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League.

Evra revealed on Thursday that although he had signed a one-year extension at Old Trafford in May, he had no hesitation in making the switch to Turin once a €2.5 million deal had been agreed.

"It was really difficult to leave Manchester United, it was for personal reasons," he said at a media conference in Turin.

"Three months before the end of the season I asked to speak to other clubs and when I knew Juventus were interested it was an easy decision, but the most difficult thing was to leave Manchester United.

"Manchester had great confidence in me. I spoke to Van Gaal, who was sorry to see me go, but I wanted to come to Juventus."

Juve have won the past three Serie A titles under Antonio Conte but preparations for the new campaign were thrown into doubt when the head coach left his role with the club on July 16.

Massimiliano Allegri replaced Conte at the helm and Evra, who does not have any concerns about the 45-year-old's departure, is ready for the challenges that come with defending the league crown.

"The minute Juventus came calling, I knew it was the right choice for me," he added. "They have the same winning mentality as me.

"Juve wants to win this year, I have never won the championship four times in a row, but it won't be easy.

"I managed to do it three times with Manchester United and know how difficult the challenge is.

"We hope to do well in the Champions League too. It's a great competition and we'll look to go as far as we can."

Tottenham agree €5 million deal for Dier

    440274_heroa.jpg

Tottenham have agreed a €5 million deal with Sporting for England Under-21 international Eric Dier.

The central defender has accepted terms on a five-year contract at White Hart Lane, which he is due to sign on Thursday, with the Portuguese outfit not retaining a sell-on clause.

The 20-year-old was born in Cheltenham but moved to Portugal a decade ago, where he was quickly recruited into Sporting's renowned academy system.

Dier signed professional terms with the Lisbon club in 2010, was loaned to Everton for half a season the following January, and has made 30 first-team appearances for Sporting over the last two campaigns.

Eligible for citizenship in Portugal, Dier has resisted approached from the Portuguese federation to play for their national teams, and has been capped by England at every youth level from Under-18 upwards.

Tottenham have been working on strengthening their options in central defence for several months amidst doubts over Michael Dawson's long-term fitness and with Younes Kaboul's contract entering its final year.

Often played out of his preferred central position as a left back, Jan Vertonghen has been offered a revised five-year-deal and recently stated that he "would like to stay at Tottenham".

New manager Mauricio Pochettino has taken a direct role in approaching potential new recruits, meeting earlier this week to discuss the transfers of Portuguese defenders Jose Fonte and Miguel Lopes.

Fonte, 30, has just a single season left on his Southampton contract and would be allowed to leave the South Coast club for a reasonable transfer fee.

Sporting right-back Lopes spent last season on loan at Olympique Lyonnais and has been identified as a replacement for Kyle Naughton if the former England Under-21 international is sold.
