I am currently living in Australia. I came here to do a PhD, but I couldn’t complete it due to problems with my supervisor. What your friend told you is true. Before 2020, doing a PhD could give you a much better chance of getting PR through pathways like the Global Talent program. Now, things have changed significantly, and there is no clear or guaranteed pathway to PR after completing a PhD.

You can try to continue with a postdoc or stay in academia, but the academic environment can be very stressful and, in some cases, toxic. So choose wisely.

I come from a strong IT background and have previously worked for one of the top three technology companies in Sri Lanka. Now I am doing Uber Eats, and I really regret the decision I made. Don’t make your decision based only on other people’s advice. Think carefully and choose what is best for you. Many people think doing a PhD will automatically lead to a stable future or PR, but that is not the reality anymore.

I know this situation from the inside. If you genuinely love research and really want to pursue it, then go for a PhD. Otherwise, think carefully before making that commitment.

I started a PhD and gave up, as I was dead bored with it and just couldn't continue.

I agree with @FFAlpha in many ways. A PhD doesn't make you a genius or give you massive opportunities. Case in point is there's one guy with a PhD working in my team in the current job and three times a day he comes to me asking for advice about something or the other.

Just do what really interests you. Don't worry about money right now. If you choose the path based on interest rather than money or potential for opportunites, there's a high chance you will succeed. Unfortunately most Sri Lankans don't think this way.

It’s not as easy as just booking a flight ticket and coming back. Coming from a middle-class family, there aren’t really any savings to fall back on. And since I’ve been out of the industry for some time, getting back into the industry in Sri Lanka is also difficult.

There are a whole lot of things attached to this situation. I’m giving my best every day and doing everything I can to secure something before my visa runs out.

Yes. If I were in that position, I would probably go to Dubai, earn some money while working, gain more industry experience, and then try for skilled migration. At least that way, I would have some kind of safety net, both financially and in terms of experience. Most of my peers have now settled down in Sri Lanka. They’re building houses and buying cars. I know most of it is through loans, but still, they’ve started their journey and are moving forward. Most of them are now in TL or ATL positions as well.

Once you move into academia, especially in IT, it can be difficult to move back into the industry. If you return to Sri Lanka and stay in academia, the salary is honestly quite low. But if you try to go back into the industry, you can sometimes be seen as overqualified academically while also having a gap in recent industry experience. That’s why this decision isn’t as simple as just coming back. There are a lot of things tied to it, and I have to think carefully about my career, finances, stability, and future.

Also, if you can, I think doing a PhD in Europe would be a better option. In many European countries, PhD candidates are considered full-time employees, so those PhD years can also count as work experience. In Australia, you are mainly considered a student. Completing a PhD can give you an additional 5 points, bringing the total to 20 points compared with an MRes or MPhil, but apart from that, the benefits are more limited.

There are also some specific PR pathways for PhD graduates, especially if you complete your PhD in places like Canberra or Tasmania. However, because there are only a few universities in those states, getting a PhD offer can be highly competitive. So choose wisely. Time is one of the most important factors here, and you need to think carefully about which option gives you the best long-term outcome.

මට තියෙන අනිත් Option එක තමයි ඩුබායි යන එක. එහේ Civil engineers ලට ඕන තරම් Vacancies තියෙනවා. ගිය අය කියන්නේ තව අවුරුදු 300 කටවත් එහේ අළුත් Construction වැඩ නවතින්නේ නෑ කියලා. තාම අතගහපු නැති පැති බරටම තියෙනවා. Google map එක බැලුවත් ඒක පේනවා. සාමාන්‍යයෙන් මම ගියපු අයගෙන් ඇහුවම, පළවෙනි සැලරි එක ලක්ෂ 5 ට ගිය අයත් හිටියා, පළවෙනි සැලරි එක ලක්ෂ 12 ගිය අයත් හිටියා. ඒ නිසා මේ අතරේ ගාණක් පළවෙනි සැලරි එකට ගන්න පුලුවන්.

මට එහෙම ලොකු සල්ලිකාර පවුලකින් එන කෙනෙක් නෙවේ බං. ඒකයි මෙච්චර උඩට ඉගෙනගත්තෙත්. මට හිතෙනවා ජීවිතේ සල්ලි තමයි Important වෙන්නේ කියලා. මට දැනට හම්බෙන පඩියත් එක්ක, මගේ Basic වියදම් Cover කරගන්නත් ටිකක් අමාරු සීන් එකක් තියෙන්නේ. ඒ නිසා තමයි ඩුබායි Option එක බැලුවේ. ඒත් වෙලාවකට හිතෙනවා, මම ඩුබායි ගිහින්, මගේ Basic අවශ්‍යතා ටික සම්පූර්ණ කරගන්න ගාණක් හම්බුණාට පස්සේ මම මානසික නිදහසට Priority එක දීලා ගත්ත Decision එක ගැන Regret වෙයිද කියලත්.

මේ යන විදිහට (Civil ඉන්ජෙක් විදිහට), ගෙයක් වාහනයක් ඉක්මණින් ගන්න තියෙන Option එක මේක විතරයි වගේ සීන් එකක් තියෙන්නේ. ඩුබායි ගිහින් කට්ට කාලා හොද කුට්ටියක් ඉතිරි කරගෙන එන්න හිතෙනවා.

ඒත් ඩුබායි වල පට්ට වැඩ ටිකක් කරන්න තියෙනවා. දවස් 6ක් වැඩ. එළියකට බහින්න බෑ රස්නේ නිසා. කොටු වෙලා ඉන්න තියෙන්නේ.
සෙල්සියස් 40ටත් නගිනවා සමහර දවස් වලට. ගියපු එවුනුත් මහ ලොකු සතුටකින් නෙවේ ඉන්නේ සල්ලි හම්බුණාට කියලා හිතෙනවා උන් එක්ක කථා කරාම.

ඕක තමයි මගේ ප්‍රශ්නේ. Path එකක් හොයාගන්න බැරිව ඉන්නේ. උඹලා හිතන්නේ මම මේ වෙලාවේ ගන්න ඕන තීරණේ මොකක්ද කියලා???

I live in Dubai so hers the truth.

Construction is seriously down due to current geopolitical issue aka Iran war. lots of people lost jobs and construction sector affected badly, and some of the new projects postponed or cancelled due to lack of demand for new apartments and cashflow issues. Ongoing projects slowed down and lots of workers in construction field got redundant. Dubai construction market will rebound but don't expect it to go back to normal levels for another 3-4 years.

For a job as a junior, you'll have to compete with experienced Indian workers. They are everywhere and willing to work for 2000aed. I doubt you can get 5000aed starting salary.

However if you can go through hardship, my advice is find a job in good project in Dubai and get experience for 4/5years. Try to specialise or get work experience in niche are in civil engineering. Then apply for direct PR.
