Lord Buddha him self paid his gratitude to the holy tree for supporting him in attaining enlightenment. Buddhists should worship in that sense, and no other.

absolutely correct, being a Buddhist is all about following the noble eightfold path, and nothing else.

Not in the sense that those object can get you done anything from passing from an exam to healing illnesses... no... but in the sense of paying our tribute to and respect to holiness they hold.
By "remains of dead people", if you refer to the holy relic or any other remains of noble people in Buddhism, it is totally unacceptable.
Lord buddha himself have advised Buddhists to do so, since those objects/ people deserves that kind of respect.
