I believe you should be using the same software when comparing two products.

Use VLC Player for both onboard and dedicated sound card testing, to make it fair.

People who want a top notch system would pay so much for an audio card. After spending well over USD3000 on a PC, who would wanna live with integrated audio?

But for standard rigs, I think it is a waste of money. (unless of course you are into music production or serious gaming...but in this case again, it will be one expensive system)

Well, if someone disagrees,
1. he may not have good speakers
2. he may not think it is bad, but different (it all comes down to the audio filtering, and some people might prefer a certain type of filtering than another...you change the filtering with the equalizer)
3. he can't use the full volume of the speakers
4. he has excellent eyes (we all know, people who can't see are the one who use the ears more...kidding :P)
and more.... LOL

P.S.
Don't get offended :D

    1. Its like this if you have some big need for audio or you are a big fan for movies, music and have money to spend on it then its good to have a separate dedicated audio card.

    2. If you talk about the system resource usage, I think optimizing firewalls, anti viruses and those unwanted startup programs can save much more resources than what you save from a dedicated audio card.

    3. If you want to hear really good difference between latest onboard audio chips and dedicated separate cards. You will have to spend lot more money on your computer. Almost same like what you spend for a economy level machine.
You got to have expensive sound card and in the same time expensive speaker system to really feel the difference of audio quality.
Latest onboard audio chips are allmost enough for normal or even mid level audio enthusiasts.

I quite agree with what you say....but a X-Fi will own any onboard in the market.......

with my 2.1 sound system i hardly feel any sound quality differences. with some software enhancements , onboard sound is more then enough for me..

But how much we have to spend on the fraction of audio improvemnet?

    1. X-Fi Card
    2. Superb Quality Digital 7.1 Speakers.

Can a normal SL person can afford that? Its even more expensive than their total machine.

So machan it up to the person. If you got cash and if you are a really big audiophile then go for it.
If not stick with the onboard but try atleast to get good 2.1 analog speaker system to feel some decent pleasure from the audio.
