Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup preparations have taken a decisive turn, with the Sunday Times reporting that Sri Lankan selectors have decided to drop Dhananjaya de Silva from the squad following another underwhelming performance with the bat, while Kamindu Mendis has been recalled as selectors move swiftly ahead of the global tournament.

However, there has been no official confirmation from Sri Lanka Cricket, with Saturday (January 31) being the final day for teams to submit their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squads.

According to the report, de Silva’s return to the T20 side was intended to be an opportunity to reassert his value in the shortest format. Instead, it highlighted his struggles. In the opening T20I against England, he scored 11 off 12 balls in an 11-run defeat, failing to provide momentum at a crucial stage of the innings.

Kamindu Mendis is reportedly the likely replacement. Previously dropped from the ongoing England series, the left-hander’s ability to bat in multiple positions and adapt to different match situations is seen as a valuable asset in tournament conditions.

Speaking to Newswire last night, international commentator Russell Arnold said Dhananjaya de Silva’s current form remains a major concern.

“A player like Dhananjaya is useful because of his all-round ability, especially in Sri Lankan conditions,” Arnold said. “But with his present form, his place in the team is a big question.”

    World cup
