I'm 28 years old this year mchn.
I'm at an age where you get to meet people who have graduated fro state unis and they've been working in the corporate sector for some time. I know someone who was a hard line jeppa during his uni days. But now they can see the life after the uni and what needw to be done if they want to succeed in their career.
Nobody places a major importance on your degree. Everybody cares about the attitude of the new recruits. As we say in sinhala "nalale thiyan innawa" attitude won't get you anywhere. Sadly this is the mental state of these jobless graduates who are asking for government jobs as I have mentioned in the above pic.
Good attitude can get you so many opportunities.

UGC should definitely taper enrollment for their art degrees. This is the problem. Art faculties should be open for people who have serious academic goals in humanities. Right now it's more or less a consolation basket to sustain the hopes of students who don't fit anywhere.

However the fact that there are sub-par graduates isn't exactly a compelling indictment against free education. I think you (and others who tend to denounce free education over this particular dynamic) are bending over backwards to make a point here. We should sort out the problem of the inept graduates but I fail to see how it could be a systemic flaw of the free education ethos.

I'm not against the free education mchn. From my school days to uni days, even I learned from the teachers and lecturers who were products of the free education here in SL. Whar I'm saying is arguing against private unis isn't the solution to this. Those who have money will go abroad and will return and won't hear anything from these people.
But those who are seeking to complete their higher studies get their chances diminished due to these ass holes. That's neither good nor ethical.

There should be a law. If a person get a free education from the country and till age 35 they don't get a job then they will either be jailed or have a yearly fine to pay because they wasted the tax payers money and do nothing for the country.
