Wesley College staged a superb second half rally to beat Ananda College by 25 points to 17 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

The Wesleyites who were trailing 15-17 at half time came back magnificently to turn the game in their favour and register their third win in the tournament collecting their points from one goal, three tries and one penalty. The Anandians responded with one goal and two tries. Number eight Dulanjana Wijesinghe, flanker Elham Sally, winger Zalique Jayah and centre Azward Aniff scored a try each for Wesley College with the latter converting one try and also putting over a penalty.

Ananda College made a promising start to the game and dominated the first half following three splendid tries from winger Dilshan Dharmasiri, fly half Lahiru Gunasinghe and prop forward Thilina Nanayakkara. However centre Thusitha Fonseka managed to convert just a solitary try for Ananda.

Kingswood College, Kandy, made mince meet out of Vidyatha College when they trounced them by 67 points (6 goals 5 tries) to nil in their schools Singer Shield rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time Kingswoodian led 33-0.

They outclassed both in the scrums and line outs, possessions did not come Vidyatha's way as they were pegged down even in loose play. This contributed to their huge defeat.

Kingswood on the other hand made their key players like Gayan Ratnage and Roshan Weeraratne to play in a low key and allowed some of the new comers to run with the ball and score. They even tried them in spot kicking in which five players were tried out.

Try scorers for Kingswood were M. Rizvan (2), Gayan Ratnage (1), Harsha Ranaweera (1), Mohamed Fozly (1), Ragitha Sansoni (1), Prabath Jayalath (1) Rajitha Jayasuriya (1), Asiri Medarigama (1), Imal Danaratne (1), Six of these tries were goalled by Roshan Weerathne (2), Mawan Dharshana (1), Rajitha Abeykoon (1), Chaminda Ratnayake (1), and Kasun Wijsuriya (1), Pradeep Fernando referee

Earlier Mahanama College cruised to their third successive victory this season while outplaying Science College Mount Lavinia by 41 points to 12 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

Mahanama College stormed into a commanding 22 nil lead at half time and collected their points from three goals and four tries. Science College produced an improved performance in the second half and scored a goal and a try. The match winner for Mahanama College was their fly half and playmaker Sahan Umagaliya who planted five superb tries including a hattrick.

In fact he ran down their first four tries in a blistering 35 minutes of play and added another try to his tally in the second half.

Winger Shanaka Chaturanga joined in the fun during the latter stages of the match to score two good tries.

Mahesh Karunanayake converted two tries and Ramesh Gunawardena converted one try.

Winger S. Niluka and centre Nimesh Channa scored a try each for Science College with Ashan Malik converting one try.

Trinity win saves referee and touch judges

By M. Shamil Amit

The fourth round of matches in the Singer inter-school rugby tournament was concluded over the weekend. Of the four matches played in the Division 1A category the much looked forward to encounter was between the two unbeaten teams Trinity and S. Thomas’at Pallekelle.

The encounter proved to be worthy of a final and in the end leaving aside a draw only one side could win.

One other match between St Anthony’s and St Peter’s which was also played in Kandy was an interesting one while the games between Royal and Dharmaraja and Kingswood versus Vidyartha ended in one sided affairs.

Trinity who are the leaders after the completion of the first three rounds came into this game as favourites while S. Thomas’ lying second in the points table went into the game with confidence having notched up three successive wins.

But had Trinity lost all hell would have broken loose as the game was marred by a blunder for which referee Aruna Jayasekera and his touch judges would have had to answer.

Trinity who were trailing 0-10 fought back to plant two tries to make it 10-10 but one of the conversions was disallowed by the referee.

The match was shown live on TV and the slow motion visuals showed the ball clearly sailing over the bar between the two posts. Even the two commentators confirmed it was goaled but Jayasekera who was in the best position to judge the kick disallowed it.

What were the two touch judges doing at that moment. Jayasekera and the two touch judges can consider themselves lucky that the Trinitians scored a try at the last minute of the game to win.

With inter-school rugby having had many conflicts during the past year or two we hope such incidents don’t repeat as it may end in unwarranted events leading to violence as was witness in Kandy last year after the Trinity-Kingswood game.

Back to the game the Trinitians were given a shock by the unpredictable Thomians who took a 7-0 lead and held on till lemons.

They increased the lead through a penalty and seemed to have the game under control.

The two teams at one stage of the match were reduced to 14 players but the Trinitians succeeded in reducing the deficit with a try and followed it up wit another to make it 10-10.

Then came that vital and crucial try in the dying stages of the game for Trinity which upheld their unbeaten tag and the Thomians losing their unbeaten record. So it seems Trinity is the team for the others to beat and it’s left to be seen whether they will be able to maintain their unbeaten record with four matches left to be played.

St Peter’s vs St Anthony’s

St Peter’s though coming back with a win against Kingswood after their defeat to S. Thomas’ has not performed to their full potential. This was evident in the game against St Anthony’s in Kandy. Of course the 13-3 victory is their second straight win but as defending champions they are capable of doing better. The Antonians on the other hand after three successive defeats was not going to be a threat.

Though going down for the fourth time they can be satisfied that they held the Petes to a low score.

With the schools rugby having reached the halfway stage the Petes will have to tighten their belts and take things seriously as they have two more tough games in hand to face against Trinity and Isipathana.

Royal vs Dharmarajah

This game was expected to be a close and interesting tussle due to the fact that the Rajans after their performance against S. Thomas’ were aiming to record their first success.

But it was not to be as the match turned out to be a one sided affair. The Royalists were too good for the Rajans who despite having a better built side was not effective enough to deny a 39-22 win for Royal.

Kingswood vs

Vidyartha

The outcome of this match was known before the game got underway. But was not sure was the winning margin. A half century was expected but Kingswood went a little further notching up 67 points.

St Joseph’s vs

Prince of Wales

The Josephians are having a whale of a time this season as last weekend saw them crush Prince of Wales 37-11. Though they were trailing 10-11 at the breather they settled down and came back to completely outclass their opponents with the minimum of fuss to record their fourth win.

Wesley vs Ananda

This match turned out to be an interesting one as the Anandians started off in style planting two tries with just ten minutes into the first half. They even went on to take the lead during the change over. But the Wesleyites too came back with a vengeance to turn tables and come out victorious 25-17 for their third win.

Mahanama vs Science

Mahanama are also going great guns this season and look a side to be reckoned with. They made mince meat of Science College whom they thrashed 41-12. The Science side had to watch helplessly with Mahanama going on a scoring spree and in the process notching up their third win.

Trinity remain unbeaten defeating Thomians 15-10

Chris Dhambarage

Trinity College Kandy have cleared another huge psychological barrier on their way towards winning the Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league title.

Last week at the Bogambara Stadium they produced a scintillating performance to snatch a thrilling 15 points to 10 points victory over S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia.

Their third successive win in the current season had a great amount of significance because they also regained the Canon R. S. de Saram Shield. But more importantly Trinity College kept their unbeaten record intact and could now face this week’s opponents St. Anthony’s College with a great amount of confidence.

Even then their success was in the balance until the final stages of this absorbing contest before centre three quarter Shamrine Sameem dashed through the tired Thomian defence to score the match winning try. The match was heading towards a ten all draw at one stage after Trinity College had struck twice in the second half.

This was certainly a great comeback from the home side who were trailing 0-7 at half time and were somewhat outclassed during the first 35 minutes of play.

However the Trinitians showed a lot of character during a powerful performance in the second half where they did well to snatch a fantastic victory almost from the jaws of defeat. Never before they have been so much under pressure this season and the game turned out to be a real test of skills and nerves for Trinity College.

They had survived a similar situation in Colombo where they overcame some stiff resistance before overcoming Isipatana College by a convincing margin.

But this time the opposition was even much stronger as the Thomians too went in for this high profile encounter with an unbeaten record and having brought down the defending champions St. Peter’s College in their previous encounter. But Trinity College never gave up hope and stuck to their game plan before adding the finishing touches in a spectacular manner.
St. Peter’s v St. Anthony’s

Defending champions St. Peter’s College scored a morale boosting 13 points to 3 points victory over St. Anthony’s College in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league rugby encounter played at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy.

The Peterites who will take on Vidyartha College this week produced a disciplined performance and cleared their hurdle while scoring a goal and two penalties. This was also their second successive win in the tournament following their 15-7 triumph against Kingswood College Kandy in the previous week.

No doubt the pressure was on the Peterites because the Antonians were capable of making an impact in front of their home crowd. However the lads from Bambalapitiya stuck to their basics and scored an early try trough the experienced Dilshan Paul with Harsha Weerakkody adding the extra pints and also converting two vital penalties.

Even then the scoreline does not clearly indicate their dominance as the Peterites failed to add the finishing touches on a couple of occasions. This was mainly due to some superb spoiling work and solid defence from the Antonians who went down fighting in another close encounter.
Royal v Dharmaraja

Royal College came out with their best performance for the season to beat Dharmaraja College Kandy by 39 points to 22 points in a high scoring Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league rugby encounter worked off at Reid Avenue.

Royal will be satisfied with this effort not only because they scored six tries but they also dominated the proceedings which something they have failed to do so in the previous outings.

But this time they looked more confident and succeeded in penetrating their opponents goal line at regular intervals before winning by a convincing margin at the end.

Royal of course went into this game with the backdrop of some uncertainly because Dharmaraja College had almost beaten S. Thomas’ College in the previous encounter. But the lads from Kandy failed to deliver the same form and struggled to find their touch before making a brief comeback in the second half.

However by that time Royal College had virtually sealed the game in their favour having taken a commanding 25-5 lead mid way in the second half. Nevertheless the Rajans had the satisfaction of scoring three more tries in the latter stages of the game which helped them to earn at least the bonus points.
Kingswood v Vidyartha

Kingswood College made the maximum use of a weak Vidyartha outfit to notch up a massive 67 points to nil victory in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league rugby match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

The Kingswoodians also regained some of their lost prestige following last week’s defeat at the hands of St. Peter’s College while running down a many as eleven tries and converting six of them to complete a rousing victory at the end.
St. Joseph’s v Prince of Wales

St. Joseph’s College cruised to their fourth successive victory while outplaying Prince of Wales College Moratuwa by 37 points to 11 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby match worked off at Longden Place.

The Josephians who are enjoying a fine season this year staged a superb second half rally while scoring one goal and six tries against their opponents one try and two penalties. However St. Joseph’s College were trailing by a solitary point 10-11 at half time but got their act together well in the second half to turn the game in their favour.
Wesley v Ananda

Wesley College came out with a fine performance to beat Ananda College by 25 points to 17 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league tournament match worked off at Longden Place.

The Wesleyites were in a spot of trouble having made an awful start to the game and were trailing 15-17 at half time. But they really made amends with an improved performance in the second half and went on to register their third victory in the current season.
Mahanama v Science College

Mahanama College maintained their impressive record this season while outplaying Science College Mount Lavinia by a convincing margin of 41 points to 12 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league tournament match played at Longden Place.

Mahanama College who are still unbeaten in the tournament got off to a flying start and completed an emphatic victory while collecting their points from three goals and five tries.

The most significant contribution came from their dynamic fly half and play maker Sahan Umagaliya who ran down five splendid tries including a hattrick.

Meanwhile St Joseph’s College will confront St Sylvester’s College in a Singer Division 1B inter-school match to be played at Longdon Place today. The unbeaten Josephians who have already notched up four wins will go all out to record their fifth victory.

They should not find it difficult as the Sylvesterians are yet to make any impression and it’s left to be seen what the final tally of scores would be with St Sylvester’s having lost their matches with big margins.

sipathana who had a rest last weekend will come out today to lock horns with Dharmaraja in a Singer Division 1A inter-school rugby encounter scheduled to be played at Nittawela.

The Havelock Town boys having begun the schools rugby season with a loss to Trinity have settled down and today will be looking for their third win having defeated Royal and St Anthony’s. They will also be striving to better their standing in the points table where they are lying fifth after playing three games. The Isipathanians will have to win the rest of the games with bigger margins to have any chance of reaching the top of the points table.

Dharmaraja on the other hand are having a rough time and this game too will be tough for them. Having already lost all the three games played so far, a loss this time too will see them going back to the lower division next season.

pathana beat rajans 26-0
Kandy Sports Corr.

Isipathana College, Colombo crushed Dharmaraja College by 26 points (3 goals, 1 try) to nil in their Schools Singer Shield Division I Group A rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time Isipathana led 12-0.

Though the Pathans won they were given a torrid time by the Rajans who tackled and stopped their moves.

It was complacency in patches which led the Rajans down allowed their opponents to score especially the last two tries when the Pathans ran unchallenged.

St. Peter’s will confront lowly placed Vidyartha in a Singer Division 1A inter-school rugby encounter at Nittawela today. The Peterites who are coming back into contention after their defeat to the Thomians are sure of chalking up their fourth win.

But if they are to give a challenge to the other teams they will have win the match with a big margin. Presently they are lying jointly second in the points table with the Thomians. They are given the second slot due to a wafer thin difference in the goals and tries scored by the two teams.

Nevertheless the Vidyartha side are undergoing the worst ever rugby season and so far from the three matches they have played they have conceded 156 points to their opponents. They are in for another mauling and the Petes will definitely put in all their effort to rake in many points as possible.

Meanwhile there are three matches down for decision in the Division 1B category today. Two matches are scheduled to be played at Longden Place and the other is due to played at Havelock Park.

At Longden Place Ananda will clash with Prince of Wales and Thurstan will lock horns with Science while the match at Havelock Park will be between Wesley and Lumbini
