St. Joseph’s went on a rampage to rout St Sylvester’s by 56 points to nil in the Singer Division 1B inter-schools rugby encounter at Longdon Place yesterday to record their fifth successive win of the season.

The Sylvesterians had no chance as the Josephians having led 37-0 at the breather, though playing a relaxed game in the second half, accumulated their points through three goals and seven tries. This is the first instance that the Joes have passed the fifty point mark having earlier come close against Science (48) and Prince of Wales (37). Wing three quarter Sachintha Maduranga led the Joes attack and was in full cry as he went over for five of the ten tries they scored with support coming from wing forward Adrian Hakel who made his presence felt in no uncertain terms by scoring two. The other three tries came from fly half Shanaka Pietersz, wing three quarter Navin Abeyratne and hooker Himasha Gunawardena with Shanaka Pietersz converting three of these tries.

The Josephians have three more matches to play and their next two games against Thurstan and Lumbini are bound to be cake-walks with the final encounter against Mahanama who are also unbeaten so far will most probably be the decider who will be the leader and champion of the Division 1B category.

Ananda College will be hoping to bounce back when they take on Prince of Wales College Moratuwa in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match at Longden Place today.

The Anandians had a tough assignment last week where they went down to Wesley College 17-25 at the same venue. But this time they have a good chance of redeeming their lost prestige and to register their third victory in the current season.

The Anandians are currently placed fifth in the latest points table and should be able to climb further up with an improved performance in today's outing.

Ananda College of course will need to produce a much better performance because the Cambrians are capable of staging an upset having made steady progress in their last few outings.

Last week too the Anandians simply threw away the game after having dominated the first half where they took a close 17-15 lead at half time but committed too many mistakes during the latter stages which really cost them the game.

Prince of Wales College are currently placed sixth in their latest points table with just a solitary win to their credit.

Meanwhile Wesley College will be hoping to maintain their impressive record this season when they confront Lumbini MV in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match at Havelock Park today.

The Wesleyites are in a confident mood after having defeated Ananda College 25-17 in their previous encounter last week. They are also in contention for the league title and are currently placed third in the latest points table with three wins to their credit from four outings.

Wesley College should be able to pile up a big score and also collect more bonus points as their opponents Lumbini MV are yet to make an impact in the current season and are placed at the bottom of the latest points table.

Thurstan College will hoping to register their second win this season when they take on Science College Mount Lavinia in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match at Longden Place today.

Thurstan College are placed fourth in the points table with one win, one loss and one drawn match to their credit from three outings. They certainly have a great chance of improving their track record as Science College are still searching for their maiden victory in the current season.

St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya ran riot against a hapless Vidyartha College when they beat them by 77 points (7 goals, 5 tries, 1 penalty) to 3 (1 penalty) in their schools Singer Shield Division Group A rugby tournament match played at Nittawala yesterday. At half time the Peterites led 17-3.

Vidyartha College did well to hold the strong Peterites to a comparatively small lead in the initial half. In fact it was Vidyartha who opened scoring in the third minute of play through a penalty fired by fly half Tharaka Dissanayake but thereafter failed to score but allowed their opponents to run up 77 points.

In fact the flood gates were opened in the second as the Peterites piled up 60 points through some effortless tries. Five of them were over 45 metre runs and two of them covered over 60 metres by winger Gerald Canute and centre Dilshan Paul.

Vidyartha College put up a Pathetic display as they failed to keep a tag on their opponents who punched huge holes in their defence. At times they looked like passengers and did not try to stop their opponents from scoring. In fact the last 20 minutes of play produced 45 points.

To add to their misery six of Vidyartha players limped off the field due to injuries and the junior ruggerites who replaced them could not cope with the pressure exerted by the Peterites especially in the second half.

This score of 77 by the Peterites is the highest so far this season beating the 67-0 by Kingswood College against Vidyartha College last Sunday.

Try scores for the Peterites were winger Gerald Canute (3 tries), No. 8 Ishan Noor (3 tries), centre Dilshan Paul (2 tries), winger Rishitha Peiris (2 tries), centre Keith Gurusinghe (1 try), prop Roshan Fonseka (1 try).

Fly half Harsha Weerakkody goalled 6 tries and put over the penalty and the other try was converted by centre Keith Gurusinghe. D. Nimal refereed.

S. Thomas' College will be hoping to redeem some of their lost prestige when they scrum down with Kingswood College Kandy in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One 'Group A' league rugby tournament match at Mount Lavinia today.

The Thomians are still recovering following last week's 10-15 shock defeat which they suffered at the hands of Trinity College at the Bogambara Stadium.

In contrast Kingswood College will take the field with a great amount of confidence after having routed their home town rivals Vidyartha College by a huge margin of 67 points to nil in their previous outing.

This annual fixture will also turn out to be a contest between the Ibrahim brothers Ronnie and Niloufer who will be in charge of S. Thomas' College and Kingswood College respectively.

The match will no doubt be an emotional affair for Ronnie Ibrahim who had a successful schools rugby career at Kingswood College where he represented the team with distinction as a fly half and later functioned as the coach of his alma mater from 2003 to 2006.

This time his opposite number will be his youngest brother Niloufer Ibrahim who has shifted from Dharmaraja College to his former school Kingswood College from this season. Ronnie and Niloufer of course never played together for Kingswood but they are certain to unleash the same tactics in their attempt to win the match.

In fact Kingswood College have brought in three new faces and have also made a couple of positional changes following their setback against the defending champions St. Peter's College two week's ago.

Second row forward Chetiya Wadugodapitiya, scrum half Mohamed Apsal and Winger Prabath Jayalath are the new players who will make their maiden appearance in today's vital game.

S. Thomas' College will field the same team but their coach Ronnie Ibrahim is expecting an improved performance after some vital mistakes cost them last week's match against Trinity College.

The two teams are locked with 13 points each with three victories and are quite aware that another defeat would completely dash their hopes of making any further progress in the tournament. The teams:

S. Thomas': Rajindra Gunasekera, Janith Jayasuriya, Amrith Anrado, Bevan Hallock, Ramesh Perera, Jeewaka Hewawitharana, Tariq Jayasuriya, Rohitha Rajapaksa (captain), Manjith Amangama and Dinuka Ranasinghe, Shaveen Kapuwatte, Niluk Wickrematilleke, Heshan Gunaratne, Sumith Kalupatina, Jeromy Fernando.

Kingswood: Harindra Dharmawardena, Mohamed Iswan, Uchitha Jayasundera, Chetiya Wadugodapitiya, Rajitha Abeykoon, Himal Dhanaratne, Nuwan Dharshana, Gayan Rathnage (captain), Mohamed Apsal and Roshan Weeraratne, Chamindu Bandara, Kasun Wijesuriya, Eranda Ranaweera, Prabath Jayalath, Rajitha Sansoni.

RUGBY: Kingswood College delivered a stunning blow as they brought down S. Thomas' College by 29 points to 7 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league rugby tournament match played at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

The former champions playing their first game in Colombo collected their points from three goals, one try and one penalty after having led 15 nil at half time. S. Thomas' College managed to score just a solitary goal.

The Kingswoodians were able to grab the initiative following some real hard work from their dynamic set of forwards and backed up by the speedy three quarters. They had certainly done their home work and were well prepared to counter their opponents threatening moves with some good spoiling work.

But more importantly Kingswood College had a game plan and they rose to the occasion with a magnificent all round performance. They seem to have studied their opponent's strength and weakness well and were quick to pounce on any Thomian mistakes.

The Kingswood forwards played a well organized game and they made certain that they retain possession for a long period. As a result they were able to cause a great amount of damage to the opposition psychologically by earning more penalties.

Kingswood of course went into this important game with their heads high having notched up the second biggest victory in the current season where they routed home town rivals Vidyartha College by a massive margin of 67 points to nil last week.

They were able to carry on with that same form despite performing away from home and cruised to their fourth victory in the tournament.

They had plenty of good ball and every time they were able to add pressure on the opposition through some neat and clean collections in the line outs and set pieces.

Kingswood College opened scoring with a superb penalty from their reliable place kicker and fly half Roshan Weeraratne who in fact had an outstanding game while converting three of their four tries.

Kingswood scored twice before half time through centre Chamindu Bandara and their number eight and captain Gayan Rathnage who led the pack quite beautifully while also initiating several scoring opportunities.

Rathnage added one more try to his tally in the second half with winger Eranda Ranaweera scoring their fourth try of the match. Scrum half Ammangama scored a consolation try for S. Thomas' College.

Referee: Dilroy Fernando.

Kingswood back on track...

think Kingswood team is back in track to regain the League title after a year...All they have to do is win the lats 3 games and that is against Issipathana, Dharmarajah & Trinity.

I personally believe that the game against Isspathana in Colombo and the game agains the ONLY Unbeaten team so far-Trinity would be tough asks but should get through.. and the Kingswood 2008 team would reagin the possition of Kings of Sri Lankan Schools rugby...

Mahanama a key contender for the Singer Division 1B inter-school rugby league title will confront Ananda at Longden Place today. Mahanama who have already chalked up three wins and are still unbeaten should have little difficulty in brushing aside the Ananda challenge. A win will not be sufficient for Mahanama which will be their fourth as they will have to step up their points further as leaders St. Joseph’s are on top with 188 points as against 131 to Mahanama who too are unbeaten with five consecutive wins. The Anandians on the other hand have been inconsistent. In the previous game they were shocked by Prince of Wales who beat them 24-11 and today’s game is going to be a tough one for them as Mahanama are in top form. It is left to be seen whether they could prevent their opponents from going on a rampage. Meanwhile Science and Lumbini will clash in another encounter of the same contest prior to this game at the same venue. The two teams have not been able to make any impression this season and are occupying the eighth and ninth slots respectively. This encounter is not of any significance as nothing can prevent the two teams from being demoted to the lower division next season. The only consolation will be that one of them will end the season with a win. - MSA
