mahanama beat ananda 26-24
It was an exciting game where the lead was fluctuating between the 2 teams at regular intervals.

Mahanama drew first blood when Chathura Shanaka scored a try. Mithun Shamen and Sahan Umagiliya scored the other tries for Mahanama College. Thusith Fonseka, Niresh Chathuranga (2 tries), Ishan Samith for Ananda.

Mahanama led 14-10 at the breather.

Ananda should have pulled out a victory over here if Anuradha Mapatuna had converted the penalty right in front of the post in the dying stages of the game.

Mahanama: 3 goals, 1 try
Ananda: 2 goals, 2 tries

Trinity who are unbeaten so far with four wins out of four and defending champions St Peter’s will clash in a crucial game of the Singer Division 1A inter-school rugby tournament at Pallekelle today with the kick at 4.30 p.m.

This will be an acid test for the two teams as Trinity will go all out to maintain their unbeaten record and make a stronger claim in their quest for the 2008 league title while St. Peter’s will go all out to tarnish their opponents record and look forward to retain the title for the third year.

Looking back at the performances of the two teams since the league tournament began last month, Trinity though beginning their campaign on a successful note with a win over Isipathana in the first game (whom they beat 29-10) the matches they played thereafter have not been that easy for the Kandy lads.

Apart from the 60-09 win against Vidyartha they just managed to scrape through in defeating S. Thomas’ 15-10 and St. Anthony’s 25-24 of which both were achieved in the dying stages. So in today’s game they will be confronting a side which has been the schools league champs for the last two years and the Lions cannot afford to make mistakes like they made in the previous encounters as the Petes will coming into the game hell bent on gaining their lost prestige.

The Peterites on the other hand though they started off the season with a bang defeating Dharmarajah 46-0 met their Waterloo in the next match at the hands of S. Thomas’. But since then it seems that they have settled down and remedied their mistakes and now are playing the way that is expected from them.

Since that defeat to S. Thomas’ the Petes have gone on to record three successive wins against Kingswood 15-07, St. Anthony’s 13-03 and Vidyartha 77-03. As mentioned earlier this game is going to be very crucial to both the sides as St. Peter’s have accumulated 170 points from five matches while Trinity, though playing a game less, has only 129 points to the credit.

A defeat for either is going to spell doom for the rest of the season. With Kingswood right behind these two teams it’s going to be tough for them and another factor is that Trinity has yet to play Kingswood with whom they will clash in the last league encounter during the third week of June.

In conclusion the two teams are aware of the importance of this game but provided the game is incident free, this match is definitely going to be a blockbuster, so keep your fingers crossed and the ultimate winner is not going to be that easy to predict.

Dharmraja vs Vidyartha

There is another match of the same tournament down for decision today which is also played in Kandy between wooden spoonists Dharmarajah and Vidyartha at Nittawela. This will be of no significance at all as it will be a consolation for whoever wins the game but the scale is in favour of the Rajans.

Wesley vs POW

Wesley will lock horns with Prince of Wales in a Singer Division 1B inter-school rugby encounter at Longden Place today. Wesley with four wins from five matches are favoured to pull off the game as they are also in contention for the Division 1B title along with St. Joseph’s and Mahanama.

The Cambrians on the other hand created a major upset last week when they defeated fancied Ananda and will be looking forward for a repeat of that performance. But the Wesleyites are a much tougher opposition and they will have pull out all their resources if they are to achieve that.

Prince of Wales holds Wesley to 15 all draw

Prince of Wales put up a sterling performance against Wesley as they fought back after being led 5-10 at the breather to hold them to a 15 all draw in their Singer Division 1B inter-school rugby encounter played at Longden Place yesterday.
Wesley who were fancied to pull off this game did not play to their potential with the Cambrians taking up whatever challenge that came their way. The Wesleyites came into the game having won four of their five matches as against the Cambrians who had only two wins from four outings.

The two teams accumulated their points in identical fashion of one goal, one try and a penalty. Though Wesley led at lemons the Cambrians surprised them by taking the lead at 12-10 during the half way stage of the second half.

But finally it ended to the satisfaction of the Cambrian XV.

For Wesley fly half Asward Aniff and hooker Janith Lakshitha scored the tries with Dulaj Perera converting one. He also booted over the penalty while No 8 Dushan Honnantara and fly half Anushka Uththala scored the tries for the Cambrians with Uththala putting over the conversion and the penalty.

The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association (SLSRA) has been instructed by the Education Ministry to take action that may be deemed necessary against Isipathana College for fielding an illegitimate player against Dharmaraja in their inter-school rugby match played in Kandy last week.

The player has been identified as K. A. D. Sajith Saranga by the Education Ministry in its letter to the the SLSRA.

Before the match Dharmaraja protested over the presence of three players whom they claimed were illegitimate but after an investigation by the Education Ministry it was discovered that only one player, Saranga, had violated the rules.

Saranga according to the Education Ministry’s director of physical education and sports L. K. Jayaweera had failed his exam and was not eligible to be in school or part of its rugby team.

Interestingly the head of the SLSRA K. A. D. Punydasa is also the Principal of Isipathana.

In 1991 Isipathana were suspended from the schools rugby championship for fielding an illegitimate player.

The game was played in a very muddy condition due to heavy rain on the day. Thomians drew first blood when Devan Hallock scored an unconverted try and they led 12-0 at lemons.

Thomians were 17-0 at one time but Isipathana fought back hard to score 15 points in the 2nd half. Isipathana scored a try in the last minute of the game to make it 17-15 and Isipathana skipper Dinusha Chathuranga tried hard but failed to make the conversion which could have drawn the match.

Devan Hallock, Rohitha Rajapakse and Niluk Wickrematilleke scored tries for St. Thomas.

St. Thomas: 1 goal, 2 tries
Isipathana: 1 goal, 1 try, 1 drop goal
