it doeznt matter its win or loose. @ the end of the day the game should be the winner.. there is a some kind of true that all the referees has cheated in the favor of STC throughout this season specially in the games against St. Peters & Trinity. Obviously is i b'coz this is the last season of Prince rajapakse 's can take a part in skools rugby arena.

how evr Isipathana doesn't have a right to put the blame on referee, because they have clearly breech the regulations by adding a player in to 1st XV side who couldn't pass mathematics in OL examination. In 1970 ''s there was a major allegation for Isipathana cause of some overage players who played for college 1st XV @ dat time

St. Peter’s tarnish Trinity’s hitherto unbeaten record

    By M. Shamil Amit

The completion of last week’s matches in the Singer inter-schools league rugby tournament saw some interesting results. The best was the much looked forward to encounter between table leaders for the last three weeks Trinity and defending champions St. Peter’s which was played in Kandy.

The encounter was crucial for both teams and the final outcome saw the Peterites tarnishing the unbeaten record of Trinity in a thrilling match. Trinity despite going down to the Petes managed to hang on to the lead for yet another week.

But the coming weeks are going to be crucial for the top three teams - Trinity, St Peter’s and Kingswood. Trinity and Kingswood have three more matches to play with the two teams sheduled to clash next month.

St. Peter’s have only two more games. So the three teams are in a must win situation and one loss for either will put paid to their chances of advancing. So now the season has reached an interesting stage and the coming weeks is going to be decisive for the top three teams.

In the other matches that were played S. Thomas’ pipped Isipathana, Royal outclassed St. Anthony’s while Dharmarajah recorded their first win of the season defeating Vidyartha. Meanwhile in the Division 1B category St. Joseph’s are well away with six wins out of six and are almost assured of promotion to the top division. They have two more games to play with one against Mahanama who are in a must win situation with the third team Wesley also in the same plight.

    Trinity vs St. Peter’s

The Trinitians came with their heads high having notched up four consecutive wins while the rejuvenated Peterites were coming into the game with the intention of spoiling the Lions party and this is just what they did as they tamed the Lions in their own den.

Though the game was a low scoring affair the ingredients of a fitting finale was there. But this time the last minute luck was not there in favour of the Lions which saw them recording wins over S. Thomas’ and St. Anthony’s.

The Peterites might have had this planned as the Trinitians found it hard to pierce through the stonewall defence of the Petes. Though the scoring margin was low what mattered for the Peterites was the win, which they were were looking for.

They played to a game plan and they meant business when making the first try - just five minutes from the start and followed it up with a penalty to take a 10-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. Trinity came back and succeeded in decreasing the Petes lead through a try and 10-5 remained the half time score.

Penalties missed are a wasted opportunity. That’s what happened to the Petes when the game resumed and in the process denied them the chance to put the Lions under pressure. The Lions taking advantage of this lapse continued to fight back and succeeded, to the utter dismay of the Peterite supporters, to make it 10-10.

The Peterites were undeterred and from there on they had the Trinitians under control. They never gave their opponents any chance of making any headway. The second half try by the Petes ( after 20 minutes) put more pressure on the Lions.

But the Peterites played a cool game and succeeded in fulfilling their mission and now for sure they are not going to be “push overs” anymore and will go all out to take the league title for the third year.

    S.Thomas’ vs Isipathana

It was lady luck for the Thomians as they managed to just pip the Isipathanians by two points to come out victorious at 17-15. The crucial conversion missed by Isipathana’s place kicker saw them crashing to their second defeat.

In the end the Thomians cannot be happy with their performance due to this fact. Going by the capabilities of the two teams that they were having a healthy 12-0 lead at lemons. Having further increased the lead by another five points on resumption they failed to take advantage of it.

The Isipathanians taking note of this lapse began, slowly but surely, to creep near the Thomian score. Like a busy snail they accumulated the points and got closer while the Thomians seemed to be falling back. A try two minutes from finish, the Pathanas were almost on the verge of making it a draw and that crucially missedl conversion put paid their chances.

    Royal vs St. Anthony’s

The Royalists who began the season on a sour note losing their first two games seems to have settled down at least for the time being. The 25-12 defeat they handed over the Antonians could have been more.

The conversions they fluffed are vital in any game. If those were penalties offered then in a crucial game it’s going to cost them a lot. With the Bradby Shield just two weeks away they cannot afford to make mistakes of this nature. Bad luck to the Antonians who crashed to their sixth successive defeat of the season.

    Dharmrajah vs Vidyartha

Dharmarajah saw the winning post at last with a crushing 43-0 win over Vidyartha. Hopefully the Rajans would be hoping this would also not be the last. But even such a thing cannot prevent them from being demoted.

    St Joseph’s vs

    Thurstan

There is no stopping the Josephians who are having a whale of a time this season. They cruised to their sixth successive victory by inflicting a 24-7 defeat to the Thurstanites. With two matches remaining they are assured of another win which is against Lumbini MV. However if they want eight out of eight, then they will have to overcome the tough game which is against second placed Mahanama.

    Mahanama vs Ananda

It was a narrow escape for Mahanama against Ananda whom they pipped by just two points 26-24.

Thanks to an easy penalty fluffed by Ananda they were able to keep their unbeaten tag. But they have two tough games to look forward to which is against Wesley and St. Joseph’s. So keep your fingers crossed.

    Wesley vs Prince of Wales

Wesley after being held to 15-15 draw by Prince of Wales has put them in an awkward position. This is going to cost them too much if they are looking forward to go up the ladder.

They are in a must win situation with matches against Mahanama and Thurstan remaining to be played. This week’s game against Mahanama will see where they are heading and their much looked forward to progress to the top.

Noted ur comments. Sorry I misqouted you. Your right we should not judge Saranga until case is closed. I heard he has passed exams but the ministry said it was not sufficient bla bla bla. Why people jump on Pathana is because they have commited simmilar offences in the past. H/ever like you said we should wait and see. Pathana Thora match always has great rivalry. Back in the 70's and early 90's this used to be the clash of the Titans.

Mahanama College created a major upset as they defeated the more fancied Wesley College team by 14 points to 5 points in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

After a scoreless first half Mahanama College opened out the game in the second half and collected their points from two goals with the Wesleyites responding with a solitary try.

However it was Wesley College who opened scoring shortly after the interval with hooker Janitha Lakshitha scoring a good push over try. Mahanama College hit back strongly few minutes later with centre Mithun Hapugoda scoring a spectacular try under the post after having covered nearly 75 metres.

Mahesh Kumaranayake added the extra points to give Mahanama College a close 7-5 lead mid way in the second half. They virtually sealed the game five minutes before the final whistle with winger Chatura Shanaka going over the line following a five metre scrum.

Centre Kumaranayake again made no mistake with the conversion and Mahanama College ran out victorious 14-5 to keep their unbeaten record intact. Aruna Jayasekera refereed.
    Cambrians win

In the second match of the day played at the same venue Prince of Wales College Moratuwa scored a comfortable 34 points to 10 points victory over Science College in another Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match.

The Cambrians collected their points from two goals and four tries while Science College responded with one goal and one penalty. Nazeem Mohamed refereed.

Meanwhile St. Joseph?s College will be looking to register their seventh successive victory this season when they take on Lumbini MV in their Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group B league rugby tournament match at Longden Place today.

The Josephians are enjoying a splendid season and are well on course towards winning the Division One Group B league title having swept aside all their opponents quite convincingly in the previous six outings.

Thurstan College, Colombo crushed St. Sylvester's College, Kandy by 27 points (1 goal, 1 try, 5 penalties) to 12 (4 penalties) in their schools Singer Shield Division one Group 'B' rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time Thurstanites led 15-6.

The man behind the success of Thurstan College was their fly half Lahiru Dasun who was responsible for all the points scored by them.

For St. Sylvester's College full back J.M. Piyar converted four penalties. But the Sylvesterians made a lot of mistakes and gave away penalties.

They also dropped passes at crucial stages. With fever defeats under their belts. They will have to win their next two games to avoid being demoted to lower division.

Mahanama put in a plucky display in the second half to inflict a close 14-5 win over Wesley in a crucial Singer Division 1B inter-school rugby encounter played at Longden Place yesterday.

In the process the rejuvenated Mahanama side coasted to their fifth win from six matches. With no scoring in the first half the winners made up their points through two goals as against a try by Wesley.

The two sides came into the game looking forward for a promotion to the top division next season. The Wesleyites were in a must win situation as they had already lost a game as against Mahanama who were yet to be beaten with four wins and a draw from five matches.

With this win Mahanama are almost assured of their promotion. They have two more games remaining to play against Prince of Wales and St Joseph’s from which one win would be sufficient.

The first half was filled with missed opportunities for the two sides. The winning margin of Mahanama would have been more provided they had not spill two scoring chances.

The two sides even failed to boot over the penalty that was offered. Wesley fluffed it the sixth minute while Mahanama did so in the dying stages of the first half with this session ending with no score for either side.

On resumption the Wesleyites seemed to have rallied as they played with more understanding and cohesion. They succeeded in penetrating their opponents’ territory and forcing a five metre scrum hooker Janitha Lakshitha went over for a try but again centre Azward Aniff who fluffed the penalty failed to add the extra points.

Wesley propped up by this success continued their attack but a silly mistake just ten metres opposite the Mahanama goal saw them misjudge a pass and the Mahanama forwards taking advantage of it worked the line.

Second centre Mithun Shamen after receiving the ball sprinted more than 65 metres to score under the post with centre Mahesh Kumaranayake making no mistake with the conversion.

This was a try that could have been averted but the Wesleyite players were not active with no one making any effort to tackle and this has been their problem since the season began.

The second try scored by Mahanama was almost the same as the first one as the Wesleyites fumbled with the ball close to their goal post with wing three quarter Chathura Shanaka grabbing it to score under the post giving Kumaranayake an easy conversion.

    Referee : Aruna Jayasekera .

Kingswood College Kandy will be hoping to consolidate their position in the Premier League when they take on the formidable Isipatana College team in a key Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A rugby tournament match at Havelock Park today.

The Kingswoodians will be returning back after a well earned one week rest and with their morale high having brought down S. Thomas' College 29-7 in their previous outing at Mount Lavinia.

This means that the former 'A' division league champions will be playing their second successive match away from home. This game is even more important for Kingswood College who are one of the three teams in contention for the league title. In contrast Isipatana College will be hoping to redeem some of their lost prestige following a disappointing effort last week where they went down fighting 15-17 to S. Thomas' College at Mount Lavinia.

This time of course they will need to produce an improved performance as the Kingswoodians are a determined lot having already notched up four impressive victories. Isipatana however will have the home advantage and will be looking to put up a good performance with the conditions too very much in favour of them. Last week they just could not run the ball under wet conditions and it was a creditable achievement at least for them to reduce the margin to two points.

Kingswood College are currently on par with both the defending champions St. Peter's College and Trinity College with all three teams having lost one game each and the bonus points separating them.

The table leaders St. Joseph's College moved closer towards winning the Singer Division One Group B league title completely outplaying Lumbini MV by a huge margin of 82 points to nil in their inter school under 20 rugby tournament match worked off at Longden Place yesterday.

The Josephians also cruised to their seventh successive victory this season while collecting their points from six goals and eight tries after having led 41 nil at half time in a completely one sided encounter.

In addition St. Joseph?s College completed 50 tries in the tournament during this match and now they are just two penalties away from topping the three hundred point mark having conceded only 34 points to their opponents.

Dynamic wing three quarter Sachintha Maduranga led the try feast while crossing their opponent's goal line on as many as eight occasions during a dazzling performance. In the process he also had the honour of completing a hat trick of tries for the second time in the current inter school season.

Second winger Naveen Abeyratne also made a fine impact scoring three superb tries while second row forward Dilan Rambukwella, Dhanuka Anthony and Dananjaya Silva scored a try each for the winners.

Their regular place kicker Shanaka Pietersz also had a fine game when he converted four tries and Sachintha Maduranga added the extra points to two tries. Upul Silva refereed. C.D

Trinity College will take on their home town rivals Dharmaraja College in an interesting Schools Singer Shield Division One Group A rugby tournament match at Trinity College Stadium at Pallekelle today at 4.30 p.m.

The Trinitians who were unbeaten up to last week lost to St. Peter's College last week in their first appearance at Pallekelle their home grounds this season.

Trinity will have to win this match if they are to keep their chances alive in winning the league which has been now thrown wide open with St. Peter's and Kingswood also in the running. But what will be most important for Trinity will be a win today will boost up their morale for the leg of the Bradby Shield match against Royal College which will be played in Colombo next week.

On the other hand the Rajans after an unimpressive start, have displayed remarkable improvement in their first year in this segment.
