Royal College, Colombo take on St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya at the Royal College sports Complex in a Singer inter-school rugby encounter today. The kick off is scheduled at 4.30 pm.

On paper, the Peterites have a definite edge over their rivals from Colombo-7. They come into the game as a very confident outfit having beaten top contenders Trinity College, Kandy in their previous outing. The burly eight of St. Peter’s has dominated most of the packs in the arena and they will be pitted against an equally strong set of forwards which will provide a very interesting battle.

Royal College on the other hand is by far the underdog in this match. They however managed to put up a splendid performance in their previous outing against St. Anthony’s, Katugastota in a match, which they dominated right from the start with perfect coordination between the line and the pack. They were a rejuvenated outfit and a far cry from the mediocre performances they put up in the previous matches.

The Royalists will have to put pressure form the start on the boys from Bambalapitiy and the first half will be vital to both teams.

The teams are very much even on paper though it might be otherwise on form but the lads from Reid Avenue just might have a surprise in store for the defending champions. This will indeed be the battle of the ‘forwards’ and will boil down to very powerful play in sets. The Peterite eight have been the most powerful in this aspect of the game but The Royalist after the previous outing seem to have understood the role of each player.

Sri Lanka Youth cap Bilal Hassen and Nikira Senanyake will have to be the difference in the match if Royal are going to have any chance of winning. Royal will be boosted by the presence of their vice-captain and flamboyant fly half Naren Dhason who was out the entire season due to an injury. It will be interesting to see how Royal use him.

The Peterites therefore will have no walk in the park and they will have to make amends to the unwanted handling errors they made in their outing against Trinity.

The Peterites have the services of fly half Harsha Weerakody who has played a vital role in their success story. Much will also depend on the Centre Dilshan Paul and pack leader Ihsan Noor who has bulldozed many an opponent with rough power play. The Royalists will have to dominate loose play and the game may well be a test of supremacy for the forwards of both teams. It will be a battle that is definitely worth watching.

Royal beat St. Peter’s – 17-12
St. Peter’s unexpectedly lost to Royal and the Peterites hope to retain the Singer Group “A” title for 3 successive years faded away.

Royalist led 10-5 at lemons.

It was a revenge by Royal who were thrashed by Peterites 41-0 when they met last year in the same league tournament.

Await more info…

Schools Rugby Season 2008 has been the most competive season ever....If you had taken Vidyartha out from A Div this year... the rest of the Teams, Kingswood, Trinity, St. Peters, Issipathana, St. Thomas, Royal , Anthony's & Dharmarajah are beeing playing some superb Rugby this season so far.. and the order above may likely be the end of season league standing as per my understanding on the current season.

Its true that all cannot win and that is where Kingswood & Trinity stay on top this far...becos they hung their nerves till the last minnute with several close call games being won by both these 2 teams.... But other games have also been so close and decisive and means that schools rugby have improved so much over the years....well done to all of the teams.. Even to Anthony's & DRCK...

Vidyartha needs to work hard next year to be able to get promoted back again to A Div. and it will be interesting to know who will join them to go back to B div - whether SACK or DRCK?

However, One thing to Notice is that there are 8 schools who play very good rugby consistantly.. Namely, Kingswood, Trinity (Shows obvious why they were the first schools to take rugby in SL) along with Peters, Pathana, STC , Royal....SACK and I can put Wesley in to this category too even though they had a bad patch last year...The other teams are so inconsistant and are no major players in the big league..

Even out of the said 8 teams, I will still put 4 schools right on top of having greatest of performances in the last 5 years, namely Kingswood, Trinity, St.Peters & Issipathana...I think They will still be the top 4 teams this year too in that same order at the end of the season....

Royal tails will be very high now going in to the Bradby for sure.. On the other hand Trinity are playing away this game and one might think that Trinity peaked a little too early this season...and their last 4 games have been just dropping... but for Kingswood... it been an uphill all the time ever since they lost to St. Peters, they have been growing with confidence...

So put that together, yes trinity may loose to Royal. But the last game of the season on 22nd June, Kingswood may still beat Trinity and that sorts out a clear champion and the runner-up gets poised evenly....

Machang I gather your list of best teams is only for this decade, right ? However, if you take it for All Time it would be Trinity, S,Thomas', Issipathana and Royal as the Top 4 followed by S.Peters, Kingswood and S.Anthonys.

Sorry mate... I will agree on Trinity at 1 but then,... who has played More rugby in schools areana? Kingswood started in 1895.. (114 yrs before) and Trinity in 1906...(102 yrs now). Then comes Royal & Thora which just crossed 75 yrs mark...Bradby is still in its 60's.... Issipathana cellebrated 50 years on Rugby 6 yrs ago... SACk celebrated 50 yrs of Rugby 2 yrs ago... St peters have played over 60 yrs... Wesley played over 75 yrs...

But if you take who has won most of the matches? then we may ask our Grandfathers first, then our fathers.. and then you and me (of course.. I am from 1994 so I may know a bit more than you on the history mate)...Kigswood realized that they can be the champions of SL Rugby only in the year 1999...when they became the B div Champs and went on the take the President's trophy.. and again they set back one year but since 2001, they were vertually unbeatable (Beaten only 7 times through out the 6 yrs since then on 15's as well as on 7's) Their 15 a side was unbeaten over 5 years at a streatch since 2002 to 2005.. and then they lost a game each every other year which cost them the league in 2006 & 2007... and both times to St Peters and last year to Trinity...
However,...they are still a power to recon with and this time for sure, Kingwood has the best chance of regaining the league from Peters after a lapse of 2 years.. which will happen on 22nd June....at Bogambara.. where the 2 oldest schools ever to have played Rugby in SL meet...

FYI, we at Kingswood did simple things right.. when we fired the coach in 2000,.. we had no choices but to go with some expertiees... and Iqram Odeyar (ex Trinity) let us down halfway through leaving our then u-18 coach Ronnie Ibrahim to take over as the Kings had no option.. Ronnie was a tremendous success untill he was beaten in the mid season 2006 by Sanath Martis's master brain st.Peters at Royal complex..and that was the downfall as he was already approached by Thomians to take over... MR tried to beat Kings with Namal, & Yoshitha.. they failed... they took over our coach but we recruited his younger brother (The best Utililty player ever seen in SL rugby) Nilufer. and even with Ronnie with Thora, Rohan couldnot win against Kings either...
We dont spent millions of Ruppes for the rugby team but yet we ensure that they look smart and nice with all basic requirements fullfilled... and mind you they still eat Kos & Del and Manyokka with the Hostel Soup, Meat and eggs,.after prcatices..and NOT Chocolate, energizers, Milk...and Pills...

Now its time for Nilufer's success times with Kingswood.....

Lets stick to the point of discussion. It was who are the all time greats in Schools rugby and not about the Kingswood diet and mayokka. Let me also enlighten you that we dont have to ask our fathers and grandfathers about who won matches in the past, the records are available and are updated every year. So dont talk unless you have the proper facts. Also you may have played in 1994 I played in Champion Thora teams of 89 and 90 ....both unbeaten years. They went on to be unbeaten the following year as well which made it 3 in a row. No school has ever equaled this record during which time they WON 43 matches on the trot.No draws. Kingswood was unbeaten 2003 -2005. However 2003 they were B division. So only 2004 -05 are counted by the authorities. They also had a draw in each of those years.
Now I stated earlier that Kingswood has been the team of this decade. No question with only Petes giving them a run. But all time they are not in the top 4. We cant let our emotions blind the facts. Just because a team started playing before another does not make them better. What matters is results and achievements. Look at Pathana and Thora. They started rugby in 1960 and 1956 respectively. Yet they have won more titles in A division schools rugby than any other school.
FYI THESE ARE THE FACTS SINCE 1950'S WHEN MORE THAN 5 - 10 SCHOOLS STARTED PLAYING RUGBY.
UNBEATEN TEAMS : TCK 11 STC 10 IMV 9 ROYAL 9 KINGSWOOD 2 SACK 2 SPC 1.
(NOTE TRINITY, PETERS AND ZAHIRA HAD SOME UNBEATEN YEARS IN THE 1930'S WHEN ONLY 4 SCHOOLS PLAYED RUGBY)
A DIVISION LEAGUE CHAMPIONS ( OFFICIAL AND UN OFFICIAL):
STC 13 IMV 10 TCK 9 ROYAL 9 SPC 5 KINGSWOOD 2 SACK 1.
PRESIDENTS TROPY KO: IMV 7 STC 5 KINGSWOOD 4 SPC 3 ROYAL 2 TCK 2 THURSTAN 1.

There those are the facts.Trinity Thora Royal Peters and IMV have always kept these records in their archives. Also just to let you know Kingswood started playing first in 1897. However they gave up in 1909. They came back in 1964.
I will post the actual school Rugby History doc on ela in stages as it is too big for 1 post.
