Petes, Patans out to redeem lost pride

Chris Dhambarage

The reigning 'A' division league champions St. Peter's College will figure in a grudge battle with Isipatana College in their Singer inter school under 20 rugby tournament match at Havelock Park today.
Both teams will be hoping to salvage their pride and to redeem some of their lost prestige following their disappointing performances in the previous outings.
The Peterites suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Royal College last week that virtually shattered their hopes of regaining the title for the second successive year.
Isipatana College too went through a similar experience as they missed a golden opportunity before going down fighting 3-6 against Kingswood College Kandy last week.
This will be another great chance for Isipatana College to bounce back into recognition with an improved performance ahead of the knock out championships. Their performances this season have been pretty ordinary with only three victories to their credit.
Isipatana of course showed signs of challenging some of the other top teams in the league when they notched up three successive victories against Royal College St.
Anthony's College and Dharmaraja College respectively. St. Peter's too will be looking for an improved performance because this will be their final game in the league tournament before confronting their traditional rivals St. Joseph's College in their Battle of the Saints annual encounter.

Thomians face acid test against Joes

Chris Dhambarage

S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia will face an acid test when they take on the unbeaten St. Joseph's College side in their annual inter school rugby encounter for the Lady Jayatilleke Shield at Longden Place today.

The Josephians are enjoying a splendid season where they have made a clean sweep while winning all seven matches in the Singer under 20 Division One Group B league tournament.

In the process St. Joseph's College have also established two new records in the current season. They defeated Lumbini MV by a massive margin of 82 points to nil to register the biggest victory this season while their wing three quarter Sachintha Maduranga is the leading try scorer with a total of 20 tries to his credit.

St. Joseph's College are now just six points away from reaching the 300 mark this season and they have conceded a mere 34 points to their opponents from their seven outings.

They are confident that they could regain the Lady Jayatilleke Shield this time as they have vastly improved their skills and strategies in all aspects of the game. In contrast S. Thomas' College are currently placed fifth in the latest points table of the Singer inter school under 20 Division One Group A league tournament.

However they will take the field with a great amount of confidence after having recorded one of the biggest victories this season where they had the better of Vidyartha College Kandy 66 nil on their home grounds at Mount Lavinia.

In addition the Thomians also recorded impressive victories against St. Anthony's College, St. Peter's College, Dharmaraja College and Isipatana College respectively. The two teams started playing rugby since 1955 and the Lady Jayatilleke Shield was introduced by the late Lucien Jayatilleke an old Joe in 1966 in memory of his mother Lady Evelyn Jayatilleke.

St. Joseph's College were the first holders of this prestigious Shield by virtue of their victory in 1966 under Rohan Jayatilleke (son of Lucien Jayatilleke). The last Josephian victory was recorded way back in 1999 under Laksitha Gunaratne. S. Thomas' College won last year's encounter under Johann Fernando in a thriller at Longden place

St Joseph’s and S. Thomas’ clash for Lady Jayatileke trophy
St. Joseph’s and S. Thomas’ will clash for the Lady Evelyn Jayatileke Shield at Longdon Place today. The Lady Jayatileke Shield was introduced way back in 1966 by her son and Old Joe Lucien Jayatileke in memory of his mother.
Coincidentally the Joes led by Lucien’s son Rohan Jayatileke were the first holders of the Shiled. But since then the Thomians have won the Shield on many occasions.
The last win the Joes achieved was in the year 1999 when the side was led by Lakshitha Gunaratne while Thomians won it last year under Johann Fernando.
The Thomians holders of the shield since 2000 will go all out to retain it for the ninth consecutive year. The two teams will be led by the No 8’s with the Joes by Bhanuka Hegoda and the Thomians by Rohitha Rajapakse
Nevertheless today the game is going to be a close tussle with the Josephians who are leading the Division 1B category with seven wins from seven outings wil be leaving no stone unturned to achieve a win after eight years. The Thomians on the other hand have had fluctuated fortunes this season. They started the season with a bang but fell back at the halfway stage. But the scales are in favour of them.

St. Peter’s confront Isipathana today
NO%20TAG.jpg

By M. Shamil Amit St. Peter’s and Isipathana who both lost their previous games to Royal and S. Thomas’ will confront each other today at Havelock Park with the kick off set for 4.30 p.m. The two teams will definitely be coming in to the game to redeem their lost prestige.
The Petes who after their defeat to Royal have put themselves in a spot of bother and now are in a must win situation if they are hoping to come into contention in quest of retaining the league title for the third year.
Another factor is that this will be their final league game while the Isipathanians who though are not in contention for the league title will be hard nuts to crack and the Petes won’t have it easy with the never say die Pathans.
The Pathans on the other hand have one more game remaining to be played and no doubt this game is going be a block buster with two well balanced teams fighting for prestige.
