It's not about modern look and start buttun thing. It's all about easy to use and lightweight. Start button 1k thibbama patta lesi app 1k hoyaganna. GNOME wala thiyena magulen app hoyanna giyama epa wenava. Anika lightweight. GNOME bara wadi. Mata nm hariyannema na. Xfce a athin patta.

1) I do not know what you say light weight. Many laptops have 8-12GB RAM and at least 1GB VGA. So developers should try to address common users and try to optimize DE for them. Actually KDE uses more resources than Gnome. My point of view is developers should not target their DE to 1GB RAM users. (Linux Server versions have different story.)

2) When the people saw the Office 2007 1st time with the ribbon interface, many told it is hard to use unlike Office 2003. Same story goes for Start button also. It is terrible in touch displays.

Answer 1: Today laptops comes with 1080p desktop. They simply prefer 1080p movies. Think about 15 tab open in chrome. What will be the usage of RAM? Normal users do need resources these days. And Hardware comes for pretty cheap price also. (Contact UrajaK - AKA Bada Mami for prices. )

Answer 2: Simply monitoring tools web based (Nagios, MRTG, Cockpit). Geeks or admins need to access them. (I do libvirt/KVM/QEMU Linux visualization for enterprise system and knows the importance of both CLI and GUI)

Most used IDE is Eclipse. You can use VIM for dealing with couple of files. But you can not use them develop software which you can make money out of it. Remember Code editor can not be used when IDE is required (There is a crossing point when you have to spend more time manage the project than the coding which should be avoided).
