Senanayake may be over limits says expert

There is a strong likelihood that the laboratory tests would prove Sri Lanka’s star spinner Sachitra Senanayake to be a degree or two above the legally permitted 15-degree allowance of straightening the bowling arm, a local expert told the “Daily Mirror”.

He said that all local expert analysts who reviewed footage of the recently concluded ODI series against England with the aid of technical equipment and computer technology that are available came to the same conclusion that several of Senanayake’s deliveries could tip the scales of the legal limit.

“We cannot be one hundred percent certain till we get the lab report from Cardiff. But from our analysis it looks a bit dodgy,” he said adding that spin coach Piyal Wijetunge who accompanied Senanayake for the tests had also expressed similar sentiments.

Sri Lanka selectors yesterday named off spinner Dilruwan Perera in place of opening batsman Upul Tharanga for the 15-member squad to face South Africa in the third ODI to be played at Hambantota and SLC sources said that it was a move taken as a precautionary measure in case Senanayake’s test reports would be received before the match on Saturday. If the report claims the bowler to be over the limits, he faces an immediate ban from international cricket.

The expert added that it was impossible for Senanayake to bowl with a different action in the laboratory to what he used in actual match conditions, as the advanced technological equipment were capable of getting the bowler to mimic identical actions and could easily detect if there is a change.

“Wijetunge said that Senanayake had to bowl quite a number of deliveries and was even asked to repeat the same delivery again and again till they got it exactly right,” he said.

The lab was in possession of actual footage from the fourth ODI at Lord’s where Senanayake had been reported for a suspect action by match officials and had synchronised Senanayake’s action videoed in the lab with those actual match footage to analyse if there was any difference in his action in the lab.

“If they find any disparity, they would just call the test null and void and can call him for a repeat set of tests,” added the expert.
He said that, if the lab finds Senanayake to be over the legal limits, then the spinner faces an immediate ban from bowling in international cricket and will have to remodel his action with Sri Lanka Cricket coaches before facing another series of tests at the lab.

If the lab finds his action to be legitimate after the remodelling, then he will be allowed to play international cricket. However if he gets reported again, and found to be over the legal limit, he will be banned for life for cheating as the lab had technology to synchronise actual match footage with the bowler’s lab footage in the database and also in previous match situations.

According to the Laws of Cricket, bowlers are not allowed to extend their arm during the bowling action as only the rotation of the shoulder is allowed to be used to deliver the ball. However, as no extension is almost impossible, bowlers are allowed a grace of straightening their arm a few degrees in their delivery action. Current ICC regulations specify that the bowler would be allowed to straighten the arm to a maximum angle of 15 degrees at the elbow during delivery. The amount of straightening is calculated between the point at which the bowling arm passes above shoulder height and the point at which the ball is released. The 15 degree grace has been permitted to allow the natural flexing of the elbow joint during a legal delivery.
