Why do people (in SL mainly) fall for the higher video RAM = better gaming TRAP?

Its mainly because normal people can't find any comparable feature in VGAs other than RAM.
Coz there are hell lot of GPUs and normal ppl don't know which one is faster and which one is better they only can see the RAM amount which most manufacturers showing really big on the box. Most of the manufacturers not even mentioning what chip inside they just add that chip name to the model number. Never say this is powered by this chip which is not unique to that manufacturer. All trying to show like whole thing is kinda their product and nothing similar or comparable. So people find only the RAM as understandable and comparable factor.
When it comes processors intel and AMD has nice steady processor lineup and shows how speed increases etc.. and all manufactures say this machine is powered by Intel's or AMD's this chip and it has this much of speed and cache. So most of the people know that you can compare the products which has the same chip. So people know about CPU but not about GPU
Another thing most of the game manufacturers, software developers all mention system requirements in VGA RAM too. If you check their detail system requirements then only you can see the supporting cards.
I think its hard to say use a GPU better than this speed like with CPUs. coz there are tons of GPUs and they don't mention some standard comparable factor for the normal person to understand.
Other thing most of the SL ppl want just to run the game. Not much care about the resolution, enabled features or graphic levels. Most of the people don't know they are playing games on 800X600 resolution while their normal desktop resolution is like 1280X1024 they complain only when the FPS get very low. Other than that if they can play the game thats all about it.

Yes, and that minimum requirements are so underatred. Most of the times, you can't run the games at those setting even at lowest setting with 25+ fps. They should come up with a rating like that is used in Vista WinSAT score (that score is so wrong too, but something like that would do). And they need to show the rating on the outside of the box, and each game should have 3 or 4 graphic levels and show for 30fps at each of these graphic levels and few resolutions, you need to have a card that has a minimum of THIS SCORE. it may be cos of most of people don't care about GPU such as programmers, office workers (Graphic Designers, Type Setters
)so, there's no chance to da people who are interested in GPUs because even sellers don't know about them cos nobody requires much information about GPUs.
even those sellers don't know CPU models (in unity plaza also)
they only tell da Closk Speeds (2GHz, 2.5GHz)
so, which talks about GPUs??
