    i use dialog HSPA in my home download speed is like 120-150 kbps in windows but when it comes to linux its barely 90kbps..
    and in ,y office it goes up to like 250kbps so OS , your current locations all bare good part in your current speed.
    and i am satisfied with my connection speed

    check your your *nix config for 3g again. Its probably using only GPRS.
    I'm using 3g on linux and get full 1mbps speed on it.
