ඇමෙරිකානු විශ්ව විද්‍යාලවල උපාධිය සඳහා අ

මම ශ්‍රී ලංකා විවෘත විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයෙන් විද්‍යාවේදී උපාධිය (B.Sc.) හැදෑරූ අයෙක්. දෙවන ඉහළ පෙළ සාමාර්ථයක් (second upper) මට ලබා ගන්න පුළුවන් වුණා. GPA 3.44 අගයක් මට තියෙනවා. සාමාන්‍ය උපාධියක් (General degree) මට තිබෙන්නේ. Credits 108 ක් උපාධිය සඳහා හදාරා ඇත. මේ වසරේ මම පේරාදෙණිය විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ M.Sc. in Physics of Materials පාඨමාලාවට අයදුම් කරලා තියෙන්නේ. M.Sc. එක කිරීමෙන් පසු Ph.D. එක කිරීමටයි බලාපොරොත්තු වන්නේ.

ඇමෙරිකාවේ විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයක තමා ආචාර්ය උපාධිය කරන්න මම කැමැත්තෙන් ඉන්නෙ. ඉතින් මට විසඳා ගැනීමට තිබෙන ප්‍රශ්න කිහිපය තමා පහත දක්වලා තියෙන්නේ. ඇමෙරිකානු විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයක අධ්‍යාපනය ලැබූ හෝ දැනට ලබන හෝ කෙනෙක් හෝ මේ ගැන විස්තර දන්නා කෙනෙක් ඉන්නවා නම් උදව් කරන මෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිනවා.

A four year degree is typically expected, but if you have a MSc with a three year degree that will be more than enough.

For most physics programs you don't have to apply for teaching assistant (TA) positions separately (but some universities require this). So, yes if you have good enough GRE, TOEFL etc you should be able to get a TA or RA position.

A typical TA stipend (specially for physics programs) is sufficient to support your all expences. This includes housing, living expences, everything. But if you get married and accompany your spouse to the US you might have to prove you have additional funds to support him/her. But the truth is the TA stipend can be actually sufficient for even two people to survive.

A physics graduate student does not have time to do a part time job. They know this. Your stipend should be sufficient to pay all expenses. Actually I pay my and my wife's expenses, and then save some six to seven hundred dollars each month!

If you get a TA they won't expect you to pay anything at the beginning, at least I have not heard that happen to any of my friends.

In many cases you will have to submit transcripts for all the degrees you earned, three recommendation letters from three persons (preferably from lecturers, professors etc), and a personal statement together with your application. Application fees are normally $0 to $100. You will not have to prove you have money if you get a TA position that can fully support your expenses. But if your wife/husbant also go with you in that case you mig have to show some additional funds. This happened to me.

There is a facebook group called "SLGSNA" (Sri Lankan Graduate Students in North America. Join the group and you'll find lot more people to get info from.

එහෙම එකක් නම් දන්නේ නෑ. හැබැයි සමහර uni admission fee කියල එකක් ගන්නවා එක නම් $250-$300ක් වගේ. ඒ වගේම apply කරද්දී application fee කියල එකක් ගන්නවා $50-$100 range එකේ ඒක නම්. ඒක හින්ද uni 5ක් විතර shortlist කරන් ඒවාට apply කරන්න. shortlist කරද්දී top rank 2ක්, middle rank 3ක්, low rank 1ක් වගේ තමයි සාමාන්‍යයෙන් ගන්නේ. එතකොට මොකක් හරි select වෙයි නේ කියල හැබැයි apply කරන්න කලින් prof කෙනෙක්ට කතා කරලා කැමති වෙලා තිබ්බොත් ඔය ප්‍රශ්න මුකුත් නෑ.

5. විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයට ඇතුළත් වීමට ලියකියවිලි ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමේදී අධ්‍යාපන සහතික හැර ඉදිරිපත් කළ යුතු අනෙක් දේවල් මොනවාද? කොපමණ මුදලක් තමා සතුව ඇති දැයි පෙන්විය යුතුද?

Full schol සෙට් වුනොත් කිසිම financial document එකක් ඕනේ නෑ. Transcript තමයි ඕනේ. තව passport, exam scores, හොඳට ලිව්ව CV එකක්, Statement of Purpose වගේ ටික තියෙන්න ඕනේ apply කරද්දි. Profලව contact කරන්න කලින්ම CV, Statement of Purpose එහෙම හදාගෙන හිටියොත් සෑහෙන හොඳයි.

machan go to sl2college.com and ask these questions there. that site is a sri lankan site dedicated to higher education abroad and there are PhD students from around the world in that community.

although i'm not yet a PhD student, i also had some interest on doing a phd and did a lot of reading on that sometime back. i also have many batch-mates doing phd's (not in physics) in USA. so here are the answers according to my knowledge.

1. If you do an MSc here before applying, then it doesn't matter whether your BSc is 3-year or 4-year special degree. But note that, when doing the PhD there, you'll still have to complete some MSc subjects and get their MSc before submitting the PhD thesis. The reason is, anyone who doesn't have a north-american MSc has to complete those subjects when doing the phd. It's not a big deal though - just some extra work.

2. Yes GRE and TOEFL matters. But even if you don't score well, you can get in if you have good recommendations from your Bsc/MSc supervisors. In north american system, recommendations and research experience have a bigger weight. If you have these, then even with low GRE/GPA youll be able to get in and get some funding.

When it comes to funding, there are many types and there are generally no 'scholarships' like in europe and aus.

1. Research assistanceship (RA)
2. Teaching assistanceship (TA)
3. Graduate assistant or something like that - this requires your to work inside the campus
4. Fellowships - like a scholarship and very hard to get

When you get an assistanceship, course fees are waived and you don't have to pay anything. You will also receive a stipend to cover your expenses like $1200 to $2500 depending on uni and assistanceship type/lab. This is said to be enough for a single person to live and also it's possible for a couple to live with it if they have a economical life.

Most people prefer RA's over TA's. Since in an RA, you will be just conducting research related to your area and do not have to involve in teaching and paper marking that is required for TA. But the bottom line is, if you receive one of these, you will not have to pay anything on your own. These will cover all your fees + expenses.

3. Yes, you don't have to do anything as explained above. But if you have family and kids, then i don't know whether above funding is enough.

4. When you get admission to a phd, then try for RA or TA by contacting some professors in research labs of your interest in that uni. Then you don't have to pay anything. Sometimes when they give admission, it comes with RA/TA as well so you don't have to apply separately.

Some people, even if they don't get any funding, go there and pay the first year fees on their own, and during the first year they find RA or TA. But you'll need some 20-30 lakhs for this.

5. I don't know.

Some more tips:

In north american system, sometimes the decision is up to the individual professors and they can influence the admission and also directly decide funding process. So some students contact profs in advance before applying and try to introduce themselves to profs so that chances become high. This is called 'prof letting' and you can find many online resources on this on how to do it successfully.

Note that USA/Canada system is different from Aus/Europe, so specifically read on USA phd's.
