It’s not entirely accurate to claim that this government took over immediately after the country went bankrupt. The credit for stabilizing the situation and steering the country back on track largely goes to Ranil.

Sorry, my misake, it was indeed that CBK caused a negative growth mostly due to LTTE attack in BIA. Ranil was the PM during CBK time, and he unilaterally was prepared to give ISGA to prabhakaran without even the presidential approval. Ranil was regarding as a traitor by the public at that time. Jeppo then did the right thing by backing out of the govt and helping MR get elected. Rest is history.
Also Ranil is the main reason for the country's bankruptancy. It was his yahapalana govt that raised the most number of short turm high interest ISB's for which the Gota govt later defaulted. Now for some he appears to be the saviour, after casting the country in to the fire in the first place
