it solely depends on your speed.
when your are driving at a very excessive speed you should maintain your distance accordingly..
In a event of sudden stop of the front vehicle. Its all about your reaction time and vehicle weight and Breaking ability of the vehicle to complete stop. If your vehicle is not equipped with ABS, then the distance will be much more than you think.

Service manual of my car states it should stop within 3 seconds when braked while travelling at 50 km/h.
