Make it up to someone

Make it up to someone = try to compensate for doing something wrong.

Your girlfriend promises you to wear a skirt when she comes to meet you
next time. But at the due day, you find her in a trouser again. Now you are
worrying and getting annoyed about it. So girlfriend feels guilty and wants
to do something to make you happy. So she says you,
"I'm sorry. What can I do to make it up to you?"

Then you might say, 'a blowjob would be fine'. :P
-true story- ;)

Other ex.
"He tried to make it up to her, but she wouldn't speak to him."
"I’m sorry I was late. I’ll pay for dinner to make it up to you."

I'd check those clips at a free time. Site looks interesting.

Listening to native speakers will help you to speak real English.
Did you know that it's Randy Pausch's last lecture?

Dont post things like these in a language thread dude. Somebody might say that to his GF:P
When they break up, you would be responsible.

This is English dude, not local language. All have to put up with these kinda words and act like grown ups when speaking English. It's also a part of English language. Don't be negative. I don't want this to be boring as we found English from classes.
I'll take responsibility for sure. Because I know if they know to speak English well, they also know how to deal with words. :P

supiri uparimaii
wow, nice compliment  Ta! Feel free to share your knowledge with us too.

    Ran into someone

Ran into someone = encounter someone by chance ; meet someone unexpectedly

Earlier in the day, you saw an old friend on the road who you used
to hang out with but haven't seen for several years and were surprised. You
want to tell your sister about it and say,
"I ran into a friend I haven't seen in years."
    meet_mum_friends_two_women_home.jpg

    Other ex:
"I ran into my cousin yesterday at the market."
"Do you know who I ran into today?"

    Additional note
'Ran into' could stand for several other meanings too. For example,
it can also mean 'to crash into or collide with'.
"The car ran into a tree."

Good morning guys. I thought of posting some that might be useful today. I believe reading can improve your English dramatically. So I thought of sharing an excerpt from one of my favourite novels, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

(To tell you the truth, this is what got me to read English novels. Really good stuff. Short chapters. Simple English. A real page turner.)

    DanBrown_TheDaVinciCode.jpg

    Prologue

    Louvre Museum, Paris
    10:46 P.M.

Renowned curator Jacques Saunière staggered through the vaulted archway of the museum’s Grand Gallery. He lunged for the nearest painting he could see, a Caravaggio. Grabbing the gilded frame, the seventy-six-year-old man heaved the masterpiece towards himself until it tore from the wall and Saunière collapsed backward in a heap beneath the canvas.

As he had anticipated, a thundering iron gate fell nearby, barricading the entrance to the suite. The parquet floor shook. Far off, an alarm began to ring.
The curator lay a moment, gasping for breath, taking stock. I am still alive. He crawled out from under the canvas and scanned the cavernous space for someplace to hide.

    Vocabulary

    Renowned - famous
curator - head of a museum
    staggered - walked/ran unsteadily
vaulted archway - curved structure forming a passage or an entrance
lunged - make sudden movement (in this case, exerting his maximum to get to a safe place)
    gilded - with a gold lining/decoration
heaved - move/lift with great effort
    anticipated - expected
    barricading - blocking
parquet - floor made up of wooden tiles
gasping - inhale huge amounts suddenly
    cavernous - vast space/ area

    Reading tips
    • Most of the time we can understand the meaning meaning of a word from the other words used in the same sentence. (contextual meaning)
      For example
He lunged for the nearest painting he could see

Eventhough we do not know the meaning of lunge, we can guess that it is something to do with running or reaching.

    • Never refer the dictionary for a word unless you cannot guess the meaning. You won't be able to enjoy reading. (But it might be a good idea to write those words down for you to refer later)

I hope this was something useful to you. If you have any questions, please leave a comment or send me a private message. If I have made a mistake somewhere, please correct me.
