Would you like to add a favicon to you Blogger/Blogspot blog?

A favicon (also known as a bookmark icon, website icon, or shortcut icon) is the small image (16x16 pixels) that appears in the address bar when visiting a site.

For Blogger sites, this icon will also help you stand out when your blog is added to other sites' blogrolls or users' "Favorites". Additionally, it lends an element of professionalism and branding to your Blogger/Blogspot blog.

Even if you have few computer skills, you can add a favicon to Blogger. Here's how:

Image before becoming a favicon
CREATE A FAVICON: There are a number of free online tools to help you generate a favicon (see Resources below for link). For functionality, speed and quality of favicon, HTML Kit's is one of the best.

Simply upload a picture, logo, or other graphic to the site, and it will instantly generate a 16x16 favicon for you to download. On this site, they also provide an optional animated version. Download and save the favicon to your Desktop or elsewhere on your computer.

As an example, here's a picture of an strawberry. The favicon generated by the site appears in the next step.

HOST FAVICON ONLINE: Upload favicon to an external web host, such as your Picasa album (which is automatically created for you when you upload pictures to your Blogspot).

To host favicon through Google/Picasa, go to your Picasa album (see Resources for link) and log in using your Blogger username and password. Click on the Upload button, choose your blog's album and upload per screen directions.

OBTAIN THE FAVICON URL: If you've uploaded your favicon to an external web host, copy and paste the URL for the image.

If you've uploaded your favicon to Picasa, then click on the uploaded image. Click on "Link to this photo" (currently on the right side of the screen). Under "Embed Image", check "Image Only (no link"). Copy the embedded image URL. This is the location (URL) of your favicon.

ADD FAVICON TO BLOGGER: Visit your Blogger dashboard or Blogspot account. Click on "Layout", then "Edit HTML". You should now be presented with a screen allowing you to edit the HTML of your blog template.

Within the HTML, near the top, you should see:
[title][data:blog.pageTitle/][/title]

Immediately beneath that line of code, paste the following:

Replace the asterisk (*) with the following:
link href='*' rel='shortcut icon' type='image/x-icon'/

Replace this asterisk (*) with the URL for your favicon image.

SAVE YOUR TEMPLATE & TEST: Save your Blogger template, then click on "View Blog". If the favicon does not appear in your address bar, then try refreshing your browser. If you still do not see it, clear your browser's cache file and restart the browser. Renavigate to your blog.
