Is this the only book you have read mate? You are going around everywhere posting this. I read this back when Malinda Alahakoon and Ali Abdaal was recommending this. Just beacause something is written in a book, it doesn’t become a golden rule. You can find the same idea, and oppossite ideas in dozen other books. And don’t get those self help books very seriously. I have more than 20 of them in my kindle and after a while you understand that self help authors are also just people like us trying to make some money. Its a massive industry.Another passion hypothesis argument. Bro, that's called the Passion Hypothesis. Read this book. you'll understand why simply having a passion for your career doesn't work anymore. It includes a lot of case studies showing that passion isn't what helps you succeed in a field. That idea is a myth. Total bullshit.

Trust me, I know enough about Cal Newport. He's a computer science professor at Georgetown University, so he's a full time academic. He's clearly not in it for the money. If money were his priority, he could make far more doing something else instead of spending decades conducting research just to write books, all while raising two kids.

One question for you. Imagine there's a kid who's always been fascinated by structures like the Burj Khalifa and the Shanghai Tower etc... People in tech industry who came for money are struggling. They were not real engineers anyway. They saw that SEs make a lot of money and decided to do a IT/CS degree. They have no passion to learn new things. So naturally when the market becomes competitive, they will struggle. For those who are smart and know what are doing, IT salaries are still way higher than ither fields. But if you came for money and have no passion, you “might” get a job with 300k starting salary. But you will struggle to keep up.
Let me say one thing. If you have this doubt, that means you dont have a passion for tech. Go do something else. When I was at this stage, I had no doubt. Pay me or don’t, I was going to be an SE. Of course the money factor was there. But some days I was coding until 2 am and then waking up to go to school at 5:30. Thats when I was 13. I had no internet. So I was copy writing code snippets from the school library and running home to try them out in my old pc. Thats passion. Its obvious coding was not a leisure time activity for me. It was my thing.
Earlier you could get a job in IT, be good at it and make a living. You didn’t have to love it. But sadly not anymore. With the competition, if you don’t keep up, it will be depressing for you. You have to constantly learn and keep up with your colleagues. For someone with no passion for tech, it’ll be hard. Thats where the passion logic comes in. To constantly learn something, read about something, you have to be passionate about it. If you have it you will survive in IT. If you survive, you will make money. Obviously more than other fields.
