I usually do something to distract my mind from the subject: paint; exercise; talk with someone who doesn't know anything about my problem or things related to that-so I can talk about something unrelated to what hurts me; go for a walk/shopping; get a new hair cut; start cleaning and tidying up my room.
If it stays longer, I do something that improves my self esteem-like giving alms to an orphanage; donating blood.
