Square Enix Outlines New Development Approach

Square Enix released the contents of a briefing held two weeks ago, and amid some internal turmoil, it appears as though the company is changing the way it approaches big-budget development. The shake-up isn't exactly a surprise; new Square Enix president Yosuke Matsude promised to re-evaluate how the company does business and make changes as necessary. This briefing outlines three moves that Matsuda hopes will reinvigorate Square Enix's gaming business.

The first is to reconsider its approach to long-term, large scale development, since it requires so much time to get games out the door. The slow development also makes it difficult for teams to give information to fans. "We're no longer in an age where customers are left in the dark until a product is completed," says Matsuda. "We need to shift to a business model where we frequently interact with our customers for our products that are in development." As illustrated by many gamers' frustration with Final Fantasy Versus XIII, a little communication would be nice.

The other two points of the plan include increasing focus on smart devices as gaming platforms, and tailoring each region's game portfolio to appeal specifically to that audience (rather than try to push one game in all territories).

Square Enix has been around for decades (at least as it former pieces, Square and Enix), so it's sad to see the company struggle. A publisher that mainly produces a new Final Fantasy every couple years just can't cut it in today's landscape, so hopefully these initiatives can get the company back on the right track without sacrificing what made it popular in the first place.

Devil May Cry dev Ninja Theory's next game is Fightback

Ninja Theory, the UK studio responsible for the recent Devil May Cry reboot, Enslaved and Heavenly Sword, is trying its hand at mobile games with Fightback.
Fightback will be published on the App Store and Google Play by EA-owned mobile specialist Chillingo.Fightback, out this summer, is described as a free-to-play action game with an '80s action movie vibe. There's a touch-based combat system, too. A screenshot is below.

Ninja Theory product manager Dominic Matthews said: "Mobile and tablet gaming is a phenomenon that we just couldn't ignore as a studio and we're very proud to be working with one of the industry's heavy-weights on bringing Fightback to market."Ninja Theory has always strived for the highest production values and that absolutely remains the case in this exciting new space."

EA makes SimCity Amusement Park expansion official

EA has announced the SimCity Amusement Park expansion that leaked earlier this month. It's out on 28th May on Origin. EA is yet to announce the price.

The Amusement Park is a tourist attraction similar to casinos and landmarks, gameplay scripter Jason Halvorson explained. "Running a successful Amusement Park is almost a mini-game in itself."

Your city will earn money from the Amusement Park by having guests go on rides and buying goods from concession stands, as you'd expect. But unlike landmarks and casinos, you need to get your park guests to rides and stands in the most efficient way possible. "It means you're really going to need to pay attention to the layout of your park in order to maximise profits," Halvorson said. You need to place one of three main gates for your park to get going. Each comes with one ride, one concession stand and a stub of road.

There are a number of modules. Signs attract more tourists to your park as well to your entire city. Main attractions are the rides, which include roller coasters, Ferris wheels and go-karts. Secondary attractions are cheaper than main attractions, have a lower maintenance cost but don't satisfy as many riders and don't add as much attraction. They include the drop tower and carousel. Concession stands are the cheapest attractions and have a small capacity, but churn through guests quickly.Of most interest is the mini train station, which lets you customise the rail like a road. The rail can go through tunnels and over bridges. You can connect two train stations together to form a transport system for guests.

The modules become available as you increase your daily profit and upgrade your park to higher levels.
