Yeah, it’s true. Layoffs started in November 400–500 people were already affected . Right after the New Year 2026 first working day, they announced another round, and it’s still ongoing.

They’re targeting ~700 people total, mainly from IFS-acquired products, hitting engineering managers hard. I personally know people who joined with high salaries, worked 2–3 months, and got laid off.

Most affected are on probation, getting just Jan–Feb salaries.Heard thatThere are also plans to remove Unified Support from Sri Lanka and outsource it.This is bad and will seriously hurt the Sri Lankan IT industry. Really feel sorry for everyone affected.

Starting from the last quarter of 2025, it was rumored that there were plans to lay off approximately 1,200 employees. I previously mentioned this news in another thread machan. It now seems this is actually going to happen. By the first quarter of this year, we will see how many have left; hopefully, there will be no further layoffs after that.

This is not strictly due to AI replacement; it is also about cost-cutting and high government taxes. The government has not been business-friendly since the 2022 crisis. Because of the situation in the country, IFS has engaged more with India; as I recall, in 2023, IFS invested in India and partnered with Tech Mahindra.

The current government does not seem to be supporting the IT industry or trying to attract foreign investors (unlike India, which recently secured deals with Amazon and Microsoft again). We cannot expect much from Dr. Hans or Mr. Eranga Weeraratne (Deputy Minister and CEO of Omobio), as they seem to have their own personal agendas.

It's mainly due to AI related cost cutting.. Below are some comments from the Reddit

They’re laying off in bulk due to roles getting replaced by AI according to the insider info I got
    👇
Probably planning to sell the company with a higher profit and low cost

    Restructuring
    👇
aka AI based profit increase before the 1st quarter shareholder meeting
    👇
DEFINITELY.that’s what i was told today in the final meeting

Then why the hell would they be partnering Tech Mahendra??

Tech Mahendra contingent workers are directly working on R&D repos

So this ain't for the AI shit for real. But they want us to think that's the case

This is really normal. When Sri Lanka was extremely poor & salaries were really low, all the companies wanted to have a dev center in Sri Lanka. Because its cheap. When we pay €8000(without social welfare + pension schemes) per software engineer here, in SL back in those days it was just around €1600 (total). But now Sri Lanka is not in the poor low income category. These companies has no reason to keep dev centers here. Now they are looking for cheap alternatives like Africa or more affordable south east asian countries. This is how the world economy & multi national open economy based companies work.
