Never travelled in India but within India it's domestic. In most countries you do not go through immigration because you do not cross an international border. But there are a few exceptions. eg Sabah & Sarawak. If I remember right these places had immigration even flying from KL.

not necessary from Chennai to Delhi, you must exit the international terminal in Chennai and walk about 200 metres before entering the domestic terminal and passing the domestic security check there ( I went there in last year and at that time they were renovating the airport I think that's why I had to walk).

මට කෙලින්ම දිල්ල වලින් ඉක්නනටම එලියට යන්න පුළුවන් නේද ?

Yes, if you need duty free shopping you have to do it in Chennai airport.

We booked into a very good hotel (one that was recommended) and on arrival the reception desk advised that all SriLankans need to be registered and a form to be obtained from the nearest police station. Although the room was allocated they couldn't let us check in. But they said off the record, my wife could settle in but for me to get to the police station and get the authority. They called a taxi, gave instructions to the driver and told me not to wait in queues but go ahead and just give Rs 5 to the police guy, everything will be looked after.
I went in to the police , only one guy was in , no uniform, chewing betel and I gave him Rs 10 and told him why I was there. He gave me his chair to sit down, and started filling the form while he was standing. He was the Inspector of the station. Less than 5 minutes, everything filled and stamped.

No everything has changed , chennai one of the tech city in india , they have nice metro system , lots of mass vehical manufacturering firms, we better spit ourself now .
