The reason is all my friends in IT are getting higher salaries while I'm stuck with a academia. I feel so down when I think about my financial situation.

If you're happy with what you achieve, then stick to what you truly want to do, and the money will follow.

Elakiri is the last place on Earth to get advice on PhD.

Since you have publications there is a good chance for a foreign Phd scholarship. You need very good references from professors, not just I know him type. PhD is not like doing a master, you need to be highly motivated.

Once you complete it, you can be a lecture at a university or a research scientist in a private sector (not in Sri Lanka). Talk to your professors and seniors who are already doing PhDs for advice.

Thanks for the advice bro. I asked this in EK, because I have no one else to ask. I've heard that in academia abroad, it's impossible to make $100,000. Is that true?

I am currently in the final stage on my PhD. Since you want to earn more, I have some advice for you.

    1. Industry is paying well compared to academia.
    2. Some fields do not appreciate having a PhDs but value experience more. As an example, my field is Computer Science. I am trying to get a job in the industry and getting many rejections because I don't have industry experience. Especially with age, they are looking for more experience. Unfortunally for the past 7 years I have been doing my masters (2) then PhD (5). They don't care about academic researchers because we lack industry experience. However, based on your research project and supervisor you may get chances to work with industry and then it's an advantage to move to industry after your PhD. But it depends on your project and supervisor connections.
    3. But if you want to move out. PhD is your best way.
    4. 3 publications are more than enough to get into a PhD.

If I were you, I would try to get into the industry as soon as possible. Once you have enough experience then you can move out as well. But at the same time, I will apply to PhDs. Just grab whatever opportunity comes your way.

I have seen in my field (physics/chemistry) a PhD opens up more opportunities.

    1. Some positions require a PhD
    2. Salary restrictions not having a PhD
    3. Less experience with PhD required vs more experience with a MSc.
